Rick Snyder to veto a campaign reform bill that would ultimately impact Michigan residents' access to campaign information. Senate Bill 571 was passed on Dec. 16, with amendments from the House including a provision that bars government employees from using public funds to distribute information about a local ballot proposal 60 days before it appears on the ballot. "While the intent of the Michigan legislature may be to ensure that government employees are proper stewards of public funding," said Feldman. "In actuality, this broad-sweeping bill prohibits one of their public bodies - the library - from doing one of its main jobs: providing the voters of Michigan unbiased access to information, including factual information about local campaigns and ballot measures. On behalf of librarians around the country, I urge the governor to veto this bill." The provision in question is Item 3, Section 57, which states: "A public body, or a person acting for a public body, shall not, during the period 60 days before an election in which a local ballot question appears on a ballot, use public funds or resources for a communication by means of radio, television, mass mailing, or prerecorded telephone message if that communication references a local ballot question and is targeted to the relevant electorate where the local ballot question appears on the ballot." In addition, public employees violating this ruling could be fined anywhere from $1,000 to $20,000 and could be imprisoned. The new "Toddler Time" at the Hartford Public Library will be on Thursday, Jan.14th at 10:30am. We encourage all parents, caregivers and children to come to the new storytime. There is no time limit. You are your child may play with other children and visit with other parents. There will be stories and activities for the children. The library has two child friendly computers with early literacy programs. We have lots of Duplo Legos for constructive building. This program is weekly and replaces the Wednesday storytime. For more information call the library at 621-3408. We are continuing our Adult Coloring Group which meets twice a month on Mondays. The next coloring group will meet on Monday, Jan.11th from 5pm to 7pm and Monday, jan. 25th from 5pm to 7pm. No registration is required and you may come at any time between 5pm and 7pm. All materials are provided and the program is free to everyone. "Family Lego Night" is Wednesday, Jan. 20th from 5pm to 7pm. Parents are invited along with their children to create a themed Lego project. There will be a drawing at every monthly Lego Night. No registration is required and you may participate any time between 5pm and 7pm. Our new program, "Family Maker Space" will be begin on Monday, Feb. 1st from 4pm to 5pm.

Contacting home libraries for non-resident cards

Hi all, I was wondering how many of you call a patron's home library before entering a non-resident or guest card into your system. As part of the Library Network, the majority of our visitors have cards already in our shared system, but there are some that are not, including MILibrary Card holders. Do you call or contact these types of patron's home libraries before giving them privileges? If so, do you allow patrons some limited privileges before you validated that their account is in good standing? What methods do you use to contact and keep track of these patrons?
