Ignition Grants for Libraries Program, you must: *be either a unit of State or local government or be a private nonprofit organization that has tax-exempt status under the Internal Revenue Code. These small grants encourage libraries and archives to test and evaluate specific innovations in the ways they operate and the services they provide. Sparks Grants support the deployment, testing, and evaluation of promising and groundbreaking new tools, products, services, or organizational practices. You may propose activities or approaches that involve risk, as long as the risk is balanced by significant potential for improvement in the ways libraries and archives serve their communities. Successful proposals will address problems, challenges, or needs of broad relevance to libraries and/or archives. A proposed project should test a specific, innovative response to the identified problem and present a plan to make the findings widely and openly accessible. To maximize the public benefit from federal investments in these grants, the Sparks! program will fund only projects with the following characteristics: Broad Potential Impact-You should identify a specific problem or need that is relevant to many libraries and/or archives and propose a testable and measurable solution. Proposals must demonstrate a thorough understanding of current issues and practices in the project's focus area and discuss its potential impact within libraries and/or archives. Proposed innovations should be widely adoptable or adaptable. Significant Innovation-The proposed solution to the identified problem must offer strong potential for non-incremental, significant advancement in the operation of libraries and/or archives. Rick Snyder to veto a campaign reform bill that would ultimately impact Michigan residents' access to campaign information. Senate Bill 571 was passed on Dec. 16, with amendments from the House including a provision that bars government employees from using public funds to distribute information about a local ballot proposal 60 days before it appears on the ballot. "While the intent of the Michigan legislature may be to ensure that government employees are proper stewards of public funding," said Feldman, "In actuality, this broad-sweeping bill prohibits one of their public bodies - the library - from doing one of its main jobs: providing the voters of Michigan unbiased access to information, including factual information about local campaigns and ballot measures. On behalf of librarians around the country, I urge the governor to veto this bill." The provision in question is Item 3, Section 57, which states: "A public body, or a person acting for a public body, shall not, during the period 60 days before an election in which a local ballot question appears on a ballot, use public funds or resources for a communication by means of radio, television, mass mailing, or prerecorded telephone message if that communication references a local ballot question and is targeted to the relevant electorate where the local ballot question appears on the ballot." In addition, public employees violating this ruling could be fined anywhere from $1,000 to $20,000 and could be imprisoned. Free Items to Give Away!

Hi all, We have FREE items to a good home - one puppet tree rack, three media kit racks (although you can hang anything else you want on them), and a felt board/easel (felt board on one side and an easel on the other). These items are used, but in good condition. I've attached pictures of the items. First come, first serve, but you must pick the items up yourself. However, I will be attending the Youth/Teen TLN meeting on Jan. 8 at Westland, so if you are planning on attending the meeting and you want them items, I can bring them with me. I will be out of the office until Monday, Dec. 29, so please do not expect a response from me before then. Any questions, just ask! The bill is expected to be formally presented to Governor Snyder soon.
