by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 26 Jan '17

26 Jan '17

Brought to you by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services February 1, 2017 @2:00PM EST This webinar will consider the role of technical services in the library of the 21st century, and the importance for library leaders to understand the positive impact technical services librarians can have on attaining strategic goals. The webinar will identify current trends in the broad library and scholarly publishing environments, the impact of digital technology on researchers' information workflows and scholarly communication, and the impact of open science on research and libraries. The potential role of technical services in driving library responses, including the curation of the scholarly record, a drive towards large-scale distributed library collections, and campus research information systems will all be reviewed in detail. New Research on Staff and Leadership Development in technical Services Online Course!
by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 26 Jan '17

26 Jan '17

Brought to you by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services. Wednesday, 2/15/2017 Session 2 of the five-session series Re-envisioning Technical Services: Identifying Leadership and Talent Management Best Practices Over the past several years, the area of technical services has evolved and the boundaries of technical services has become fuzzy. The scope of technical services is changing and interconnecting with other areas of the profession. Library technical services departments and staff now have unique and special training needs prompted by changing standards, new formats, and innovative technologies. In addition, technical services, like other departments in libraries, are facing leadership and succession planning issues. In 2015-2016, the Association of Library Collections & Technical Services President's Program Committee designed an online survey that was sent out to librarians and staff in technical services (including Libraries in ARL, Oberlin, and the University Libraries Group) that asked 28 questions regarding the major issues faced by technical services including: What new skills are needed in technical services? How are libraries developing staff skills? How are libraries handling training needs? How are libraries addressing leadership (gaps and staff placed in new leadership roles)? How are libraries identifying emerging leaders? How are libraries dealing with succession planning? The presentation will highlight the results of the online survey and provide detailed information regarding new skills, training, leadership and succession planning. For more information and to register for this online workshop, visit http://www.ala.org/alcts/confevents/upcoming/webinar/reenvisioningtechservi…. Evette M. Kindle Questions
by Hollie Ayres 26 Jan '17

26 Jan '17

My library is planning to start lending out Kindles for our patrons to use, and we have some questions for any library that has experience doing this. Did you set up an Amazon account specifically for the Kindle downloads or did you just use a corporate account? Are we able to purchase one copy of each Kindle book and then download that title on more than one Kindle at the same time? Have you had any issues with patrons accessing titles? Any other tips or advice? Thank you for your help. Hollie Ayres Teen Services/Marketing Lincoln Township Public Library 2099 W. John Beers Rd. Stevensville, MI 49127 (269) 429-9575

MeL Minute - GovDelivery options
by Borrelli, Eunice (MDE) 26 Jan '17

26 Jan '17

Hi all, Periodically we are asked how the MeL Minute messages are delivered, who can access them, and how to subscribe. Currently, the messages are sent via e-discussion lists that the Michigan library and educator communities have access to, namely, michlib-l(a)mcls.org<mailto:michlib-l@mcls.org>, meldatabases(a)mcls.org<mailto:meldatabases@mcls.org>, mamelist(a)mcls.org<mailto:mamelist@mcls.org>, and gmr-mhsla(a)list.uiowa.edu<mailto:gmr-mhsla@list.uiowa.edu>. In addition, as appropriate, the MeL Minute content is posted to http://mel.org/. Recently, we've added a new delivery method, GovDelivery, which is a system used by government organizations worldwide to increase digital engagement, connect with over 120 million citizens, build communities around data, and support training initiatives. Some of you may already receive GovDelivery messages from federal government agencies (Commerce, Census, Labor) as well as state of Michigan departments. So, what does all this have to do with the MeL Minute? It means that for individuals for whom subscription to one of the above mentioned e-discussion lists isn't an option, they can sign up for GovDelivery and get the same MeL Minute content that's delivered to the lists but without all the other postings and discussions . It's easy and quick. [cid:image002.png@01D2763A.CE86FEE0] <https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/MILOM/subscriber/new> The direct link to this service is found on the Library of Michigan<http://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan> home page under Stay Connected. Potential subscribers enter a valid email address (or sign in using Facebook, Google, or Yahoo) to view the newsletter options offered by the Library of Michigan such as Library of Michigan Dispatch Newsletter and now, the MeL Minute. Simply check the ones of interest and click submit. The next screen lists newsletters from over 20 additional state of Michigan agencies available for subscription. Attorney General Consumer Alerts, DEQ, State Police, MEDC Pure Michigan featured deals, Dept. of Agriculture Food Recalls, and the DNR are among those listed. Feel free to share this information with interested staff, patrons, and community partners. MeL Minutes are brought to you by the Library of Michigan. Want more information on MeL? Stay tuned for the next MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, email us at contact(a)mel.org<mailto:contact@mel.org> or visit http://mel.org<http://mel.org/>. Looking For an All-Staff speaker
by Cory Grimminck 26 Jan '17

26 Jan '17

I'm planning our annual all-staff day, and would like to find someone who can speak about reference interviews/reference interactions/how to do reference. Our staff is small--only 11 people including me--and most of them have had no training in reference work at all. I'm looking for about 90 minutes of basic reference training . . . what the goals are, how to figure out what the patron is asking, how to know when the interaction is done, maybe some sources that can be used, etc. Our all-staff day is currently scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, from 9-4. I can offer mileage, and a delicious potluck lunch. Please let me know if you are interested. Thanks, Cory Grimminck Portland District Library
