Low-Vision Collection
by Keegan Sulecki 09 May '16

09 May '16

Hi Everyone, Here at Chelsea we have a low vision collection that contains a variety of magnifiers including hand held at different magnifications levels, a full page magnifier sheet, and even an Optivisor headband. It has been awhile since we have added anything new to this collection, so I am interested to finding other items that might be a good additional to what we already have. If your library also has a Low Vision collection, I would love to know if there are any unique items that have been particularly helpful to the low vision needs of your users. Links to examples would be appreciated! Thanks, Keegan -- Keegan Sulecki Head of Adult Services Chelsea District Library 221 S. MiVirtualCareerFair is an exciting and engaging tool by Pure Michigan Talent Connect<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> to bring together Michigan companies and talent! Business in Michigan is thriving, and MiVirtualCareerFairs are the state of Michigan's new innovative way to find talent. Since 2012 the State of Michigan has sponsored eighteen MiVirtualCareerFair events, connecting over 271 employers and 35,822 job seekers. On average the virtual events attract more than 4,000 registered candidates seeking job opportunities. During MiVirtualCareerFairs, event participants can: * Communicate in group chats and private chat messages with employers. * Upload, view, and search for job postings and apply directly from the site. * Interact with other participants in the Networking Lounge. * Explore career development resources in the Resource Lounge. * Talk with Pure Michigan Talent Connect Staff about your job search and learn more about utilizing MiTalent.org for your job search. * Interested in finding opportunities in the non-profit sector? The Michigan Non-profit Association<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> will provide assistance and resources to those interested in employment with a non-profit organization. * Veterans can connect with staff at the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA)<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> booth to learn about veteran benefits in Michigan. * Access archived job openings for 30 days after event. You can come back in and apply for jobs or search for specific employers to follow up with. How to participate: 1. Register<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> for the event by Wednesday, May 11, 2016. After registering for the event, log in, update your profile, and upload your resume. 2. Attend the virtual career fair on May 11! On the day of the event, representatives from exhibiting companies will be available virtually from 10:00AM to 4:00PM to answer questions and accept job applications. You will have access to all company postings and transcripts of your interactions for 30 days following the event. Participating job seeker tips: Do Your Homework. Before the event, take some time to learn about the organizations attending the career fair. Click here to see a full list of participating employers.<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> Be organized and engaged. Have questions prepared ahead of time that you'd like to ask participating employers. Engage with representatives in the booth group chat room or in a private chat message to keep conversation going and leave the employer with a positive impression of you. Keep the Dialogue Professional. Even though it is an online event, you should still use complete sentences and proper grammar for chat conversations with potential employers. Be Patient. Technology is a great tool but it is not a perfect system. Errors and other technical difficulties may arise and cause event attendees to experience delays. In addition, organization representatives may be managing several conversations at once so it could be a few minutes before they can address your question or comment. Interviews are not guaranteed and you may have to go to an employer's external website to apply for positions. Past participant experiences: "I live in the Western Upper Peninsula, and was hoping there would have been more telecommuting positions available. However, I did learn a lot about the current job market, where to focus my training and what was available in Lower Michigan if I ever do decide to relocate. Thankfully, I found a solid career locally, and I am sure the Virtual Career Fair did contribute to my success in securing the new position." "I appreciate your efforts to expose those of us that are unemployed with opportunities to see what is readily available for employment." "The virtual fair was excellent, had an opportunity to interact with a lot of recruiters on line and learned a lot." Library Director Position-closes May 15! Champaign Public Library - connecting our community with the power of knowledge, the world of culture and ideas, and the joy of reading. The Board of Trustees of the Champaign Public Library <http://www.champaign.org/> seeks a creative and innovative leader as its next Library Director-a leader working strategically with staff, residents and community organizations creating a shared vision for future library services and programs. The successful candidate oversees and manages the Library's facilities which include the Main Library, the Douglass Branch and the FriendShop Bookstore. Serving as Champaign's dynamic community hub, the Library hosts 1,675+ library and community meetings and events. Since 2011, the Library has been an annual Library Journal "four star" library. In 2014, the Library won the John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award for the Library Foundation's "Show Some Library Love" campaign. Fundraising efforts resulted in a 30% increase in gifts received and a 60% increase in dollars raised. With a $6.6 million annual budget and the support of the Friends of the Library and the Champaign Public Library Foundation, the new director and staff (69 FTEs) will analyze community needs and recommend policies, strategies, programs and services to provide new opportunities for community engagement. The Library is affiliated with the City of Champaign and the Director serves as a member of the City's Executive Management Team. The Library is a member of the Illinois Heartland Library System, a consortium of 545 member libraries in central and southern Illinois, and maintains a separate Polaris ILS shared with the Urbana Free Library. Champaign <http://ci.champaign.il.us/> offers an appealing combination of big city cultural and recreational amenities and a small friendly city atmosphere. Champaign serves a growing city population of 82,000 and county population of 200,000. At the intersection of education, innovation, and micro-urban living, Champaign residents are proud of the city's rich history, ethnic diversity, and strong sense of tradition; care deeply for their city; and participate actively in the issues which shape the community. Lying within the crossroads of three of the country's largest cities-Chicago, Indianapolis and St. Louis-Champaign is distinctively placed in an ideal location. Champaign owes its vibrant college-town atmosphere to the presence of the University of Illinois, a top-ranking public university with a current enrollment over 40,000. Strong academic programs, including the #1 ranked Graduate School of Library and Information Science program in the nation, attract outstanding faculty from across the globe and one of the largest international student populations in the country. Additionally, Parkland College, the exceptional Unit 4 School District, and 15 private and parochial schools provide excellent educational opportunities. Champaign also gains financial stability from a diverse industrial, professional and economic base, with an emphasis on technology, government and business employment. The city's neighborhoods offer numerous lifestyle choices including the urban character of downtown living, charming center-city neighborhoods, or new subdivisions with spacious homes. Extensive parks, bicycle-friendly roads, amateur sports, and a diverse array of artistic and cultural opportunities contribute to the outstanding quality of life in Champaign. For additional information on the Library, the City and the area see Champaign Links <http://www.gossagesager.com/champaignlinks.htm> . Responsibilities. The Library Director provides strategic, innovative and visionary leadership by strategically aligning the interests of the library's various stakeholders to shape the current and future role of libraries. Champaign Public Library's next Director must have the ability and the desire to work with the Library's Board of Trustees, library staff, and City Council and staff in developing a workable team approach to advancing the library as a keystone institution for Champaign. The challenge is to develop effective methods to increase and fully embrace citizen participation as a critical component in library strategies and programs that add value in education, employment, entrepreneurship, empowerment, and engagement. The Director will also engage the community and other City units in program planning and implementation and manage the library system in accordance with policies established by the Library Board of Trustees. Other responsibilities include planning, directing, and supervising all aspects of library services, facilities and activities and being responsible for budgeting, financial administration, personnel administration, facilities management, development, technology management, and marketing and community relations. The Director provides counsel to the Library Board, proposes and implements policy under the Board's direction, supervises the work of the Library managers, and collaborates with other city agencies and community groups and members to meet the information needs of various constituencies. Qualifications. An ALA-accredited Master's Degree and a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in library management and supervision are required; or any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the requirements of the position. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of library practices, management techniques, collection development, and technology applications and experience working and communicating effectively in a culturally diverse community. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, advisory boards, City administration, all levels of employees, diverse community groups, and citizens is expected. Other desired characteristics include experience in successfully securing funding for programs and services and experience in planning and presenting the Library's long-term equipment, facilities, and staffing needs. A strong commitment to public service and high quality customer service delivery is necessary.
