Linda S. Champion Scholarship
by Lisa Valerio-Nowc 08 Nov '17

08 Nov '17

Good Morning, Last April we lost a leader, and passionate advocate of libraries with the passing of Linda S. Champion. Library folks in Macomb County will remember her most as the Director of the Macomb Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped from 1989-2000. She was a good friend and mentor to many librarians, and to me as well. It is my honor to pass on the information about the scholarship that has been set up in her memory to help those who wish to pursue a career in Library Science. Applications for the scholarship are being accepted by The Suburban Library Cooperative. If you know of a student who could benefit from this scholarship please pass the information on to them. Thank you. Lisa Valerio-Nowc Library Administrator Royal Oak Twp Public Library 21131 Gardenlane Ferndale, MI 48220 248-542-9205 lvalerio-nowc(a)tln.lib.mi.us

Fw: Got patrons with health questions? PLA/NNLM sessions at upcoming conferences may help you provide answers
by Steven Bowers 08 Nov '17

08 Nov '17

May be of interest. ________________________________ Americans are bombarded with information related to their health, but the messages they receive may not be understandable, reliable, or even credible. Faced with confusing medical terminology, conflicting reports, and a constantly changing healthcare system, people are looking to their local public libraries for guidance. Are you prepared to help them? The Public Library Association (PLA) and the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) will host programs at two upcoming library conferences as part of Promoting Healthy Communities<https://apply.ala.org/plahealth>, a new nationwide initiative intended to increase public library workers’ knowledge and skills related to consumer health services. The first will be a special “unconference” event at the 2018 ALA Midwinter Meeting<https://2018.alamidwinter.org/> in Denver. This discussion group session, titled “Public Libraries Supporting the Healthy and Wellness of Your Community” will be held 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11. Unconference participants are encouraged discuss ways to provide quality health information to library patrons. At the PLA 2018 Conference<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT03MDUwMjk0JnA9MSZ1PTEwODgzOTE1NzQmbGk9ND…> in Philadelphia, PLA and NNLM will offer a preconference workshop<http://www.placonference.org/program/stand-up-for-health-health-and-wellnes…> titled "Stand Up for Health: Health and Wellness Services for Your Community." Held on Tuesday, March 20, this full-day workshop will review core competencies of providing health and wellness services; coach participants through understanding their communities’ needs; and explore how to create health-related programming for different age groups and special populations. Fifty stipends of $500 are available to offset the preconference registration fee, travel and lodging expenses. Details can be found here<https://apply.ala.org/plahealth/guidelines>, and stipend applications are due by Nov. 19. This project has been funded in whole or in part with Federal funds from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, under Grant # 1UG4LM012346-01 with The University of Iowa.

ALA News for Nov. 7, 2017 NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION PLA and Gail Borden Public Library expand digital literacy training resources DigitalLearn.org, the Public Library Association’s (PLA) website designed to help consumers increase their digital literacy skills, now includes a robust suite of resources and tools for library staff and other educators to use when conducting training in the community. PLA has completed the incorporation the learning modules that comprised Gail’s Toolkit, a project developed by the Gail Borden Public Library District<http://www.gailborden.info/>, located in Elgin, Illinois. Library scheduling software
by Adrienne Breznau 07 Nov '17

07 Nov '17

Hello! My name is Adrienne and I recently started working at Royal Oak Public Library. I am looking for a good scheduling software to make our system more user-friendly and less time consuming. I used When to Work at my last library in Washington (and I loved it) but I was wondering if anyone here in Michigan Library Land has experience with anything else? The other ones I am considering are Snap Schedule, Schedule Base, and Lib Staffer. Please reply off list and let me know if you have any experience with any of these companies, or if you have a different one you use to do your schedule. Thank you in advance for your assistance and input. -- Adrienne Breznau Head of Support Services Royal Oak Public Library 222 E.
