The Library of Michigan will receive resources, training, and support through NASA@ My Library, a STEM education initiative that will increase and enhance STEM learning opportunities for library patrons through the nation, including geographic areas and populations currently underserved in STEM education. State Librarian Randy Riley said that collaborating with NASA and its partners creates a unique opportunity for public libraries across Michigan to access essential STEM resources, activities, and hands-on training. The resources and training will be available for local libraries across Michigan to access beginning in July. "The end goal of NASA@ My Library is to get STEM training to communities that may not have access to many STEM resources, and that public libraries make for an engaging site for the project," Riley said. "The Library of Michigan will be circulating activity kits directly to libraries to steer programming for all ages and will be offering training this fall to public library staff." The project is led by the National Center for Interactive Learning (NCIL) at the Space Science Institute (SSI), in partnership with the American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office, the Pacific Science Center, Cornerstones of Science and the Education Development Center. Additional support for this project comes from NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) and made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Most people would say “Yes!” without hesitation. One of the simplest ways to save and improve lives is by supporting organ, tissue, and eye donation. Since 2010, libraries across Michigan have participated in a simple and effective campaign to educate patrons about donation and transplantation, and to give them an opportunity to join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry<http://bit.ly/ML4Life>. The campaign is called Michigan Libraries for Life<http://www.librariesforlife.org/>. This statewide campaign, which includes public, academic, special and hospital libraries of all sizes has inspired over 3,900 people to sign up as donors! “Libraries have been great partners in saving and healing lives,” said Dorrie Dils, Gift of Life Michigan’s CEO. “They’ve been very successful at educating the public about the facts of organ, tissue and eye donation. Thanks to this partnership, Michigan Libraries for Life gives hope to the 3,200 Michigan patients waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.” More than 95% of Americans<http://organdonor.gov/dtcp/nationalsurveyorgandonation.pdf> support organ, tissue and eye donation. Yet in Michigan, only 63% of adults have joined the state’s donor registry. That discrepancy is largely due to residents not knowing how to properly join the donor registry. Michigan Libraries for Life helps to address that information need. “Someone you know probably needs - or will someday need - a lifesaving organ or tissue transplant. People die waiting because not enough organs are available. One million dollars is still quite a bit of money even today. It can buy a lot of things. Including hundreds of AWE Learning, Inc. workstations! They will help you to really bring your AWE workstations into your reading programs – this summer and all seasons ahead. If you have not received your copy please let me know. 4. Product updates. I often hear people say, “Your program titles seem to be the same. Is there anything new?” Yes, there is! Remember that the front screens of many titles are their branding screens. It is what they use to keep being instantly recognizable. Sesame Street, as an example, is instantly recognizable just by looking at their opening screen. Does that mean nothing actually changes in the program? No! Almost every program we include regularly updates their program in many ways great and small. You do have to connect the units to your Wi-Fi and in the administrative panel click on “Click here to start updates”. Please note that this email is using an external list that we are not allowed to match or update into our systems so if you are on the Do Not Email list please be assured this will be the only version to use this list. Cynthia Ward is a licensed attorney who previously served as the Assistant Dean of Students at Thomas M. Cooley Law School. She has also served a number of times as an "Honorary Judge" for the Teen Court Program. Ms. Ward is active in her community, having previously served on the board for the Lansing Area AIDS Network, the City of Lansing Park Board, and as a commissioner for the Lansing Board of Water & Light. She also provided pro bono assistance to the homeless through Cooley's Homeless Assistance and Prevention Project. She currently works for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, where she ensures the department's compliance with privacy and federal non-discrimination laws.
