LibraryBiz Connect has been busy- here's an update
by Library BizConnect 12 Feb '15

12 Feb '15

*What is LibraryBiz Connect?* A grassroots organization comprised of public and academic librarians working together with business support non-profit organizations to: - Position public libraries as the local portal for economic development - Connect average businesses to knowledge, data, training and business counseling in an approachable environment - Pool regional resources to benefit our local communities We are not a fee-based organization. We are a group that is committed to supporting economic development and growth for stronger communities by utilizing the tools and resources already available in most communities. *Who are we?* Current partners include: Adrian Public Library Ann Arbor District Library Bizgrid Detroit Brighton Area Chamber of Commerce Brighton District Library Canton Public Library Chelsea Chamber of Commerce Chelsea District Library Cromaine District Library Eastern Michigan University Gast Business Library – Michigan State University Genessee District Library Business Center Hartland Area Chamber of Commerce Howell Area Chamber of Commerce Howell Carnegie District Library Jackson District Library Kresge Business Administration Library, University of Michigan Ross School of Business Library of Michigan/Michigan eLibrary (MeL) Michigan Small Business Development Center (MI-SBDC) MMLC (Mideastern Michigan Library Cooperative) Plymouth District Library Schoolcraft College Business Development Center SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) TLN (The Library Network) Traverse Area District Library Washtenaw Community College – Bailey Library Wayne State University Libraries *How does the partnership work?* At its most fundamental, the partnership is successful because of the relationships we have built with each other. We acknowledge and appreciate the strengths of our partners and help direct current and potential business owners to the best organization to meet their needs. Here is a brief (very simplified) example of how LibraryBiz Connect partnerships benefit a community: - A community member comes to the library looking for information on how to start a business. The librarian directs their community member to the resources and asks if they would like to sign up for the “How to Start a Business” workshop being held at the library. - The community member attends a Small Business Development Center “How to Start a Business” workshop at their local library. - The community member then talks to a SCORE counselor who regularly holds counseling hours at the library. - While working on a business plan the SCORE counselor can direct the community member to a librarian for access to business databases and print resources. - The community member opens a storefront on Main St. *What have we been doing?* - Going to conferences and workshops around the state attended by small business owners and small business support organizations. Talking to non-librarians about the resources available at local libraries and the information professionals available to help find the correct information. - Encouraging business owners to visit their local libraries for access to business resources - Encouraging business support organizations to reach out and develop relationships with their local libraries. Help each other do what we do best, sharing our resources and network of contacts to help support business owners. - Helping each other! Encouraging libraries to partner with each other and local business nonprofits. It’s OK not to own everything and not to know everything. - Providing partner and interested libraries and business support organizations with a monthly conference call. MeL Minute - Chilton's Vehicle Repair
by Borrelli, Eunice (MDE) 12 Feb '15

12 Feb '15

Hi everyone, Between potholes, snow drifts, black ice, and road salt our vehicles have been taking quite a beating over the past few months (and it's not over yet). Some may even need repair or body work or a little maintenance. Maybe we'd like to tackle the job ourselves and need step by step instructions, illustrations, and specifications. Or, we don't feel qualified to handle the tasks ourselves but want to be well-informed when hiring a professional and have an idea of what's involved. Vehicle enthusiasts have long used print versions of Chilton Repair Manuals and fortunately, electronic versions of hundreds of these manuals are available in the MeL<http://mel.org/index.php?P=Home> database Chilton Library<http://galesupport.com/chilton_branding/splashPage.php?loc=lom_accessmich>. Labor estimating, bulletins/recalls, maintenance, and repair are included as are wiring and vacuum diagrams, close-up photographs, and more. Start out by selecting the year, make and model to see what is available for your vehicle. Model years 1940 (select makes) to the present, trucks, SUVs, imports and domestic, are all included. Michigan residents or Michigan library access only. One note, if this resource isn't displaying properly for you in Internet Explorer 11, navigate to Tools | Internet options | Privacy - then click on the Advanced privacy settings and check Override automatic cookie handling and set both first-party and third-party cookies to accept. MeL Minutes are brought to you by the Library of Michigan. Want more information on MeL? Stay tuned for next week's MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, email us at contact(a)mel.org<mailto:contact@mel.org> or visit mel.org<http://mel.org/>. We encourage you to share MeL Minutes with your public service colleagues. Eunice Eunice C. Borrelli Michigan eLibrary Internet Librarian, Library of Michigan/Michigan Dept. of Education 702 W. Re: [Michlib-l] Michlib-l Digest, Vol 4, Issue 11
by Shanni Kerr 12 Feb '15

Re: Series titles on spine labels? We only list the number within the series on the spine label, and on the inside pocket/label we put the series title. We do have a bookmark type piece on cardstock with our more popular series that just stays sticking out between the books. Our patrons love it. Sometimes they "steal" it and we have to replace it, but not very often. Series titles on spine labels?
by Janelle Martin 12 Feb '15

12 Feb '15

Hello Everyone, I had a patron mention that it would be nice if we had the series number on the spine label of the adult/young adult fiction books and I started thinking about it. It sounds like a good idea, however, it seems like it would be a lot of work. I discussed it with my director and she wants to know if other libraries do this. Does any library do this? What is the process? How are your labels set up and what information is on it? An alternative that was discussed was to put a list of the series titles attached to the shelf where the books are shelved (on a shelf talker) but this seems like a lot of information to attach to a shelf, especially for the series with more than 10 books. Does anyone do this? Does anyone have something that works better than these two options? I am more than willing to look up series titles for patrons but I thought this might help the patrons who want to do it themselves. Any information that you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Janelle Janelle Martin Head of Fiction Marguerite deAngeli Library Lapeer District Library jmartin(a)lib.lapeer.org 810-664-6971 ext 3218

Questions about Seed Libraries
by Heidi Neil 12 Feb '15

12 Feb '15

Hello there, I was thinking of starting up a seed library here and was wondering if anyone had advice? Pros/Cons? Best way to get started? I am planning on partnering with a local community group, but also read an article awhile back that seed libraries were getting shut down due to Agri-Terrorism and the Seed Act of 2004? Anywho, any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Heidi Neil Adult Services Librarian Adrian District Library 143 E. Does anyone know of a good Michigan book bindery?
by Roxanne Sander 12 Feb '15

Hello, We are looking for a reputable book bindery to do some work for us. I did a Google search and it retrieved a list. Rather than just choose one from the list to call, I would prefer to contact one with whom someone has had a positive experience. If you can recommend someone, please reply off-list. Thanks.
