Good morning everyone, For anyone who needs a back to work pick-me-up after the (USA) holiday weekend, I offer you a brief video of KDL staff members playing with kittens. Our HR Department worked with the local humane society to bring small groups of kittens to a variety of branches for our staff members to play with and enjoy. They provided terrific summer reading stress relief! https://youtu.be/ko6QCSiROPE Enjoy! -Heidi Heidi Nagel Kent District Library Manager of Communications & Programming 814 West River Center, NE Comstock Park, MI 49321 616-647-4146 hnagel(a)kdl.org<mailto:hnagel@kdl.org> [50px_rss-square-social-media]<http://www.kdl.org/blog> [50px_facebook-square-social-media] <https://www.facebook.com/KentDistrictLibrary/> [50px_instagram-square-social-media] <https://www.instagram.com/kentdistrictlibrary/> [50px_twitter-square-social-media] <https://twitter.com/KDLNews> [50px_goodread-square-social-media] <https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/86141-kent-district-library/>

by Jan Davidson 01 Jul '16

Libraries Read: 1 Book discussion events announced "Is Google making us stupid?" Nicholas Carr asked, in a celebrated Atlantic Monthly cover story. Carr delves further into the question in his book The Shallows: What The Internet Is Doing To Our Brains, the selected title for "Libraries Read: 1 Book." MCLS invited library staff across Indiana and Michigan to place votes on one of four titles to select one book that we will all read and discuss together for professional development. Nicholas Carr's book captured the most votes. In The Shallows, he explores the net's intellectual and cultural consequences. MCLS encourages library staff to read the book throughout the summer, then join us in a Twitter chat and regional discussions about the book. According to Randy Dykhuis, MCLS Executive Director, "During 2014, MCLS conducted a series of community conversations with librarians throughout Indiana and Michigan, utilizing the tools from the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation. The desire to have discussions in many formats, and to communicate with one another outside of our silos was a recurring theme. By reading one book together, we aim to create deeper connections among libraries that span geographic and other boundaries." Book Discussions * July 21, 2 pm Eastern. Twitter Chat.
