*EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNTIY:* *Position: Support Services Supervisor, Permanent Part-time* *Job Duties:* · Assists Department Head in supervising the Support Services Department and staff and in developing policies and procedures; assists with hiring, training and supervising of Clerks and Shelvers, including staff evaluations, scheduling, and timecards. Schedules and maintains appropriate staffing levels within Support Services. · Performs all duties assigned in the ILS Module accurately and efficiently; problem solves patron and catalog issues; assists staff with problem solving; assists Library patrons while employing the Library’s and City of Novi’s customer service principles. · Performs workroom duties and other tasks as assigned, including sorting and loading carts for shelving; shelving of materials; shelf reading; processing holds, returns, and other materials from delivery; material processing and maintenance; troubleshooting and maintenance operations of the AST System; and registering cash, check, and credit card transactions. · Adapts and responds to multiple priorities, interruptions and demands; communicates effectively with patrons, co-workers, and professional colleagues; resolves problem situations and collaborates across departments in a positive manner. · Retains knowledge and stays up-to-date on current Library policies and procedures. · Responsible for the overall orderliness of the Library’s collections, display areas, and department areas. Supervises the opening and closing procedures for the Support Services Department. · Seeks professional continuing education, both organized and casual, with an air toward keeping services current and appropriate for the patrons. · Assists, as assigned, with department volunteers; ordering of supplies and managing budget; processing mail; monitoring and posting information on public bulletin boards; making public address announcements as needed. · Assists, as assigned, to supervise and perform Outreach Service duties. Holiday Cookie Exchange or Swap Program

Has anyone ever had a successful one at their library for patrons? What were the pros and cons? I would like to do one but am having trouble wrapping my brain around it. Here are my thoughts: Invite patrons and have them register beforehand so we will know how many cookies they will need to bring (and so there is not duplicate cookies). If we set the limit to 24, then they would bring 4 dozen cookies. Two dozen will be for tasting and the other two would be for take home. After the tasting is done, they would be allowed to take home one cookie from each maker along with the recipe. They would essentially bring home 2 dozen cookies. (If my math is correct). We could also have people tell a bit about why they chose that particular cookie to make and if there is some tradition or meaning behind it. We could also vote for your favorite at the same time. Lots of possibilities but my main struggle is the exchange itself. Does that make sense? Or do you have any suggestions? I am looking for quick and easy but fun as well. The required minimum qualifications are: Education and Experience Bachelor's degree from an accredited college OR a combination equivalent of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills for this position. At least 1 year of satisfactory relevant experience in a library. At least 1 year satisfactory supervisory experience. Knowledge of basic bookkeeping practices, with sufficient skill to complete reconciliations and deposits. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with the public and staff. Ability to perform basic supervisory functions and organize workflow. Thorough knowledge of library circulation methods and procedures. Ability to create and maintain positive and effective public relations. Historical Society of Michigan 5815 Executive Dr. Lansing, MI 48911 Contact: Nancy Feldbush (517) 324-1828 <mailto:feldbush@hsmichigan.org> feldbush(a)hsmichigan.org For Immediate Release Two Michigan teachers selected to compete for coveted national award LANSING, Mich.-From the scores of educators who participated in Michigan History DayR (National History Day in Michigan), the Historical Society of Michigan, administrator of the program, has selected two teachers to vie for the Harris History Teacher of the Year award during the National History Day competitions, which take place in College Park, Maryland, June 10-14, 2018. Jennifer Gradowski of Christa McAuliffe Middle School in Bay City was chosen for the junior division, and John Beck of Heritage Christian Academy in Kalamazoo was selected for the senior division. The Harris History Teacher of the Year award is sponsored by James F. Harris and awarded to one middle school and one high school teacher annually. The two national winners will be announced on June 14. To be selected to compete for the teacher of the year award, an educator must demonstrate a commitment to engaging students in historical learning through innovative use of primary sources, implementation of active learning strategies to foster historical thinking skills, and participation in the National History Day Contest. A team of teachers and historians choose the two national winners, who will receive $5,000 each in addition to the coveted title of teacher of the year. The History Day program offers a fascinating opportunity to move beyond routine learning. Based on an annual theme, students choose to explore and research a local, national or international historical topic. The theme for 2018 is Conflict & Compromise in History. Michigan's 59 student state finalists will present their work in one of five categories-performances, exhibits, papers, websites and documentaries-at the National History Day competition.
