Do you have no makers on staff and are afraid your makerspace won't be credible? Or maybe you have a plan but no money. Find out how the East Lansing Public Library (ELPL) in East Lansing MI opened two makerspaces in the fall of 2014 with about four months lead time and a budget comprised entirely of donations from the community. Kristin Shelley, Director of the East Lansing Public Library and Lauren Douglass, Head of Technology Services at ELPL, will discuss how to engage the community; get the money flowing; mobilize and excite staff; open a space; and keep it full of excited and engaged makers of all ages. I prefer book resources, ideally those published recently enough to include RDA information. However, online resources are acceptable if necessary. trouble patrons?

Hello everyone, We've got some amazing programs running at our library, but we've run into some problems recently. Our patron, K, has been an important participant in many of our programs, and was one of few patrons that have been with us from the start of many of them. K's personality can be loud, and at times aggressive and/or confrontational. K is always wanting to play the 'devil's advocate' in discussions, and can come off as disrespectful to the feelings/ideas of others. It can turn many discussions into fights. We've attempted to increase the number of staff at programs so that we can redirect discussions and keep the programs on topic, but it feels useless. We are losing many prospective members that join us for an event, but then do not return, largely due to being made to feel uncomfortable. We are also uncomfortable inviting speakers to come to the library because of this particular issue. So I am tapping the collective awesome that is michlib-l to see what suggestions you all can share with us. Many thanks! She will be speaking on Money Management Skills, Developing a Spending Plan, Setting Goals and Understanding Credit. Wednesday evening at 6:30 SHARON DURLING will be presenting "BE BROKE BUT HAPPY : HOW TO HAVE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LITTLE BIT OF MONEY YOU DO HAVE, AS WELL AS THE PILES OF MONEY YOU DON'T (but wish you did!!) Sharon Durling is "Broke Girl" and knows a thing or two about money, having opened her first bank account as a child at Thompson Savings Bank in Hudson Michigan and since worked her way to Wall Street. Meanwhile, she has taught financial literacy from the basements of Chicago housing projects to ladies who lunch in Orange County, California. Reorganization of Children/Adult DVD Collections

Dear Colleagues, We are reorganizing our DVD collections and wonder how you manage it. In the past, we collected award winning, R rated and family themed movies in the Adult Collection and cartoons and animation in the Children's Collection. We have recently broadened our Adult Collection by adding more films with adult themes and are looking to remove the "family oriented movies" to the Children's Collection. Do you mainly look at the ratings and divide your collections into Adults: R and PG13, Teens PG and PG13 and Children: G and PG? Or do you put them all together with proper labeling to guide patrons? Fair Use for the Visual Arts discussion at Cranbrook Art Museum, April 30, 2015

Please join your colleagues on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at the Cranbrook Art Museum for a discussion on copyright and fair use of images, texts, and other materials in creative and scholarly work. At its February 2015 conference, the College Art Association released its new Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for the Visual Arts (http://www.collegeart.org/fair-use/) The Code provides visual arts professionals with a set of principles addressing best practices in the fair use of copyrighted materials. It describes how fair use can be invoked and implemented when using copyrighted materials in scholarship, teaching, museums, archives/libraries, and in the creation of art. The Code addresses the following five questions: Analytic Writing: When may scholars and other writers about art invoke fair use to quote, excerpt, or reproduce copyrighted works? Teaching about Art: When may teachers invoke fair use in using copyrighted works to support formal instruction in a range of settings, including online and distance teaching? Making Art: Under what circumstances may artists invoke fair use to incorporate copyrighted material into new artworks in any medium? Museum Uses: When may museums and their staffs invoke fair use in using copyrighted works-including images and text as well as time-based and born-digital material-when organizing exhibitions, developing educational materials (within the museum and online), publishing catalogs, and other related activities? Online Access to Archival and Special Collections: When may archives, libraries, and other institutions and their staffs invoke fair use to create digital preservation copies and/or enable digital access to copyrighted materials in their collections? A grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is funding a series of regional sessions to present the Code and encourage discussion about its implications. Cranbrook Art Museum will host a session on Thursday, April 30, 2015, from 1:30-4:00 pm in the museum's deSalle Auditorium. Patricia Aufderheide, one of the Lead Principal Investigators for the Code, and Janet Landay, Project Manager for the Fair Use Initiative at the College Art Association, will outline the creation and the applications of the document. This will be followed by responses from five Detroit-area visual arts professionals. The afternoon will end with an open session for questions and discussion by all those in attendance.
