Children and Finger Foods at the Library
by Steven Smith 24 Apr '15

24 Apr '15

We've been struggling with the issue of parents bringing in finger foods for their children to eat while at the library. We are a strict "no food" library as the layout of our building makes it impossible for us to set aside an area where food can be eaten. While we sympathize with moms trying to feed their kids, kids are not usually known to be very clean about their eating habits. Sometimes we look the other way, other times not so much. We are wondering how other libraries with "no food" rules handle this situation? Any feedback would be welcome. Steven F. Book Promotion
by Sylvia Merz 24 Apr '15

24 Apr '15

Hello all. Am shamelessly promoting purchase of a Leelanau County authors book, Testimony of the Senses, by Cory Oldweiler. Below is a synopsis. The book is being released on May 18th, but is now available on Amazon and Ingraham; soon on Baker & Taylor. Cory has worked at the Leland Library on and off for the past 10 years in between writing, traveling, and attending opera, his great passion, all over the world. He is an extraordinary and passionate writer. One reviewer writes, This book is not for sissies. The story line is a simple one, a teenage boy looking for his absentee father. However, on his journey he finds more than he bargained for. Told expertly by Oldweiler with his vast knowledge of music, opera and fascinating mythological references. He brings a new twist to storytelling. I cant wait to read it again. "Testimony of the Senses" is the story of Emilio Tramonti, a boy who grows up believing his father died before he was born. On his seventeenth birthday, Emilio learns that his life has been predicated on a lie-his father is actually alive. He leaves home, seeking to understand, and eventually to confront, the man who ran rather than raise his child. There is nothing quotidian in the telling of this tale. Emilio is conducted toward his fate by an omnipresent companion, Gustav Mahler's Seventh Symphony, which premiered on the date of his birth and provides the aural architecture of his life. His mother's idolatrous obsession with Michelangelo's Pietà transforms her from a coddler to just another absent authority figure. A false, former New York Philharmonic violinist teaches Emilio to hear, but ultimately betrays and loses his trust. An annotated, photo-filled copy of Ovid's "Metamorphoses," dating from his father's time as a photographer during World War II, holds the mysteries of his parents' past-and a carefully preserved dead lizard. And in his final movement, increasingly insensate from wandering Lear-like through the storm surrounding and suffusing him, Emilio is forced to face judgment for the choices he has made. "Testimony of the Senses" is both bildungsroman and billet-doux, to literature, language, and music. It challenges the reader to think, to question, to seek out answers. How do we grieve? Why do we hope? What are we willing to believe in blindly, on faith alone? Ultimately it is Emilio's voice that matters most in all these matters, Emilio's voice that carries the story along. Rhythmically, melodically, almost compulsively. Here is a link to the website: http://www.cydaedalusbooks.com/ Sylvia Merz, Director Leland Township Library 203 E. Cedar St., P.O. Expanded MAP Program Launch Is One Month From Today!!! May 24, 2015
by Jim Flury 24 Apr '15

24 Apr '15

All, I am very pleased to share with you a number of details/updates regarding the upcoming launch of hugely expanded MAP, which will take place exactly one month from today, May 24, 2015. First, the new MAP "brochure" for 2015-2016 is ready. Brigette at TLN did a TON of work over the course of the past several months to compile all of the information to produce this booklet. Brigette calls it a "brochure" but she shouldn't be that modest about it. The link to the new MAP booklet is here: http://tln.lib.mi.us/map/Files/MAP%20Brochure.pdf You may print your own copy or copies of the booklet for your staff and patrons if you choose. We will be sending one copy of the booklet to every library, along with two posters (available here http://tln.lib.mi.us/map/) prior to May 24. Brigette will also be updating the online MAP booklet on average once per month or so, as needed, to reflect the addition of new MAP partners. Second, the renewal rate of current MAP partners for next year currently stands at over 85%! And we have another month to go for the remaining 15% to commit to the renewal :) Probably not every one of the remaining 15% will do so, for various reasons, but I am pretty certain that most will. And we are still in recruiting mode for new venues, too. Remember, YOU are our best ambassadors in your communities when it comes both to recruitment of new MAP partner venues, as well as retention of current partners. Third, usage of MAP continues to grow. With exactly one month remaining in this MAP year, we have already circulated 38% more passes in 11 months of MAP this year, than we did in 12 months of MAP last year. Nice work, everybody! Fourth, in advance of as well as thereafter launch, there will be a series of MAP kick-off events held at libraries and museums around the state. Details regarding those to follow soon. Fifth, also in the promotion and publicity department, the new press release for MAP is nearly ready. We will share it with everyone as soon as it is finished. And thanks to Sharon at St. Clair County Library, I will be doing a live interview about the MAP program on radio station WPHM AM 1380 in Port Huron at 7:40 a.m. on Thursday, May 28. Again, be sure to check out Brigette's brand new MAP booklet at http://tln.lib.mi.us/map/Files/MAP%20Brochure.pdf We consider it our signature promotional piece when it comes to informing patrons about MAP. It will look very nice on your library's website, too :) Thank you for your support and promotion of the Michigan Activity Pass program. Reporting Suspected Abuse or Neglect (Was: Homeless children)
by Ray Arnett 24 Apr '15

24 Apr '15

Hi all— Please inform all of your staff and particularly your children’s services staff about the following website from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services: http://www.michigan.gov/dhs/0,4562,7-124-7119---,00.html It gives the toll-free number to report suspected abuse or neglect of any child or adult within the state. In addition, it gives some additional information on how to recognize signs of abuse or neglect for both children and vulnerable adults. I hope this is helpful, Ray Arnett Fremont Area District Library 104 East Main Street Fremont MI 49412 (231) 928-0243 (direct) (231) 924-3480 (231) 924-2355 (fax) rarnett(a)fremontlibrary.net From: michlib-l-bounces(a)mcls.org [mailto:michlib-l-bounces@mcls.org] On Behalf Of Shannon Janeczek Sent: Tuesday, April 14, 2015 10:37 PM To: Lois Hartman Cc: MICHLIB-L Listserv Subject: Re: [Michlib-l] Homeless children I would say calling the local or county children's protection unit might be a good idea. They can come in when the kids are there and approach them. If there's a private meeting room for them to have a talk, that might be the best option to arrange. On Friday, April 10, 2015, Lois Hartman <lrhartman8(a)yahoo.com> wrote: I have a little bit of a touchy situation and am wondering how to proceed. We have had 3 siblings come in on a semi regular basis for the last couple of weeks, and it is pretty obvious that they are living out of the car. They are dirty, smelly, etc. No parents with them ever. They come and sometimes stay as long as we are open. We haven't ever seen them eat something, nor do they look like they are well fed. The oldest is approximately 16 (she drives the car) and the youngest about 9. The youngest has displayed some anger (not in the library but one of my staff saw them outside once and he was very angry). They aren't misbehaving in the library, but we are concerned. My question is, what if anything can we do? Is there somewhere we can call? We have not approached them because they seem very tense and not very approachable. They mostly come in to use our computers. Any suggestions, ideas or advice? Lois Hartman Watervliet District Library
