Metro Detroit Book & Author Society grants

Hi! Attached are the grant applications for the Metro Detroit Book & Author Society to be presented at the Fall luncheon. The 2015 Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award Applications are invited for a $1,000.00 Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award grant to be awarded to a Friend of the Library group in the metropolitan-Detroit area by the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society. This grant is awarded to support a program or project that fills a significant need affecting the library’s patrons and community. Friends of the Library groups in the metropolitan-Detroit area are eligible to apply. The grant will be presented at the Fall 2015 Book & Author Luncheon on Monday, October 19, 2015, at Burton Manor in Livonia. The winner will receive two complimentary tickets to the Fall 2015 luncheon and must be present to receive the grant. The award was established to honor the late Elaine R. Irvin, who was a devoted member of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Board for many years. Elaine worked for the Friends of the Detroit Public Library and was dedicated to the principle that “good libraries need good Friends.” The 2015 Dick Johnston Award Applications are invited for a $1,000.00 Dick Johnston Award grant from the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society. This grant is awarded to a public library in the metropolitan-Detroit area for the purpose of establishing or improving a library collection. Public libraries in the metropolitan-Detroit area are eligible to apply. The grant will be presented at the Fall 2015 Book & Author Luncheon on Monday, October 19, 2015, at Burton Manor in Livonia. Library Director, Redford Township District Library Perfect opportunity for career advancement! All this library needs is an energetic director to continue its growth and success. The Board of Trustees of the Redford Township (MI) District Library is seeking a visionary leader with a strong commitment to public library service to join its exceptional team. The Redford Township District Library has an independent Board of Trustees and enjoys tremendous public support. In November 2014 voters approved an additional millage request by more than a 2/3 majority, returning the library to financial stability. The class V library is housed in a 65,000 square foot facility built in 2004, has an operating budget of nearly $1.8 million, a staff of 37 (8 MLIS), and serves a diverse population of nearly 50,000. The library takes pride in providing an outstanding collection, a beautiful facility and friendly staff who make customer service a top priority. The position requires an MLS/MLIS from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association. Additional requirements include: at least six years of professional library experience, of which five or more have been in management or supervisory roles; a thorough knowledge of public library service and trends; proven experience in successful financial management; an understanding of technology and its application in public libraries; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with many diverse groups. The successful candidate will have experience working with local government officials and building upon community partnerships.
