Hi Nicole, Our Easy Readers are alphabetical by the first three letters of the author's last name, with some exceptions for series (all Disney, Marvel, Barbie, DC Books are shelved under the larger umbrella title, for example). Each book has a colored dot at the top of the spine - we have four levels to help patrons pinpoint difficulty. I put those on myself and we use ¼" dots so they don't take up much spine space, but the bright colors are still distinct. This seems to be working fairly well for us. Circulation for this collection is relatively high and we've gotten good feedback from patrons and staff about the dotted levels. The biggest challenges are keeping track of the series that are shelved by title to make sure they get the right spine label, and physically getting the dots on the books. Nicole, Your question is one that I have been curious about as well. I formerly worked at the Brighton District Library and was charged with the Easy Reader Collection. At BDL, we had a colored dot level system with a legend explaining the system. Parents used the legend to understand the dot system. This was in place when I took it over and to my knowledge it is still working effectively. I currently work at the Salem-South Lyon Library and there system is a bit different. They follow the publishers levels and put the level number on the spine label. I have added an explanation sheet to this system to clarify for parents what each level number means. In both libraries, I find the biggest problem to be the different ways that the publishers determine they level of the book. A level one in Ready to Read is not the same as a Level one in World of Reading. That is part of the reason in both libraries I created an explanation legend/sheet for parents. Hold Shelf Privacy

I’m asking fellow libraries whether or not you keep your patrons’ available holds behind a checkout desk or in a self-serve fashion, out on the floor. If the latter is the case, to what lengths does your staff go to ensure their privacy? Further, are self-serve hold shelves at all a breach of privacy? Thoughts and opinions welcome. The Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) is looking for an energetic, creative individual to join our team as the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) Engagement Specialist, Public Libraries. This is a new position and is an extension of existing MeL teams at MCLS and the Library of Michigan. You will be responsible for developing training and support materials in a range of formats as well as promoting use of MeL through education and engagement programs. You will build and maintain strong relationships with public librarians, paraprofessionals, and library administrators through regular communication and visits. This position requires a bachelor’s degree in education, instructional design or technology, or education technology, or a Master of Library & Information Science. The best candidate will have a minimum of 3 years training/instructional experience as well as experience developing learning programs for both live and virtual environments. This job requires significant travel to libraries and conferences around Michigan. You must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license. Telecommuting will be an option.
