E-rate training in 7 locations around Michigan

Greetings, I am happy to announce that the Library of Michigan is able to address the need for regional E-rate training this fall with help from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). First, our long-time consultant Linda Schatz will be at the Library of Michigan on November 20th for an all-day session on E-rate and the changes to the program. Time: 8:00 - 4:30. Cost: $30. This session will solely contain library-specific information. The class will cover the changes to the E-rate program and information needed by new and experienced E-rate filers to get ready for this exciting new time in the E-rate program. Participation is limited to staff from Michigan libraries. You can register for it here: http://www.solutionwhere.com/lom/cw/showcourse.asp?61. In addition, the Michigan Department of Education has graciously invited Michigan library staff to attend the regional training that they are providing in six locations during October and November. Individuals well-versed in E-rate will be presenting the training along with a representative from E-rate Central. At each location, there will be a two-hour session on the changes coming to E-rate in the morning from 10:10 to 12:10: "Come learn how the Universal Service Fund (USF) E-rate program is evolving in its Funding Year 2015. This funding year is anticipated to be the first of several years in which there are going to be changes that will dramatically affect the E-rate program. Better known as E-rate 2.0 these changes will transform the program. Anticipate positive and negative impacts to the scope and what services are eligible for funding" And a two-hour session in the afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00: "designed for those who are new to the E-rate process or those who would like to rejuvenate their skills. This training will go over the basics of the form 470 and 471 and also the changes for the 2015 funding year." You are welcome to attend morning, afternoon, or both. Training is free to attendees. We occasionally receive an item that has no matching request in the patron record as well, but I haven't noticed it happen recently. Usually, when I investigate materials coming in that have no hold record, it looks as though the item had already been received and returned by the patron and somehow made its way back to us after it was returned. I've had no complaints from patrons that they've requested an item that dropped off of their account before it arrived. We're a DCB 2 library if that helps. Book is InTransit, gets turned around and sent back to lender, lender checks it in and the request is gone from the Borrowing patron record. Could that be part of the problem? Have the patrons in question updated their emails on their MeL accounts? (MeL issues a default email and patrons need to change them to their personal emails.) If the lending library can not fulfill the request, an email is sent to the patron to let them know that the request will be canceled. If MeL doesn't have the patrons' email, then it could look like what you have described -- the request would "disappear" and the receiving library would have no notice because there was nothing for them to receive. Every time I have had a patron complaint about dropped or missing MeL requests, this has turned out to be the case. I hope this helps. This is a 32 hour per week position, including evenings and weekends, starting at $14.50 per hour. There are no benefits available for the position. Responsibilities of the Position: Under the supervision of the Head of Youth Services, performs paraprofessional work serving library patrons directly or indirectly. Provides information and recommendations that can be used for materials selection in the Youth Services Department. Plans, organizes, and conducts library services and programs in Youth Services. Are any other libraries having trouble with MeLCat requests being dropped from patron accounts? We have been getting more and more complaints from patrons over the past several weeks about their requests disappearing from their MeLCat accounts. It seems to be happening before items are in transit, but we are not receiving any notice that the holds have been cancelled. We are hearing about it so often and it has been happening so much more lately that it is clear that it is not just patron error. Has anyone else been having the same issue?
