Jonesville District Library INVITES SUBMISSIONS FOR THE POSITION OF: Library Assistant DATE OPENED: 04/30/2018 PART-TIME: 20 Hours/ week including evenings and Saturdays THE POSITION Jonesville District Library seeks a self-motivated individual. Background in libraries is preferred. Under the supervision of the Senior Library Assistant, exercises various library skills, providing patrons with technical assistance in library operations and materials use. Performs a variety of reference/circulation desk duties, assists patrons with various questions using print and computer resources, prepares displays and assists in the development of library programs. Additionally, may be responsible for specific segments of library service, specializing in designated areas. The ideal candidate will demonstrate vision, enthusiasm for public service, and an appreciation for the role that libraries can play in building strong communities. We seek someone who has excellent interpersonal skills and enjoys working with colleagues in a collaborative environment, someone who can be a team player and adjust to change. Building relationships is crucial to this position and the successful candidate will foster connections and promote the library to all parts of the community. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Assists at the circulation, information, and public services desk; aids patrons in library and on the phone answering reference and routine questions; processes materials being checked in and out using the automated circulation system. 2. Assists patrons requesting technical assistance in the use and location of reference and general reading materials using online public catalog, reference materials, databases, internet, and other print/electronic sources. 3. Receives and processes interloan requests. Checks in materials and notifies patrons of arrivals. 4. Assists in planning and organizing library programs for the community. Assists in scheduling activities and compiling necessary materials. 5. Conducts tours of the library for groups as need arises. 6. Assists in preparing and setting up displays, exhibits and bulletin boards to maintain an informative and attractive physical setting. Library Director Jonesville District Library April 27, 2018 7. Makes changes in item records as needed. 8. Updates and replaces periodic publications such as daily newspapers and weekly and monthly magazines. 9. Assists in shelving library materials as needed. 10. Attends various seminars, conferences and workshops and reads various journals, magazines and professional publications to keep current on the latest methods and techniques in library services. Additionally, continually reads newly printed materials, reviews book lists and discusses materials with other staff to be knowledgeable of materials for selection. 11. Maintains building security, assuring that windows and doors are locked at the end of the business day. REQUIREMENTS * Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent. * Experience working in a public library is preferred. * We are seeking a candidate with strong interpersonal, communication, programming and public service skills to support the library’s community engagement goals. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION * Is able to lift 35 pounds. * Has understanding of procedures for processing of materials. * Assists in collection maintenance. * Assists in specific selections of collections * Schedules use of the library by outside groups. * Keeps informed of current developments in library field by attending workshops, professional meetings, and reading current literature. * Provides reference and reader's advisory services to patrons as needed. * Performs other related responsibilities as necessary. Some responsibilities include: * Provides input and assistance to the Director in strategic and long-range planning; budgeting; policy development; marketing and public relations; collaboration and partnerships and other functions and projects as assigned. * Ensures the efficient, effective, and capable operation of the following public library services: Circulation, Reference Services, Adult Programming, Audio-Visual, Interlibrary Loan, Indiana Room, and Teen Services. * Supervises and provides guidance to department staff. * Assists with development, budgeting and evaluation of departmental programs and services. * Participates in the selection, training, and evaluation of departmental personnel in the appropriate areas of oversight. * Oversees collection development to ensure a balanced and vibrant collection. * Cooperates and coordinates with other departments to meet library goals and objectives. * Promotes library services and programs within the library and the community. * Follows and enforces library policies to assist in providing safe conditions for staff, public, and building operation. Takes appropriate action in building emergencies. This position requires an individual with strong commitment to public service and the ability to serve staff and patrons in a professional, helpful, cooperative, and courteous manner. Candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and possess a good command of the English language in order to interact in a professional manner. Must have knowledge of modern library systems, policies, procedures and services, and the ability to apply that knowledge. Must also have the ability to handle multiple priorities and apply problem solving skills. In addition, candidates must have expertise and proficiency with computers and computer-equipment, and must be able to successfully use basic office applications and the internet, including databases and social networking sites. Minimum Requirements: * Master's degree in Library Science from ALA accredited school required. * Ability to achieve Indiana Library Certification 3 or higher within 6 months. * Minimum of three years professional library (public preferred) experience with at least one year in a supervisory position. * Must be able to speak, hear and see; sit or stand for an extended length of time; reach with hands and arms; occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel and crawl; occasionally lift/carry or push/pull up to 25 pounds. Simple instructions for using Square for credit card payments

Hello Library Community - I wonder if any of you have put together a simple instruction sheet to help staff members to familiarize themselves with Square. I would happily take instructions for both the traditional Square reader and the new bluetooth reader. I have done a search on the Square site and on Wiki-How and both sites are a bit more involved than I need. Thanks in advance for any help provided! The Beginning Workshop is a 3-day event geared for library staff members that have not had the opportunity for formal library coursework. Its aim is to introduce library staff to a variety of topics and offer them practical skills that they can use working in a public library. Anyone new to the profession or just hired at a library, no matter what their academic credentials, is welcome to attend the event. For those seeking an initial Level 3 or Level 4 certificate from the Library of Michigan attendance at the entire Beginning Workshop is obligatory. Smith named ALA President's Program Speaker at 2018 ALA Annual Conference & Exhibition Pulitzer Prize-winning author and poet Tracy K. Smith will speak from 3 p.m. - 5 pm. on Sunday, June 24, 2018, at the 2018 ALA (American Library Association) Annual Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans. Her collection "Life on Mars" won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize and was selected as a New York Times Notable Book. The Root.com has noted that Smith's fourth and just released collection of poems, "Wade in the Water," is sure to be on everyone's awards and best-of lists. http://www.ala.org/news/member-news/2018/04/tracy-k-smith-ala-presidents-pr… YALSA awarded $497,635 from IMLS to implement 'Transforming Teen Services: A Train the Trainer Approach' project The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), in partnership with the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA), will implement a new project, Transforming Teen Services: A Train the Trainer Approach from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2021. The Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) announces the next course in an exciting new series of 4-week online courses that will help you become a better leader and boost your career to a new level. “Conflict Resolution,” will be offered May 14-June 8, and will give you the knowledge, skills and strategies you need to productively work through conflict among your team members. http://www.ala.org/news/member-news/2018/04/llama-online-competency-course-… Public Library Association announces library cohort for 2018 Inclusive Internship Initiative The Public Library Association (PLA) has announced the libraries in its 2018 Inclusive Internship Initiative (III) cohort. Last summer, PLA piloted this first-of-its-kind internship program designed to present librarianship as a viable career option for the next generation of Americans. In 2017, PLA sponsored paid, mentored public library internships for 50 high school juniors and seniors at 39 host libraries across the U.S., including two tribal libraries and sites in Alaska and Hawaii. For 2018, PLA is proud to offer this opportunity to 50 libraries, with support from IMLS’ grant RE-00-17-0129-17. Each participating library will recruit an intern who, with individual guidance from a mentor, will engage with multiple facets of library life this summer. To highlight the shift in media focus the committee has concentrated on apps for this year’s selections. Future lists will include a diverse array of digital media for children up to age 14, including websites and video streaming. The 2018 Notable Children’s Digital Media committee has selected 15 apps that span diverse subjects from mindfulness to math.
