Posting: Position: Support Services Shelver, Permanent Part-Time Job Duties: * Sorts and loads carts for shelving; shelves and shifts materials in the public areas; shelf reads; reports problems with shelf organization to the Support Services Supervisor. * Directs patrons to Reference staff for assistance. * Assists with opening and closing procedures for the Support Services Department. * Assists with the overall maintenance and orderliness of the Library's collections, display areas, and department areas. * Assists other Support Services staff with operations of the ILS module and the AST system. * Assists Librarians with special projects with the approval of the Support Services Supervisor. * Adapts and responds to multiple priorities, interruptions, and demands; retains knowledge and stays up-to-date on current Library policies and procedures; communicates effectively with patrons, co-workers, and professional colleagues; resolves problem situations and collaborates across departments in a positive manner. * Assists in accomplishing the Library's and the Support Service Department's goals. * Performs other duties as assigned. Metro Detroit Book & Author Society grants

Hi! Attached are the grant applications for the Metro Detroit Book & Author Society to be presented at the Fall luncheon. The 2016 Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award Applications are invited for a $1,000.00 Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award grant to be awarded to a Friend of the Library group in the metropolitan-Detroit area by the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society. This grant is awarded to support a program or project that fills a significant need affecting the library’s patrons and community. Friends of the Library groups in the metropolitan-Detroit area are eligible to apply. The grant will be presented at the Fall 2016 Book & Author Luncheon on Monday, October 17, 2016, at Burton Manor in Livonia. The winner will receive two complimentary tickets to the Fall 2016 luncheon and must be present to receive the grant. The award was established to honor the late Elaine R. Irvin, who was a devoted member of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Board for many years. Elaine worked for the Friends of the Detroit Public Library and was dedicated to the principle that “good libraries need good Friends.” The 2016 Dick Johnston Award Applications are invited for a $1,000.00 Dick Johnston Award grant from the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society. This grant is awarded to a public library in the metropolitan-Detroit area for the purpose of establishing or improving a library collection. Statewide Book and AV Discounts (2015 - 2018): BN Addendum (2015 - 2018)

All, As you are aware, every three years TLN sends an rfp for statewide discounts for books and av materials to selected vendors. The current edition of the rfp was issued in July, 2015 and went effective October 1 of that year. In previous cycles Barnes and Noble had been a participant in the Michigan statewide discounts, by virtue of a reply to the rfp. This time around, on account the rfp apparently landed on the desk (and in the inbox) of a person who had left the company, no response was forthcoming. BN was made aware of this discrepancy, and asked if they could participate by virtue of an addendum. There is precedent for this; I recall a time many years ago when Baker and Taylor neglected to reply to a book (av didn't much exist in those years) bid issued by what was then known as Wayne Oakland Library Federation. As WOLF did in excess of $1,000,000 annually in centralized acquisitions business with B&T in those days, we felt it prudent to issue an addendum for our then two county library system. The circumstances are a bit different now, but as many libraries n Michigan do business with BN we were on board with an addendum for them. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Regularly empty book drops and bins according to established schedule, or more frequently as directed. * Examine materials for completeness and condition and follow established procedures for processing. * Accurately check in items using the library's automated system. * Place items in correct location on library shelves, hold shelves, appropriate carts, or other appropriate area, following established procedures. * Maintain correct order on library shelves by periodically performing shelf reading. While shelving, correct shelving errors as they are discovered. * Maintain established shelving quota. * Explain to patrons the purchase and use of copy cards, and assist in their use. * Assist patrons who ask for help in public areas, referring them to other staff or departments as needed. * Assess and direct workflow in Sorting Area as needed. * Assist in opening or closing of library (specific shifts). * Maintain neat and orderly library appearance throughout each shift. * Stay informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, SharePoint, library newsletter and blog. Contribute content as appropriate. * Enforce library policies using a polite and professional approach. * Accept special assignments or duties in support of the library's goals and objectives. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS * Basic general knowledge and ability to respond to simple oral and written communication, such as typically gained through a high school education. * Ability to accurately sort and shelf alphabetically and numerically. * Ability to work independently without close supervision after training is complete. * Ability to operate computers and computer software. * Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions. * Punctuality and dependability. * Consistent display of public service attitude that reflects the library's values. * Ability to maintain discretion in handling confidential library matters. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Prior experience in a public library or comparable customer service experience. ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS * Sufficient physical agility to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, sit, lift up to 25 lbs., and push carts weighing up to 200 lbs. * Manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to grab, hold, and shelve materials and read small print on labels. * Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permits the employee to communicate in writing and verbally. * Sufficient vision which permits the employee to produce and review a wide variety of materials in both electronic and hard copy form. * Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions in a fast-paced environment. Each participant will be given one MaKey MaKey and one littleBits kit to take back to their library for programming use and/or circulation to the public ($200 value!). The afternoon will offer two breakout sessions. The first being for children's staff: an interactive Inclusive storytime session with hands-on activities and implementation ideas with Bloomfield Township Public Library's Jen Taggart and Michigan Braille & Talking Book Library's Stephanie Wambaugh (Bridgid Turner from LARA will be speaking on behalf of Stephanie at our Marquette workshop).
