Computer Skills/Workforce Dev. Skills in MeL
by Biggs, Deb Renee (MDE) 15 Sep '15

15 Sep '15

Hi Again-I've had couple of follow-up questions as to what might be available in MeL for computer skills/workforce development skills since the Computer Skills Center will no longer be part of LearningExpress Library in MeL starting October 1, 2015. This is basically what we've got going in these 2 areas; what you will see are freely available websites chosen by our MeL selector(s): So, what we have available is in MeL's Job's Gateway, http://mel.org/jobs and in particular on the "Tutorials" page, http://mel.org/index.php?P=MeLGateways&ParentId=1006 within the Jobs Gateway--minus the Computer Skills Center which you currently see there as we are not yet to 10/1. There are other freely available websites on the "Workforce Development" page, http://mel.org/index.php?P=MeLGateways&ParentId=1011 Also, Pure Michigan Talent Connect, http://mitalent.org has much of what JCA has and it's available to all Michigan residents at no cost. Hi again, Thank you to the few people that responded to my first post. The information I received about Mailchimp.com and Constant Contact has been very helpful. At this point I'll ask if there is anyone else willing to take a few moments to share? What is the name of the program or software you use? - is it efficient? - is it user-friendly? - Are you happy with it? What were the up-front costs for the program/software? - were there any long term costs to consider? Has your library seen an increase in program attendance with the use of the opt-in email list? - or other indications that the email list is working? For those of you that asked me to share the responses I will be sending the information out shortly. Thanks, Sarah Scherdt Adult Reference Librarian White Lake Library

Conservation and Collections Care Camp - Nov. 5
by Driedger, Kevin (MDE) 15 Sep '15

15 Sep '15

Call for Participants & Presenters: The next Conservation and Collections Care Camp is set for November 5, 2015. It will be held in Livonia at the National Headquarters for Document Freeze Drying (DFD) /Document Restoration Services. The agenda will consist of (informal) presentations / discussions with our peers about pressing or puzzling issues, followed by a tour of the facility (3 buildings!) which specializes in recovering documents, electronic files, and artwork that has been damaged in a disaster. The tour will be conducted by Bill Gulley, Archives Specialist. Fittingly, our theme for this camp will be "Preparation." ** Tentative time will be 10:00- 3:00. There is no cost for the camp, but lunch will be on your own. Registration Required. In you have attended a C&C Camp before, you know that it is conducted in an informal environment designed for us share conservation-related accomplishments, ask colleagues about their experiences, and to give & get advice. The focus is primarily, though not exclusively, about analog materials: paper, photographs, film, art, etc. Please plan to attend to share your experiences and questions AND to learn exactly how those wet & moldy documents get brought back to life. Please e-mail Whitney Miller (millerwh(a)msu.edu<mailto:millerwh@msu.edu>) with questions and to register. **Please note that because the camp includes a production facility tour, accessibility is limited. Participants must be able to negotiate stairs. If you have an accessibility issue, please call Whitney Miller for further information. ^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v Kevin Driedger Librarian for Conservation and Digitization Library of Michigan P.O. Program Recommendation
by Arleen Wood 15 Sep '15

15 Sep '15

A few weeks ago Kathleen Marcaccio visited our AuGres branch to talk about Gone with the Wind. We had a good turnout and it was great to see new faces coming to a library program. Several drove some distance to attend, which was great as the district covers two counties. The audience ages were wide ranging and while mostly women there were a few men who attended, also. Kathleen's knowledge of Margaret Mitchell and how the book came to be written, published, and casting the movie were insightful. The memorabilia was interesting and enjoyed by all - it felt like a private museum exhibit. This was a excellent program. I am sure everyone was happy they took time out of their busy schedules to attend. --
