Indirect public service: compiles bibliographies and similar tools to promote the Media collection; prepares displays; assists the public service departments in maintaining order, weeding, and other collection development activities for non-print materials. Create and maintain online reading lists and newsletters. Policy: assists in the development and implementation of library policies and procedures. Professional development: maintains knowledge of state-of-the art technologies and directions. Seeks opportunities for professional growth and development. REQUIREMENTS: Minimum: Current enrollment in a library science Master's degree program. The provisions included in ESEA through the Every Child Achieves Act would support effective school library programs and we need your help to ensure that they are included. Talking Points: * Maintain the provisions included under S. 1177<http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/thru?ep=AAAAC2Flc0NpcGhlcjAxerOuzXCX7BwWL5eQO…>, the Every Child Achieves Act, that would support effective school library programs. Library of Michigan Research Open House Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in Michigan History The National History Day welcomes you to explore the theme, Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History, during the 2015- 2016 academic year. This theme is broad enough in scope to encourage investigation of topics ranging from local to world history and across any geographic area or time period. Consider this theme an invitation to look across time, space, and geography to find examples in history of when people took a risk and made a change. LM staff will be giving tours of the Library with a special focus on this year's History Day theme, Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History<http://www.nhd.org/contest-affiliates/annual-theme/>. meeting room question

Hi all, We have a meeting room that can be rented out, and we have a request for it that I wanted to ask about. One of the home school families would like to rent out our meeting room and attached kitchen for their high school chemistry class to do experiments. Have any of you had this kind of request? Or any suggestions? I am a bit hesitant to do this because I have safety concerns with them doing experiments in an area that is not specifically set up to be a lab. Ann Patchett to speak in Alpena on Sunday, Oct 4

We are excited to announce our Fall 2015 Author: Ann Patchett. She will appear on Sunday, October 4 at 7:pm at the Alpena High School Auditorium. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Library, or online at www.alpenalibrary.org Ann Patchett is a celebrated author, a devoted reader and a champion of literary culture. She has written seven books and is a frequent contributor to many publications, including The New York Times, Atlantic Monthly and The Wall Street Journal. She has served on the board of the Nashville Public Library Foundation and in 2011, when the last of Nashville's bookstores had been shuttered; Ann declared "I have no interest in living in a city without a bookstore." And so, in November of that year she opened Parnassus Books, a new refuge for the written word in the old "Athens of the South." In 2012 TIME named Ann one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World for her efforts on behalf of the literary community. Writing of her friend on the occasion of that event, novelist Elizabeth Gilbert described Ann as "a woman of wisdom, determination, generosity and courage." Ann published her first story in The Paris Review while still a student at Sarah Lawrence College. Bel Canto, her fourth novel, was published in 2001 and was awarded the Orange Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award. The world-renowned Lyric Opera Company of Chicago has commissioned a production based on that novel that will premiere in 2015. Her most recent novel State of Wonder was published in 2011. The Washington Post called that book "the smartest, most exciting novel of the summer" and Library Journal described it as "superbly rendered." State of Wonder will be our Community Read book this year. Ann is also the author of two works of nonfiction including Truth & Beauty, which won the Heartland Prize for Nonfiction in 2004.
