Square for card payments - compiled responses
by Helena Hayes 22 Dec '17

22 Dec '17

Wow! What a quick (and helpful) response. Librarians are awesome!! :->) I'm attaching a compilation of responses that I received, as well as a compilation from Janelle in Lapeer in response to a similar request last year. General consensus is that Square is an easy, cost-effective, and user-friendly tool. I'll let you draw your own conclusions, but I will tell you that nothing I received has changed my thoughts about wanting to go in that direction. Thank you to everyone for your replies. You are an invaluable resource, and I'm always grateful for your assistance and advice. Hope you all have safe and festive holidays! Here's to a positive start to the new year! Re-purposing high school reference sections
by Denise 22 Dec '17

22 Dec '17

I am a retired certified school librarian and am now on our school board. Since I retired, our small K-12 school has kept the library open with dedicated para pros and passionate teachers but I do not envision a return to any kind of nuanced, collaborative library program. The high school reference section has not been updated in any way for at least 10 years. There are many computers housed in the library space, a quality teen fiction section and a reasonable picture book and elementary section. As a school board, we may have access to some community foundation money for various worthy projects. I am anxious to quiz the brains on the list serve to see how high schools have managed their reference sections and if there are any ideas about how to better utilize this space. And what do we do with the reference materials that are outdated and unused? Hopefully this query provides a challenge for rumination over the holidays?! Thanks in advance for the help. Denise Bartlett, retired K-12 school librarian Former member of the Library of MI board

Square for card payments... yes or no?
by Helena Hayes 22 Dec '17

22 Dec '17

Hello. Quick question for the collective... does your library accept credit and/or debit cards for payments? If yes, do you use Square or something else? If you use Square, please share your experience - pros, cons, etc. Do you charge a fee or require a minimum charge? I'm trying to convince my Board that this is a good idea, but they are resistant. We get requests at least a couple times a week, so I obviously think it's a good idea from a customer service perspective. From what I've read, I don't see any negatives, but I'd appreciate your honest feedback. Please reply off-list. Thanks.
