State Librarians Excellence Award - updated

On behalf of State Librarian Randy Riley - with updated dates! Dear Library Directors, Trustees, Institution Administrators, and Library Users, The Library of Michigan Foundation is pleased to announce that nominations for the 2016 State Librarian's Excellence Award are now being accepted. The State Librarian's Excellence Award recognizes a Michigan Library that best exemplifies excellence in customer service. Roger Mendel will sponsor the $2,000 cash prize awarded to the winning library. The Foundation is pleased to announce this year that the Citation of Excellence Award amounts have increased from $500 to $1,000. Two runners-up will be recognized with a Citation of Excellence. All three award-winners will receive trophies for public display. We hope you will consider nominating your library this year! The criteria is described on the attached nomination form. The deadline for nominations is August 19, 2016. Winners will be announced at the State Librarian's Luncheon on Friday, October 28, 2016, during the 2016 Michigan Library Association Annual Conference in Lansing. Eunice covered Academic OneFile in a recent MeL Minute; this message includes a link to a video and an attachment for your review of the changes to this MeL resource: As you know, Academic OneFile is getting a little face lift. I wasn't sure if you were able to join in on the webinars last week about so I thought you may want to watch the on-demand video instead:) This new feature differentiates our product from others in the market! To provide users with discipline aligned topics, we leveraged our superior subject indexing and combined it with taxonomies from Cengage Learning's textbooks. Our Journal Aggregation team worked with subject matter experts to identify discipline related publications enabling us to deliver a smaller focused set of discipline related results. This new browsing feature adds to the current Academic OneFile experience. All the familiar searches--like Basic, Advanced, Subject, and Publication--are still available options. Browse by Discipline Gale Blog post<http://blog.gale.com/product-update-for-academic-onefile/?utm_campaign=shar…> Additional recent changes and enhancements to the InfoTrac product family include: * "Related Resources" a recommendation tool, offers additional content. At the bottom of article, users will be recommended similar articles of interest. * "Did you mean" spell suggestions offer possible search terms after a misspelling renders few or zero results. Helping the user overcome one of the biggest obstacles to a successful search. * Based on the success integration of Google Apps for Education, we will be retiring the Gale Account feature for all InfoTrac products. Users can still access their content through August 2016, but new documents cannot be retained within Saved Documents. We had Ron Rademacher give a presentation on Michigan Back Roads Trails & Treasures at our library today and he did a wonderful job. He is very engaging, reasonable in price and gives information that many people can use. This is the second time he has presented here and I would have him back for another presentation! Genesee District Library Receives Big Read Grant.

I'm pleased to announce that the Genesee District Library is been awarded a NEA Big Read grant of $14,000 for 2016-2017, selecting Jack London’s The Call of the Wild. Our kick-off events will feature Creek Stewart, survivalist expert from the Weather Channel’s Fat Guy in the Woods, speaking at two branches on Saturday, September 24th<x-apple-data-detectors://37>.<x-apple-data-detectors://37> Other programming will include Michael Oakes, a Jack London expert and impersonator, along with various national wolf and dog experts. We are grateful for our partnerships with the Davison Middle School and Grand Blanc West Middle School which have committed to having their 6th and 7thgrade classes read The Call of the Wild in the fall. In addition, our partnership with the Flint Youth Theater means that over 800 students will engage with the classic through reading, listening to and experiencing a theatrical interpretation of the classic.
