MCLS 'soft' launches new website

Good afternoon everyone, After much hard work, MCLS is very pleased to announce the 'soft' launch of our newly redesigned website. For the next two weeks, you can check out the new MCLS website from the link provided on the current website, www.mcls.org. You'll see many improvements! Please keep in mind that it's still a work in progress - you'll see a little construction dust. New features We are excited to offer many new and improved features on the new MCLS website: Redesigned homepage - the homepage has been redesigned to be more intuitive with streamlined navigation and a much improved site search, so you can quickly find the information you need. In addition, with the targeted news feeds on the homepage, you can more easily stay on top of the latest news, special offers, and training classes from MCLS. Product Search - find eResources and products much more easily through searching by product type, library type and/or keyword. Upcoming Training & Events - the Training & Events list is now more intuitive, scannable and easier to use. Logging in to the MCLS website With two websites live at the same time, the old login page will be shared between the two websites. If you login from the new site, you will be taken to the old site login to place your order/renew your subscription/etc. Melba Moose You might notice the absence of Melba Moose from our new site - Melba decided it was time for retirement. She's now spending her days basking in the sunshine at Potter Park Zoo, just a few miles down the street from the MCLS offices in Lansing. (Her retirement name is 'Willow'). Please wish her well in retirement, and stop by Potter Park Zoo to say hello! New eMagazine Service: Magzter/WT Cox

All, Another new eMagazine option is now available for libraries, in the form of Magzter. Serials jobber WT Cox has formed a partnership to offer Magzter, which has sold eMagazines to the consumer market for several years, to libraries. As the promoter and distributor of the statewide WT Cox print subscription offer to Michigan library cooperative member libraries, TLN also hopes to be able to take the lead with the WT Cox/Magzter partnership, too. We have met with Shannon Caison, Director of Inside Sales for WT Cox, and also with Dana A. Reeves, Regional Director of Sales for WT Cox, and as a result we hope to be able to broker either a statewide or library cooperative wide discount schedule with WT Cox for Michigan libraries with Magzter. Exciting widget from MeL

Greetings, The discovery service of the new MeL is now ready for placement on your library website. You can both view and use the widget as well as get the code here: http://mel.org/widget/meldiscoverywidget.html It does not require end users in Michigan to enter their driver's license/state ID or participating library card number to view results as it is based on geo-ip authentication. It will work inside your library as well as at your patron's homes or offices. If someone uses this widget outside of Michigan they will be prompted to demonstrate residency with driver's license/state ID or participating library card number. This widget harnesses the resources of MeL databases as well as MeLCat. Results from the discovery service widget are full text database content, vetted websites from the MeL gateways, and/or direct you to a MeLCat resource. It is regularly updated with new information from all sources. It functions the same way the search box on the MeL homepage does and we welcome you to test drive it today. Two questions...

Hello Library Community - I have two questions to pose to anyone interested in providing some advice / assistance: (1) Is there a source for free braille material that would be appropriate for a 1st grader? One of our local teachers is looking for Easy materials that are written in braille with words accompanying the braille text. I have given her paperwork and information for LBPH at St. Clair County Library System, but would love any further help in this matter. (2) The tech director at one of our local schools is facing a problem with a local automation system. He asked me if I would pose a question to this group concerning the use of an open source library system (ie. Evergreen) to run a very small school library. Of course, the school system has next to no money to spend on technology and the old system has crashed with (probably) no back up. Any information on whether open source is a viable 'fix' would be greatly appreciated. As always, thank you in advance for any and all advice!
