The national Friends-support organization, United for Libraries, released this announcement: Friends of Libraries groups have their very own national week of celebration! United for Libraries will coordinate the ninth annual National Friends of Libraries Week Oct. 19-25, 2014. The celebration offers a two-fold opportunity to celebrate Friends. Use the time to creatively promote your group in the community, to raise awareness, and to promote membership. Consultant needed

Hello everyone. My Board has asked me to try to locate a 'consultant' who can take a look at our operational staffing needs from a standpoint of use of volunteers vs paid staff at the circulation desk. We currently use only volunteers to staff our circulation desk, and that is becoming increasingly difficult because not only because of the technical aspects of the service, but with the detailed knowledge required. So I am proposing an additional paid staff person who would be called a Circulation Clerk. The Board wonders if there is such a consultant who could outline the merits/benefits of having a paid staff, not replacing the volunteers, but rather supervising them, while being the primary contact with our patrons at the front desk. Harrison Township Public Library Now Live With MAP!

All, I am pleased to announce that Michigan's newest public library, Harrison Township Public Library, is now live with the Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) program at http://michiganactivitypass.info The addition of HTPL means we now have a total of 750 MAP participating venues, consisting of 638 library buildings and 112 cultural partners. While 750 is a nice, round number, if you've been reading our MAP-related messages you have probably come to the conclusion that MAP is not a program to rest on its laurels. Being as that is the case, we are always glad to preach the gospel of MAP to perspective new cultural partners. And of course if any of you are planning to build a new library, or if your district or municipality is adding a branch, we want to know all about that, too in order that we might welcome the new arrival into the family that is MAP. Sandra Novacek and Border Crossings

Sandy Novacek (formerly Scherba and a Cromaine Library Director) was the feature of a two-part fundraiser for our Friends in May. She was absolutely wonderful! Not only is the book "Border Crossings" a compelling story of a child warrior (even in WWII we had them) the story of how the book came to be is an incredible inspirational journey itself. On top of speaking at a brunch and speaking at an evening Czech fest (complete with Bayanina performing eastern European music on accordion), Sandy also shared an exhibit of Charles Novacek's paintings--just a few of the 400 Sandy has, but an amazingly varied collection chosen for our exhibit space. In addition to all the time Sandy shared with us already, she is coming to our Adult Fiction Book Club which is reading the nonfiction "Border Crossings." (Thank you, Sandy!) Ordering Federal Tax Forms

A while back libraries participating in TFOP received an email from the IRS alerting us that 2014 Form 8635, the one we use to order tax forms for the library, would arrive via email in September. Obviously, we did not receive the form. IRS now "anticipates" that the form will be emailed "within two weeks." So be on the lookout and "anticipate" so that you may participate. Debbie Gallagher
