Mapping current state of movement-based programming in Michigan public libraries
by Noah Lenstra 31 May '17

31 May '17

Hello Michigan librarians, I am emailing to ask for your assistance in a project to map the current state of movement-based programming in public libraries. Based in part on the results of a survey distributed earlier this year, I have compiled a list of 571 public library systems in North America that offer movement-based programs on an ongoing, recurring basis. I am asking you to take a look at the results for Michigan, and to please send additions and retractions: http://www.letsmovelibraries.org/map/Michigan/ <http://www.letsmovelibraries.org/map/Michigan/> Particularly lacking in this directory are annual or seasonal programs – programs offered less frequently than once a month – as well as “library of things” initiatives that encourage movement and physical activity (e.g. checking out state park passes, bicycles, nature kits, etc.). To incentivize participation in this initiative, individuals who submit additions or retractions to this directory during the months of June or July 2017 will be entered into a drawing for one of five $50 Amazon gift cards. Please share this message with others who may be interested in this project. Thank you for your time. I look forward to your feedback. The Let’s Move in Libraries <http://letsmovelibraries.org/> project is focused on understanding how public libraries create opportunities for individuals of all ages and abilities to move and be active. Free Virtual Mini-Conference: Digital Literacy & Fake News TOMORROW, THURSDAY June 1
by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 31 May '17

31 May '17

Tomorrow (Thursday, June 1st) is our second of three Library 2.017 mini-conferences: "Digital Literacy + Fake News," being held online (and for free) from 12:00 - 3:00 pm US-Pacific Daylight Time<https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=Library+2.017&iso…> (click for your own time zone). In the first hour, Bryan Alexander will host our special opening panel discussion, joined by Mnar Muhawesh, Doug Belshaw, and Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe. Then we will have 14 practitioner-led sessions that look deeply at the foundational relationship of libraries and librarians to media, information, and digital literacy. Bryan will also give a closing keynote at the end of the three-hour mini-conference. More information on the keynote panelists, plus the titles and presenters of the individual sessions, is listed below. We invite all library professionals, educators, students, and others to participate this event. Register and you will also be sent a special list of resources and links for this event and the topic, curated by our keynote panelists and our speakers. This is a free event, being held online. REGISTER HERE<https://digitalliteracyandfakenews.eventbrite.com/> to attend live or to receive the recording links afterwards. Please also join the Library 2.0 network<http://www.library20.com/> to be kept updated on this and future events. What does "digital literacy" mean in an era shaped by the Internet, social media, and staggering quantities of information? How is it that the fulfillment of human hopes for an open knowledge society seem to have resulted in both increased skepticism of, and casualness with, information? What tools and understanding can library professionals bring to a world that seems to be dominated by fake news? In this Library 2.107 mini-conference, we start with the foundational relationship of libraries and librarians to media, information, and now digital literacy, and then we ask some pointed questions. How should library and information professionals address the issues of fake news, propaganda, and biased research? What technical skills are required for critical thinking in the digital age? As learners increasingly move from just consuming information to also socially producing it, what are the new requisite skills of critical thinking and decision-making? What are appropriate uses for social media when conducting research? What is digital citizenship in a global, globally-diverse, and often globally-fragmented world? What work on digital literacy is available, what frameworks already support these efforts, what are the perspectives of the leading thinkers? Evette M. Looking for a Friends of the Library expert!
by Hope Nobel 31 May '17

31 May '17

Good afternoon, everyone - We are working on an agreement between our Friends and the Library, and I need someone who can attend a meeting to provide an outside, nonpartisan perspective on what a healthy version of this relationship looks like. Can any of you make a recommendation? An individual with experience in this area who is well versed in best practices and structural integrity of the Friends/Library partnership would be ideal. This is a rural area, with very little professional experience represented on the Friends board, so it's essential that our guest be able to speak to the group about professionalism without danger of intimidation or condescension (tricky, I know). A little background information: We're blessed with an active Friends group that raises an impressive amount of funds annually. Unfortunately, the historical relationship between the Friends and the Library has involved an exceptionally high level of support from the Library to the Friends and the blurring of many lines, resulting in expectations that are unfair to the library and to my staff. My efforts to correct areas of dysfunction have been ignored when approached tactfully, and have been the occasion of offence when stated with more clarity. There are broad areas of expectation that are neither appropriate nor realistic, and I need another voice to come on board and help us see where change is needed. If any of you have experienced similar situations and have advice for me, I welcome that as well as speaker recommendations. Thank you, Hope E. Nobel, M.S.L.S. Director Tamarack District Library P.
