He was raised in Ironwood, a small mining town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Number seven in a family of nine children, he lost much of his hearing due to double pneumonia at the age of eight months. After high school graduation, Luczak went on to Gallaudet University, in Washington, D.C., where he earned a B.A. in English, graduating /magna cum laude/. He learned American Sign Language (ASL) and became involved with the deaf community, and won numerous scholarships in recognition of his writing, including the Ritz-Paris Hemingway Scholarship. He took various writing courses at other schools in the area, which culminated in winning a place in the Jenny McKean Moore Fiction Workshop at the George Washington University. Nature has a rhythm and song, the order of life. A fox awaits quietly as a mouse scampers through the tall grass. The hawk watches from above and the owl knows where to hide. All dogs originated from wolves. Beavers engineer dams, robins build nests and fly south during the fall months. Human cruelty has occurred with leaps and bounds from cows lined up to be slaughtered to chickens crowded in small cages. Luczak has a point concerning human contact. Social media and cell phones have caused more separation for many humans. I remember a story about two teenagers not talking in the back seat when a parent picked them up from an event and the teenagers told the parent they were texting one another. Animals still continue to communicate. Wolves howl, birds chirp and house cats hiss when disturbed. Hi Everyone The Library Cooperative of Michigan and Midwest Tapes/Hoopla are proud to announce the opening of the registration for the Library Marketing Makeover with the links below. Libraries can sign up for one, two or all three sessions to learn about marketing in libraries. Trenton Smiley, Director of Communication Messaging for Midwest Tapes/Hoopla and his team have helped 7 libraries in Michigan with a Marketing Makeover. Of the 7 libraries there is at least one library from each class. Trenton will use these libraries to create the different sessions. Libraries can attend the sessions and get many different takeaways that they can bring back to their libraries. We are planning on recording the sessions and putting them up on the LCM website. Gather ‘Round the Table with Teens: A Food Literacy Workshop Food literacy is essential for teens to understand and learn about food in a positive way, including food skills and best food practices. Library staff that work with tweens & teens will benefit from this workshop designed to guide libraries to in turn support teens as they explore the impact of food on so many levels of their lives. Food Education Consultant Rebecca Antill will provide in-person workshops on how to plan and deliver nutrition & cooking programs for teens, featuring how to do so with minimal kitchen access. As a former librarian, Rebecca will offer a tailored learning experience that will equip library staff to offer food programming of all levels at their libraries. Basic health and safety information, kitchen classroom management, culinary skills and community partners will all be discussed as participants cook and share time together. Your story must have a catchy title, a protagonist that takes an action to make a change, and a beginning, middle, and end. A scoring rubric will be provided. Judging will take place in early August 2025 after the contest closes on July 31, 2025. We're not sure yet how many judges we will need, since we're unsure how many entries we will get. We're hoping that judges will read/score no more than 20 entries each. There are no qualifications needed here, just a willingness to read the entries and use the scoring rubric to assess them. We will whittle the list down to the Top 10 and from there, Katherine Applegate, our Summer Reading Champion, will choose the winner. The Michigan Service Hub is pleased to announce the release of the newly redesigned Michigan Memories <https://michmemories.org/>, a website that enables users to search the online collections of cultural memory institutions all around the state! Michigan Memories is the Michigan-centric counterpart to the Digital Public Library of America <https://dp.la/> (DPLA), with access to over one million records, a fresh look, and some important additions: - A new blog <https://michiganmemories.library.wmich.edu/blog> with RSS support; - An Exhibits <https://michmemories.org/exhibits> section that highlights interesting and memorable photographs and other records while exploring Michigan’s history; - An Education <https://michiganmemories.library.wmich.edu/education> section that explores different themes in our state’s history with resources to help teachers use primary sources in their classrooms. The Michigan Service Hub was created in 2015 as a collaborative project by the Library of Michigan, Wayne State University, the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Western Michigan University, and the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services. bike lock for checkout

Hello everyone, My director and I were just talking about adding a bicycle lock to our collection, as we have a lot of folks biking to the library, especially visitors in the summer who rent from the bike shop in our village. We get a fair amount of questions from folks coming in if they can bring their bikes into the library, which is against our policy for safety reasons, but we would love to offer this as an option. Does your library offer a bike lock for patron checkout? Brands/kinds to seek out or avoid are much appreciated! As are any pros and cons you've experienced with this.
