Library Camp Unconference at AADL - Friday, April 15

Library People! You are invited to attend Library Camp: An Unconference on Friday, April 15, 2016 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. This event is intended for information professionals and graduate students with an interest in libraries. It's an informal, unconference-style gathering intended to bring people to share ideas, technologies, and to spark discussion. Library Camp is free to attend and will be held at the Downtown Library at 343 South Fifth Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI. Click here to register. The goal is to get a bunch of people together, and let them talk about whatever they'd like to talk about, within the rough purview of libraries and library technology. We'll start with a blank schedule and start the day with a discussion of topics we'd like to talk about to fill in the agenda. We've got time for four sessions and room for at least 4 concurrent sessions, so there could easily be 10-12 different things to talk about during the day. Bring your ideas and quandaries. StoryWalk Question

Hello: We have received a grant to install a StoryWalk(r) http://www.kellogghubbard.org/storywalk in a local park. Has another library in Michigan already installed one? If so, will you contact me off list? It would be very helpful to hear experiences, pitfalls and successes as we embark on this project. I look forward to hearing your stories. I had the opportunity to attend a webinar yesterday hosted by the Muskegon Area ISD featuring school media specialist Joan Vincent showcasing MeL's Research in Context, Opposing Viewpoints in Context and BritannicaSchool and how useful they are for teachers and students. Help. A young woman I know is looking for a book that she remembers from Kindergarten. This would have been late 80s-early 90s. She told me that it was about a boy who got a star-shaped sticker that he put on his forehead and it left a white spot when he got a tan. I have been searching online and have found the following descriptions from others searching for the same book. No results were posted where I found this. " *I don't remember the title or author, but it was a children's book, probably from the 60's, about a boy who received a star sticker from his teacher. The star was placed on his forehead, and he was so proud of it that he wouldn't wash his face for fear that the star would come off. His face got dirtier and dirtier until somehow the sticker fell off or was removed, and then there was a white star shaped spot on his forehead where the sticker had been, surrounded by the dirty skin. *unknown, Weekly Reader, 1965 or 1966. I remember reading this story when I was in 1st or 2nd grade. I recall that it was in a Weekly Reader magazine. The young boy won the gold star because he had been able to count to 100, had been able to say the alphabet from A to Z, and had been able to name the seven basic colors. FREE PubMed and Emergency Preparedness Course Offering - 7 MLA Credits - March 24, 2016

Good Afternoon! The Metropolitan Detroit Medical Library Group (MDMLG) is proud to be hosting a two course event at WSU's Shiffman Medical Library on March 24, 2016 from 8:30am to 4:30pm. Holly Ann Burt will be teaching "Keeping up with PubMed" in the morning and "Emergency Preparedness for Libraries" in the afternoon. These courses are FREE to attend and are being brought to you by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Greater Midwest Region (GMR). We encourage you to participate and hope you can join us! Keeping Up With PubMed - 4 MLA CE Credits (8:30am to 12:30pm) With a hands-on approach, this class will show attendees how to use the features of PubMed effectively. Attendees will be able to describe the contents of PubMed; formulate basic search strategies; display, print, and save results in various formats; revise and refine searches; and use special features such as Related Articles, Link to journals, Citation Matcher, and Clinical Queries. The instructor will demonstrate online searches and students, at computers connected to the Internet, will be invited to follow along. Time for individual practice will be provided. Emergency Preparedness for Libraries - 3 MLA CE Credits (1:30pm to 4:30pm) The class examines strategies to assist librarians with preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies. Topics include learning how to conduct a basic risk assessment for their libraries and craft a basic emergency preparedness plan including strategies for continuing library services during the emergency; disaster planning models; types of resources available for emergency planning and recovery; relationships with first responders, vendors, and other libraries; and issues related to salvage. Class activities provide the opportunity to discuss and begin developing continuity of service plans and related processes. Hayden, Nominee for Librarian of Congress, Library of Congress:* Dr. Carla D. Hayden is CEO of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, Maryland, a position she has held since 1993. Dr. Hayden was nominated by President Obama to be a member of the National Museum and Library Services Board in January 2010 and was confirmed by the Senate in June 2010. Prior to joining the Pratt Library, Dr. Hayden was Deputy Commissioner and Chief Librarian of the Chicago Public Library from 1991 to 1993. She was an Assistant Professor for Library and Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh from 1987 to 1991. Dr. Hayden was Library Services Coordinator for the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago from 1982 to 1987.
