State Aid Report - error won't allow lock and submission
by jshirtz 04 Oct '18

04 Oct '18

Hi Kathy! I hope all is well with your family. :) I just attempted to Verify (and lock and submit) my State Aid Report, but the form is stuck on the Area of Square Feet of Outlet field. The number in the field is correct (11,500; it's been the same for forever), but I keep getting a "nullRequired Required: a value is required!" message when I try to Verify the information. Any thoughts? If I should direct my question elsewhere, please let me know. Thank you very much for your help! Jesse -- Jessica Shirtz Library Director Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library 317 N. State Seeks Public Input for Federal Preschool Development Grant
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 04 Oct '18

I consider public libraries a major resource for families with children birth to five. Please give a few minutes of your time, as an existing resource, to this survey<https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QGQZ8MZ> from MDE. Details below (or attached). Thank you, Cathy Lancaster Youth Services Coordinator Library of Michigan 702 W. Kalamazoo St. Lansing, MI 48915 LancasterC5(a)michigan.gov<mailto:LancasterC5@michigan.gov> | 517-335-8129 | www.mi.gov/libraryofmichigan<http://www.mi.gov/libraryofmichigan> Follow us: Facebook<https://www.facebook.com/libraryofmichigan/> | Twitter<https://twitter.com/libraryofmich> | Instagram<https://www.instagram.com/libraryofmichigan/> From: Martin Ackley <MDE(a)govsubscriptions.michigan.gov> Sent: Thursday, October 4, 2018 2:38 PM To: Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) <LancasterC5(a)michigan.gov> Subject: Michigan Department of Education Press Release [MDE Logo] News Release Contact: Martin Ackley, Director of Public and Governmental Affairs, 517-241-4395 Bill DiSessa, Spokesperson, 517-335-6649 State Seeks Public Input for Federal Preschool Development Grant Application October 4, 2018 LANSING - The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is seeking public input on its application for the Preschool Development Grant Birth through Five (PDG B-5) opportunity from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. "We need input from parents, providers, and partners to make this a successful grant application," said Interim State Superintendent Sheila Alles. "This application includes updating a strategic plan, based on a needs assessment that identifies strategies to improve collaboration, coordination, and the overall quality of programs and services, and we're seeking public input for that." MDE has designed a brief online survey to engage stakeholders for their input. Parent, providers and stakeholders are encouraged to provide their input through the survey by October 12, 2018 at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QGQZ8MZ<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbXNpZD0mYXVpZ…> Those taking the survey will be asked to share: what information you would like Michigan to collect during the needs assessment; how Michigan can better support parental choice during their child's early years; and how to increase collaboration and improve transitions from early childhood care and education programs to elementary school. The PDG B-5 Grant Opportunity is a competitive grant program designed to support states in coordinating and aligning early childhood care and education programs, resources, and services that already exist, improving program quality; facilitating better partnerships between programs and improving the transition from early childhood programs into elementary school; increasing program operating and cost efficiencies; expanding parental choices and involvement; and ensuring families are linked to the full range of services they need. The grant will focus on the existing resources in the state and supporting families to engage in their children's education across the age span. The grant will not fund additional preschool "slots" for children. Michigan's application will particularly focus on supports for children ages 0-3 years, which supports Michigan's Top 10 in 10 Goals 1 and 5 to provide every child access to an aligned, high-quality P-20 system from early childhood to post-secondary attainment and ensuring that parents are engaged and supported partners in their child's education. Below are links to the full grant application and documents from a technical assistance webinar held on September 18. https://ami.grantsolutions.gov/index.cfm?switch=foa&fon=HHS-2018-ACF-OCC-TP…<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbXNpZD0mYXVpZ…> https://www.acf.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/occ/pdg_b_5_applicant_training_…<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbXNpZD0mYXVpZ…> In addition, a dedicated email address will collect questions and thoughts through October 11. MeL Minute: The New MeL.org Is Here!
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 04 Oct '18

04 Oct '18

Greetings Michigan Library Community, [cid:image002.png@01D45BE8.898397F0]The new MeL has launched! If you haven't checked it out yet, please come on over to https://mel.org. This October saw changes across the board at MeL: a new look (even an updated look for MeLCat Classic<https://elibrary.mel.org/>!), the addition of many new databases, and a new focus. Our tagline - Supporting Michigan Libraries - means just that. We're here for you. We want to help you use the MeL resources to assist your patrons locally, rather than being their one-stop shop. If you've never embedded the links to the individual MeL eResources onto your own library websites, we encourage you to do so. You can find instructions on how to do that here<https://mel.org/library-staff/operations/direct-urls>. If you're having any difficulties with that process, that's something you want to talk to the good people staffing the MeL Databases Help Desk at the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services about. They can be reached at: meldatabaseshelp(a)mcls.org<http://meldatabaseshelp@mcls.org> and they'll work with you individually to resolve those issues. There are several things to know about the new site: Some of the redirects from the old site did not carry over due to factors beyond our control. Below are the three primary URLs to update or remove from your own site. * Mel.org/databases is not active. Please use https://mel.org/az.php instead. * Kids.mel.org is no longer in use. Please use https://mel.org/kids instead. * Teens.mel.org and mel.org/teens are no longer in use; we no longer have a Teens portal. Please check any other redirects you are using. Have you noticed the new sections of MeL devoted to Library Staff<https://mel.org/staff> and Educators<https://mel.org/educators>? We have schedules of upcoming vendor webinars, recordings of past webinars, short videos, referrals to PDFs and websites, MeLCat help, and much more to assist you in making the most out of the new suite of eResources. We also have several versions of the new logo<https://mel.org/c.php?g=874665&p=6280193> for use on your own site. Will you be at the Michigan Library Association annual conference in Novi later this month? Stop by the Library of Michigan booth! We'll be conducting lightning rounds of usability testing on the new site on Wednesday the 17th from 11:30-1:00 as well as during the evening reception and Thursday the 18th from 1:30-2:30 . You'll be asked a (very) short series of questions and we'll use your feedback to continue to refine the site. We'll never be finished making MeL better. Do you have comments or questions about the new MeL? We welcome them! You can reach the MeL team at this online form<http://mel.org/contact>. If you receive feedback from patrons about the changes, we encourage you to direct them to this form and we'll be happy to reply to their input, positive or negative. Brought to you by Sonya Schryer Norris of the MeL Team. Want more information on MeL? Stay tuned for the next MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, email us at contact(a)mel.org<mailto:contact@mel.org>, visit http://mel.org<http://mel.org/>, or sign up for the MeL Minute and other Library of Michigan e-mail lists via GovDelivery<https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/MILOM/subscriber/new>. We encourage you to share MeL Minutes with your colleagues and networks. MeL eResources are available to Michigan residents or Michigan library or school access only. #IMLSGrant Sonya Schryer Norris Library Consultant Library of Michigan 702 W.
