Hello Michlib-I! Please join us at 2:00 PM, Sunday, November 2nd as we welcome Jay Hernandez for 61 Years Later: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy. November 22, 2024 is the 61st anniversary of that fateful day in Dallas when a vibrant young President was struck down in the prime of his life. Kennedy assassination expert Jay Hernandez brings a fact-based perspective to events and discusses how recently released classified documents shed new light on what we thought we knew. Jay is a technician for the Troy Police Department who has studied the Kennedy assassination for many years. He uses his law enforcement training to objectively look at the events of November 22nd, 1963 and encourages program attendees to make their decisions based on those facts. Lisa ** *YPSILANTI DISTRICT LIBRARY* *Job Posting: Head Librarian – Acquisitions Services * *(Full Time/40 hours per week, Non-Union)* *Date: *March 15, 2023 The Ypsilanti District Library seeks a dependable and organized librarian with supervisory and cataloging experience to lead our Acquisitions Services team. The position offers exciting challenges, as YDL intends to select and migrate to a new integrated library system in 2023. Acquisitions Services work spaces, renovated in 2022, are located at YDL-Whittaker. *Nature of Work/Responsibilities: *Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, the Acquisitions Services Head plans and directs the ordering, cataloging, processing, and payment of library materials using the automated library system. Supervising a staff currently comprised of 2.5 FTE Clerk II positions, the Head coordinates a smooth workflow of placing orders, receiving and checking in new materials, cataloging materials and making them shelf-ready. Duties include: · Supervises the day-to-day operation of the Acquisitions Department, including development and administration of its budget · Communicates effectively and provides active supervision of department staff*, *including scheduling, training, conflict resolution and performance appraisal · Serves on the library’s management team and actively participates in system-wide planning · Implements cataloging standards · Oversees serials management, orders materials processing supplies, and works effectively with vendors · Manages invoicing and collection budget using the ILS Acquisitions module · Responsible for district-wide ILL requests via MelCat · Collaborates with public service departments to introduce new collections and manage upgrades · Compiles statistics necessary to evaluate the department’s activities; prepares reports as requested · Fills in at public service desks when necessary to ensure excellent service · Other duties as assigned *Qualifications and Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * · Master’s Degree in Library Science or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution. · Minimum three years progressively responsible professional public library experience. · Previous supervisory experience directing workflow, developing procedures, and coordinating departmental operations · Financial management experience preferred · Ability to think analytically and develop new systems and procedures · Ability to motivate staff and establish/maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, vendors, and the public · Advanced computer literacy and thorough knowledge of automated library systems; previous migration experience a plus · Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely in oral and written form · Knowledge of MARC and RDA standards · Ability to make administrative decisions and interpret library policies · Demonstrated ability to work independently, organize work, and set priorities · Positive public service attitude *Salary/ Benefits: *$63,700-$80,000 annual salary. Questions about Propagation/Cutting Stations

Good afternoon, We are considering adding a plant propagation station here at the Westland Library. I have some questions for those of you who have those or similar elements in your library. If you're able to respond to any of these questions off-list, I sure would appreciate it! I can compile answers if anyone else is interested. * If you have a propagation station, do you also have a seed library? * What kinds of containers do you use to hold the cuttings? Are they self-standing, wall-mounted, or something else? Where did you get the containers? * Do they make a mess? What's your process for topping off/refilling with water? What about plants (like succulents) that do better rooting on top of the soil? * Have you gotten enough variety in donations to make this an interesting and dynamic service for patrons? * Do you purchase any plants to supplement your inventory? * Do you ever have the need to remove plants that don't fit the mission / are never taken / etc? * What is the process for patrons to take cuttings? Are patrons able to take a cutting without donating one first? How do you collect statistics? * What kind of education or resources do you provide along with cuttings? Thank you in advance! Please make a copy before editing (if you have a free account, let me know, I can help!). You'll want to add your own logo and library card, and replace where it says "NDL" and our website in the copy. You can also resize it for regular social media posting too, but please make a copy first if you decide to do that so that other libraries can also use this!
