Donations
by Hartford Public Library 26 Apr '19

26 Apr '19

Dear Library Directors, I am inquiring as to donations for capital campaigns. Did you have a sliding scale such as over $1,000, $500, $250. How did you acknowledge donations, plaque on the wall, etc. We are starting a campaign to raise $300,000 to finish our library. We have one major donor that has committed for $1.3 million and I have an NEH Grant for $400,000. The rest of the money needs to come from a capital campaign. Could you share you experience. It is most appreciated. Regards,Stephanie DanielsDirectorHartford Public Library

Free Content and Webinars from WebJunction
by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 26 Apr '19

26 Apr '19

Greetings! Did you know that you can access hundreds of free webinars, online courses and featured content at WebJunction.org? WebJunction is brought to Michigan library staff free of charge by the Library of Michigan and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Highlighted Content on WebJunction * New Tools for Getting Beyond the Survey to Discover Your Community Needs<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webju…>: The most common approach to assessing community needs is to conduct a survey. Surveys have their strengths; they cast a wide net, get distributed electronically or on paper, and collect quantitative data that can be filtered and parsed. However, surveys are not necessarily the best tool to reveal the heart and aspirations of the community. The biggest drawback is that they are impersonal. Community discovery is not intended to arrive at a statistically significant, quantifiable representation of your community. It is a process to build connection and conversation between the library and community members. Explore this article about tools for getting beyond the survey. * Crowdsourcing Alternatives to “There Are No Stupid Questions”<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webju…>: Libraries are a place for finding answers, but first come the questions. Whether working at the reference desk or teaching a class, you've likely had more than a handful of patrons approach you to say, "I have a stupid question." One librarian took to Twitter to find out how people respond to this statement and gathered some great suggestions. Free WebJunction Webinars for You Upcoming webinars are open for registration. If you can’t attend a live session, all WebJunction webinars are recorded and available for free in the Course Catalog: https://learn.webjunction.org/<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flearn.web…>. Is That Real? A Crash Course in Verifying Online Content Wednesday, May 22, 2019 ♦ 3:00 pm Eastern / 12:00 pm Pacific ♦ 60 minutes Registration: https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/verifying-online-content.html<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webju…> Dive into the tools and skills that you and your patrons need to verify the authenticity of user-generated content, and learn how to create engaging fact-checking investigations that will empower learners to detect and debunk misinformation online. News Literacy Project (NLP) covers topics such as developing keen observation skills that help detect images circulating in a false context; using reverse image searches to find the origins of a digital image; using webpage archivers to explore deleted or changed content; and using Google Street View to explore and confirm details of locations around the world. This webinar will help you boost your own skills and give you confidence to help patrons evaluate their sources, too. The session will also include a brief overview of NLP’s work with public libraries and strategies for adapting its resources for non-school settings. -- Kendra Morgan OCLC · Senior Program Manager, WebJunction 220 W.
