Hello all! I am looking at reinventing our website and would appreciate any insight in to user-friendly software. We are currently using Joomla for our website but I just feel like we are looking pretty dated when I see newer, flashier sites. I don't mind spending some money on product and getting things set up but I would like to be able to manage all updates in-house. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! DIRECTOR, SUPERIORLAND LIBRARY COOPERATIVE (Michigan) Superiorland Library Cooperative (Michigan) The Superiorland Library Cooperative is seeking candidates for the position of Director. The Cooperative focuses on collaboration and resource sharing among its 38 public library members in northern Michigan and is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors. The staff of 5 use an $850,000 budget to offer innovative technology strategies, access to electronic resources, technical training and support, public library consulting and to manage the Upper Peninsula Region of Library Cooperation (UPRLC), an integrated library system, which serves 85 school, public, and tribal libraries. The Superiorland Cooperative is headquartered in Marquette, the largest city in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and home to Northern Michigan University. Marquette, located on the spectacular shores of Lake Superior, was named one of the “Ten Best Small Cities to Raise a Family” by Forbes Magazine (October 2010). Northern Michigan is renowned for its four-season natural beauty and virtually endless recreational opportunities. Additional requirements include proven fiscal and personnel management abilities; strong verbal and written communication skills; a thorough understanding of library technology trends and applications; and, a collaborative, approachable personal style that will develop effective working relationships with Board members, library directors and trustees, staff, community and governmental groups and the general public. The ability to lead an organization through change, to interact effectively with multiple constituencies, and to serve as an active representative of the cooperative within the region, state and nationally is essential. The Director is expected to share the cooperative’s belief that “Cooperation among members makes better library service possible and growth sustainable.” Experience working with or reporting to a governing board is desirable. Successful grant-writing desirable. Contract negotiation and management experience, as well as ERate experience, is desirable. Aimed at children in third and fourth grades, where state history is taught in Michigan's schools, Michigan History for Kids goes beyond the textbooks, exploring the history and heritage of all Michigan's peoples. The magazine, which was designed to be a supplemental aid in classrooms, also thoroughly integrates Michigan's Grade Level Content Expectations and other emerging standards into the content. Using both print and digital platforms and a racial-equity lens, each issue brings to life a different part of our state's past and features unbiased stories about the diverse people, places and events that have impacted Michigan over time. "In every issue of Michigan History for Kids, we strive to cover all aspects of our state's history and also include stories of people of color, who are normally overlooked or often forgotten in traditional academic materials, so that students develop a more complete understanding of Michigan's history," said Larry Wagenaar, HSM Executive Director and Publisher of Michigan History for Kids. "The diverse stories, along with thought-provoking questions and fun activities, engage students and make history meaningful to children throughout the state." To ensure that Michigan History for Kids and <http://michigankids.org/> www.michigankids.org are valuable resources for educators, HSM had them thoroughly evaluated and tested by several focus groups, including one that consisted of nearly 40 teachers and 1,400 third and fourth graders. To align with the school year and teachers' needs, the magazine is published bimonthly, minus the two major summer months when there are no classes, and the accompanying website provides interactive activities, expanded information and audio files that read the stories to students. Online lesson plans have also been created, which provide more detailed activities that can be used in the classroom. The lesson plans amplify the magazine's content and present additional information that enhance the students' learning experiences. "The Editors of Michigan History for Kids have especially sought out authors from underserved and minority communities," added Wagenaar, "which enables educators to teach Michigan's history from new perspectives." The Michigan Humanities Council is currently accepting applications for spring 2016 sessions of Prime Time Family Reading Time. Prime Time strives to bring underserved communities into host libraries to help families bond around the act of reading and learning together. The program also enables host sites to show families everything their local library has to offer. Grant awards of up to $13,000 are available to implement this award-winning program.
