Job Announcement Lyon Township Public Library Part-time Youth Services Librarian Position : Youth Services Librarian Supervisor : Library Director Salary : $17-$19 per hour DOQ Schedule : 25-29 Hours per week, including evening and weekend hours Benefits : paid holidays, vacation, sick and personal day, continuing education The Lyon Township Public Library is seeking a part-time Youth Services Librarian to start ASAP. We are seeking an energetic & enthusiastic person with experience with children’s programming and a love and dedication for children’s librarianship. We are a small library in a growing community in southwest Oakland County . Must have a good sense of humor and customer service philosophy. Typical Duties * Contributes to the overall effectiveness of providing direct service to patrons * Plans, promotes and implements all Youth programming ages 0-17 including Summer Reading Program * Collection development, evaluation and weeding of youth collections, including books, magazines, audio books, DVDs & videos, CDs & databases * Provides reference and readers advisory to all ages * Conduct computer based instruction and homework help * Prepares displays * Attends monthly staff meetings * Actively promotes the library in the community and represents the library at community events * Gives presentations to school and community groups * Submits relevant information for the library website, flyers and brochures * Orders supplies for programs and services relevant to Youth Services * Participates in fundraising activities for the library Required Qualifications and Abilities * MLIS from an ALA accredited University * Course work and concentration in youth and children’s services * Knowledge of age appropriate programs 0-17 years * Knowledge of print and electronic resources and materials for youth * Knowledge of library automation systems * Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers * Ability to make decisions in accordance with library policies and procedures * Ability to think analytically and to develop new procedures for more efficient work flow * Knowledge of standard office and library machines (i.e. photocopier, fax machine, printers) * Familiarity with current technology and electronic sources of information. * Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. * Excellent understanding of library policies, procedures, philosophy and public service values. * Ability to maintain composure in stressful work situation. Michigan Rails 2016: Authors, Books, Maps, and More and the Library of Michigan

Please join us for a full day of Michigan railroading sessions October 8th at the Library of Michigan, 9:00 - 4:30 Topics to be covered include: passenger trains, research sources, Upper Peninsula railroads, south east railroad lines, preservation efforts, rail photography, boat trains and the Pere Marquette 1225 engine. Rare Michigan railroad material will be on display along with a railroad cookbook browsing collection in the Martha W. Griffiths Michigan Rare Book Room. As a special gift, event goers will take home a memento from the outstanding staff from the Michigan State University Special Collection Library. A reproduction from the Cookery & Food Collection in the Michigan State University Libraries, a 1941 menu from the Super Chief, a line of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad Company. Fletcher Public Library <https://www.alpenalibrary.org/> *Sunday, October 9 at 2 p.m.* *//*A preview screening of///Hamilton’s America, /the documentary film that brings history to vivid life through the lens of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s pop culture Broadway phenomenon /Hamilton/ – winner of 11 Tony Awards® and the Pulitzer Prize — will be held at Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library <https://www.alpenalibrary.org/>on Sunday, October 9 at 2 p.m. David Nicholas, CMU Public Radio producer and host of “Mosaic,” will co-host the event on Sunday and follow up on Monday with a live broadcast from 9 a.m. to noon from the Library. The public is encouraged to attend both events.Highlights of the 2016 PBS Arts Fall Festival will also be shared. The story of Alexander Hamilton is most remembered for its dramatic conclusion, which saw Hamilton killed in a duel by Vice President Aaron Burr. But the full story of this political genius – a poor immigrant who built himself up from nothing to become one of the nation’s most vital architects – has largely been forgotten by history…until now. Today, Hamilton’s fan club is vocal and growing, thanks, in no small measure, to Tony®, Grammy®, and Emmy®-winning composer and actor, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary musical. With its young cast claiming America’s history as its own, /Hamilton /is redefining how audiences learn about history. The programshows just how timeless the hot-button issues of today’s America are: immigration, States’ rights, debt, income inequality, and race relations. Hi everyone, Here's a description of one of our upcoming library programs (flyer attached): Want to write about your life? If so, consider attending the free “Memoir Writing Workshop” at Henry Ford Centennial Library, 16301 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, in Room 30 on Wednesday, September 28, 6-8 p.m. R.J. Fox—a Dearborn native, graduate of Edsel Ford High School and University of Michigan-Dearborn, and author of *Love & Vodka: My Surreal Adventures in the Ukraine*—will offer advice on how to write your own memoir. “There is nothing in life that can't be turned into a story,” says Fox. “You don't have to be famous to write memoir. You don't even need to have a profound experience to write about. Sometimes, the most mundane memories from our life can make for the most interesting, relatable experiences—if written in an entertaining and thought-provoking way.” He also points out: “In many ways, memoir writing is similar to movies based on real-life people. There is usually a mutual understanding that not all of it can be 100% exactly the way it happened. You are not a news reporter.
