Want to be informed on the state of school librarians in MI? Please join us for a MAME 17 workshop!
by Klaudia Janek 04 Oct '16

04 Oct '16

Did you miss the AASL/ESSA Saturday workshop? Did you know that out of 3469 schools in MI only 8% have 1 full time School Library Media Specialist. That means 282 full time school librarians in the whole state of MI who are dedicated to 1 building. Michigan is one of only six states that has suffered a loss in reading achievement. There is a possibility of ESSA being able to change this dismal statistic! Be informed. Come to the MAME 17 workshop October 17 at Mercy High School. After school. Lisa Kelley, Klaudia Janek and Michael French will sum up AASL's message. Kathy Lester will share MAME's advocacy efforts at the state level. You don't want to miss this workshop! You also get to enjoy a nice dinner with your librarian friends! Small Libraries Create Smart Spaces Grant Opportunity
by White, Shannon (MDE) 04 Oct '16

04 Oct '16

Imagine the different things your community could do and the different ways you could engage your patrons, if only your library space wasn't, well.... your library space. Then read on for an exciting announcement of a new grant from OCLC! Applications are now being accepted for the Small Libraries Create Smart Spaces grant. A smart space is one that fosters social connections allowing a community to discover active learning opportunities in their library. Fifteen small public libraries (serving communities with fewer than 25,000 people) will be selected to receive instructional and material support to engage their communities in a space transformation process that supports active learning at the library. Small Libraries Create Smart Spaces<http://oc.lc/smartspaces> is a two year project funded by a National Leadership Grant from Institute of Museum and Library Services<http://www.imls.gov/>. Selected libraries will participate in an online orientation and community of practice facilitated by WebJunction, OCLC's public library program. They will work with each other and their communities to reimagine and reconfigure their library spaces as hubs of active learning and engagement. Learn more about the grant here<https://www.webjunction.org/news/webjunction/smart-spaces-participant-overv…> including requirements and expected time commitments. Get your imagination caps on because applications<https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/smart-spaces> are due Oct. 21st! Responses for complaints about Halloween at libraries
by Ojibwa Community Library 04 Oct '16

04 Oct '16

Hi Everyone, Thank you so much for the feedback and responses to my questions! It appears that most places haven't had an issue, which puts me at ease a bit. I also appreciate all of the ideas about activities for a Halloween event, as well as the resources and templates for dealing with patron complaints about any event. Being a newer director, this information is priceless! Thank you! Angela Badke Library Director Ojibwa Community Library 409 Superior Ave. Baraga, MI 49908 906-353-8163 -----Original Message----- From: "Ojibwa Community Library" <oclib(a)up.net> Sent: Wednesday, September 28, 2016 11:28am To: michlib-l(a)mcls.org Subject: [Michlib-l] complaints about Halloween at libraries? Hello all, Has anybody ever had a patron, or group of patrons, who have complained or challenged the library about a Halloween themed event? I am currently planning a small Halloween themed story time and craft event here. However, I have a group of patrons, who have mentioned that their children are not allowed to read some of the fantasy books we have in the library because they are encouraging thoughts about ghosts, magic, and the supernatural. While they have not challenged the books, I am concerned that they might complain or challenge the event. I was just wondering if any other libraries have had this come up. Any help is appreciated! Thank you! Angela Badke Library Director Ojibwa Community Library 409 Superior Ave. Baraga, MI 49908 906-353-8163
