"Opt-in" newsletter/event reminder emails
by Sarah Scherdt 27 Aug '15

27 Aug '15

Greetings all, The White Lake Township Library is interested in providing a bi-weekly (possibly monthly) event reminder email. Ideally, we would like to have a place on our webpage were patrons could enter their email address and opt-in or subscribe to our event emails. I was hoping to gather some information from other libraries that currently use this kind of email based newsletter. If you could take a few moments to answer a couple of questions regarding your service it would be greatly appreciated. What is the name of the program or software you use? - is it efficient? - is it user-friendly? - Are you happy with it? What were the up-front costs for the program/software? - were there any long term costs to consider? Has your library seen an increase in program attendance with the use of the opt-in email list? - or other indications that the email list is working? Thanks so much for your time, Sarah Scherdt Adult Reference Librarian White Lake Township Library 7527 E. Highland Road White Lake, MI 48383

Program Recommendations (The Storytellers, Alexandria's Nature Bus)
by Charli Osborne 27 Aug '15

27 Aug '15

I'm glad I just saw the post about Wildlife Safari, because it reminded me to post about a couple of wonderful programs we had this summer at Oak Park. Bob and Audrey Allison, aka The Storytellers (http://www.thestorytellers.org/) were here to present a program on being an everyday hero. The program included music and stories, humor and laughter. Bob and Audrey played off each other and completely engaged the kids throughout. Each child was able to play one (or more!) of the unusual instruments they brought and a wonderful time was had by all. Kids and parents alike enjoyed themselves. We were also fortunate enough to win a grant that allowed us to have an absolutely fascinating two-hour program with Alexandria's Nature Bus from Howell's Nature Center (http://www.spiritofalexandria.org/index.php/alexandria-s-nature-bus) The naturalists brought five birds of prey and presented a fabulous and fun program on them as well as had the kids explore the nature bus itself. This webinar will demonstrate how new technologies are enabling libraries to engage and serve users in innovative and expanded ways. Wellington City Libraries (WCL) in New Zealand and the Western Plains Library System (WPLS) in Oklahoma are two libraries that have successfully reached their communities beyond library walls through inventive programs and services. >From beach bicycles re-designed as roving story-time spectaculars to late nights spent in university canteens, WCL staff are taking the best parts of the library to where their potential customers are. Learn more about how WCL is using imagination to reach key potential users in family, tourist, and student communities, and how staff is applying their experiences for new mobile services concepts. In the states, WPLS employs a bookmobile with a mobile hotspot, organizes special library card signup drives at local schools, builds book collections based on user input, and offers links to library materials that tie into school curricula at every grade level. by White, Shannon (MDE) 27 Aug '15

27 Aug '15

Passing along information about the upcoming national association's conference this fall. Even if you are unable to attend an ARSL conference take a look at their website at http://arsl.info/. They also have a listserv devoted to libraries serving small and rural populations as well as other helpful resources for their members. -------------------------------------------------- Conference time is almost here and time is running out to save on early bird registration for ARSL 2015 in Little Rock Arkansas. Members attending conference and registering before August 29th, will receive a $65 discount off of the regular member rate. This means that members will receive a full conference including 3 morning meals and 2 lunches for only $260 (plus a $3.95 processing fee). What a value! In case you are still on the fence about going, the schedule of events can be found online. Additional information can be found on the conference page including information on our guest speakers Daniel Black, Josh Hanagarne, Zach Benedict, and PC Cast. A couple other things to pay close attention to is the pre and post conferences including a writers workshop with PC Cast! Also, if you haven't been to an ARSL conference before, we welcome you to take a short look at our video. Should you have any questions please feel free to email us. We sure hope to see you in Little Rock Oct. 1st-3rd for a great 3 day event of learning and sharing with our peers at ARSL2015. Those ready to register may go straight to the registration portal. But hurry, this deal won't last for much longer. Sincerely, ARSL 2015 Conference Committee --------------------------------------------------- sdw ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shannon D.
