exercise classes @ your library
by Perri Saunders 14 Sep '15

14 Sep '15

Do you offer ongoing exercise opportunities at your library? If yes, what is the payment structure? Do you pay the presenter and offer the classes for free? Is there a charge to the patrons who attend? Do they pay the presenter directly, or pay the library? Do you have waivers for patrons to sign? Could you share? Thanks for any information/advice you can give. Have a fantastic Monday! Perri Saunders, Director White Pigeon Township Library 102 N. Kalamazoo St., P.O. Fw: ALA, Harwood Institute release new tools to help libraries lead positive community change
by Steven K. Bowers 14 Sep '15

14 Sep '15

FYI ________________________________ From: alacro-l-request(a)lists.ala.org <alacro-l-request(a)lists.ala.org> on behalf of Don Wood <dwood(a)ala.org> Sent: Monday, August 31, 2015 11:52 AM To: alacro-l(a)lists.ala.org Subject: [alacro-l] ALA, Harwood Institute release new tools to help libraries lead positive community change ALA, in partnership with The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation, has released three new tools to help libraries engage their communities, focus efforts where they are needed most and lead positive community change. The tools are the final pieces of a set of community engagement resources created for libraries as part of ALA's Libraries Transforming Communities initiative. Taken together, the collection - which includes worksheets, conversation guides and webinars - teaches libraries to "turn outward," making their communities the reference point for the libraries' work. The new tools are designed for libraries that already have been putting the "turning outward" approach to use, or those that have attended a Harwood Institute training or orientation. * "Making It Stick with Staff"<http://www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/sites/ala.org.transforminglibrarie…> is a discussion guide to help libraries reflect on their changing outlook and make the "turning outward" approach part of their everyday work. * "Making Meaning of Data"<http://www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/sites/ala.org.transforminglibrarie…> helps libraries make sense of data about library usage and activity and use that information to create programs that better serves the community's needs. * "Tracking Your Progress<http://www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/sites/ala.org.transforminglibrarie…>" provides a visual representation of the "turning outward" approach to help libraries visualize where they have been and where they are going next. Deborah McCullough, deputy director of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County in Ohio, said the "Making It Stick with Staff" tool helped facilitate teamwork among her staff. "'Making It Stick with Staff' was a great way to get staff to talk - and everyone participated! -about what the library has done to implement change," McCullough said. "The questions were practical and specifically designed to keep the conversation going, and yet allowed for reflection and analysis." Created by The Harwood Institute, the "turning outward" approach emphasizes taking steps to better understand communities; changing processes and thinking to make conversations more community-focused; becoming more proactive to community issues; and putting community aspirations first. Libraries and library professionals around the country are using this approach to: * lead conversations with community members to better understand their goals and concerns; * develop library strategic plans that benefit the library and the greater community; * connect with underserved segments of the library's service area; * overcome political gridlock; and * create professional development opportunities that meet the library system's needs. The full collection of "turning outward" resources - including a 90-day "Step-by-Step Guide to 'Turning Outward' to Your Community"<http://www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/sites/ala.org.transforminglibrarie…> - can be downloaded, free of charge, at ala.org/LTC<http://www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/libraries-transforming-communities…>. The new tools were conceived with insight from the Libraries Transforming Communities Public Innovators Cohort<http://www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/libraries-transforming-communities…>, a group of 10 public libraries selected to take part in an intensive, 18-month training into the "turning outward" approach. _______________ Sarah Ostman Communications Manager Public Programs Office American Library Association 312-280-5061 If you no longer wish to receive information via this e-list, here are the instructions on how to unsubscribe: UNSUBSCRIBE INSTRUCTIONS: * Go to http://lists.ala.org/sympa/info/alacro-l * Log in on this page; first time users will need to get a password by following instructions * Choose Unsubscribe from the left-hand column and follow instructions

Do Unto Otters is arriving everywhere! Laurie Keller began the author tour last week at the Ionia Community Library and Boyce Elementary School and will finish up by the end of the month with three visits to the Upper Peninsula. As you do your fall programming, please send us pictures of your activities and neat craft ideas. We have a Michigan Reads events Flickr account we post to and we need pictures for this year! I've already posted pictures of the great cut out cookies of the book characters the Ionia Community Library made for their event. https://www.flickr.com/photos/michiganreads/ Karren Reish Library Grants Coordinator Library of Michigan 517-241-0021 517-373-5700 f reishk(a)michigan.gov<mailto:reishk@michigan.gov> www.michigan.gov/lsta<http://www.michigan.gov/lsta> www.michigan.gov/youthlibraryservices<http://www.michigan.gov/youthlibraryservices> www.michigan.gov/michiganreads<http://www.michigan.gov/michiganreads> www.michigan.gov/sl21<http://www.michigan.gov/sl21>
