PLA Video Contest for National Library Legislative Day

Videos sought for National Library Legislative Day PLA is inviting public library staff to be a part of our grassroots advocacy efforts by participating in our first-ever National Library Legislative Day Video Contest<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT02NDAyMDY5JnA9MSZ1PTEwMDc0MTc2ODImbGk9ND…>! National Library Legislative Day<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT02NDAyMDY5JnA9MSZ1PTEwMDc0MTc2ODImbGk9ND…> is a two-day advocacy event that brings hundreds of librarians, trustees, library supporters, and patrons to Washington, D.C. to meet with their members of Congress and rally support for library issues and policies. To join in this important event, simply create a 60-second video featuring clips of your patrons talking about why the library matters to them. The best entry, as determined by the PLA Legislative and Advocacy Committee, will receive a $100 gift card to offset the cost of two member registrations for the National Library Legislative Days. ALA Washington Office staff will also share the video with the winning library's U.S. Representative and make an announcement to its local media outlets. The deadline to submit a video is 11:59 p.m. Central Time on Saturday, April 15. Digital Literacy Tutorials now available in Spanish at DigitalLearn.org

PLA releases digital literacy tutorials in Spanish Spanish speakers have access to digital literacy training resources now that all learning content on the PLA DigitalLearn.org website, https://www.digitallearn.org/ , is now available in Spanish. Visitors may access the site in Spanish by simply clicking the link marked "Español" at the top of any page. DigitalLearn.org is a collection of self-directed tutorials for end-users to increase their digital literacy. Feedback from public library staff directed PLA to develop courses on the most basic skills, such as using a computer, navigating a web site, and searching. Modules are video-based with narration, 6 to 22 minutes long, written at the 4th grade reading level, and help learners practice skills like using a mouse and setting up passwords. Nearly 60,000 users complete 15,000 modules each year on DigitalLearn.org. DigitalLearn.org also features a community of practice<http://community.digitallearn.org/> to help digital literacy trainers, library staff who are interested in digital literacy training, and others share information. From 2014 to early 2016, PLA had over 10,000 registered users on the community of practice, with over 400 posts to share information and seek resources. DigitalLearn.org was created in 2013 with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. It is just one tool the Public Library Association, a division of ALA, offers to help its members make their libraries digital literacy learning centers. Hey Jessica, Your unusually high numbers for those two days were most likely caused by issues we were experiencing on the MeLCat system in the month of January. Those reported numbers were probably duplicate counts of a single or a few actual renewal messages. Thanks. And thanks to all who have submitted proposals in the 1st round. You are encouraged to get more specific about your plans. Where will the remote units be sited and who will be served at each new hotspot? Your prior submissions are now open for modification and improvement. After we review the updated (and new) more location-specific proposals, we will invite the most promising ones to contact vendors for price quotes and plan feasibility. There have been some very strong proposals already, but the door remains open. For two more weeks. Please be sure describe how each remote location is expected to be used, by whom and when. Include any disadvantaged populations (low-income, low-education, disabled, immigrants, etc). "Successful proposals will: * Support access and inclusion to underserved populations. * Show creativity in thinking of new ways and locations to install remote library WiFi access points. * Form key collaborations among community stakeholders such as schools, museums, health clinics, community centers, post offices, shelters, or who?! * Demonstrate commitment to the project from proposal partners and supporters as well as to the overall learning and knowledge base we'll be creating together. * Integrate TVWS in to disaster preparedness planning. Winning proposals will be announced next month in April. Sub-awards distributed upon final acceptance of a project budget. All projects should be installed and operational by September.
