Vendors for self-checkout kiosks
by Yvonne Brown 16 May '19

16 May '19

Hello. For those libraries with a self-checkout kiosk, what vendor did you use? We have had a Bibliotheca unit since 2009. We need to upgrade, so I'm researching options. Thank you in advance for any feedback. I will compile the responses to share with the listserv. *Yvonne Brown* *Lapeer District Library* *810-664-9521 x3116www.library.lapeer.org <http://www.library.lapeer.org>*

Seeking promotional ideas for new library service
by Scott Drapalik 16 May '19

16 May '19

Hello library world! We are looking to promote a service in which a patron may place a hold from our online catalog on a physical item that is currently available in our collection. This item will then be pulled by library staff and be awaiting the patron on their next visit. Does your library do something similar to this, and if so, how have you marketed this service to your patrons? Catchy branding names appreciated. :) Thank you! Scott

elevators
by Paul McCann 16 May '19

16 May '19

Greetings everyone, Dexter District Library is coming up on the end of a contract for ongoing elevator maintenance and repairs and we are looking at options. When we constructed the building, the original service contract was with the manufacturer and had a 10 year duration. I am starting to look at options as there are some fairly specific rollover conditions in the current contract as well as some performance issues. Any input on the following would be appreciated: If you have an elevator in your building, do you use a company other than the manufacturer for continuing maintenance service and repairs? If you have used both the manufacturer and separate service company, are there any specific advantages or drawbacks to either relationship? If you created an RFP, would you be willing to share? If you did an RFP and stayed with the manufacturer, did the process help to correct and issues or make terms any more favorable for the library? Thanks in advance for your help. Best regards, Paul McCann -- Paul McCann Dexter District Library Library Director 3255 Alpine St. Phone: 734-426-4477 Dexter, MI 48130 Fax: 734-426-1217 www.dexter.lib.mi.us

Guest MeL Minute: DemoNow at the Marshall District Library
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 16 May '19

16 May '19

[A close up of text on a white background Description automatically generated]As a public librarian, I am always looking for new ways to connect to the businesses and organizations in my community. One of the most useful resources in MeL for finding information about business and market data is DemographicsNow. This free resource is easy to access and can be used in a variety of ways to support our residents. Marshall District Library has used DemographicsNow to help the organizations in our community in practical, concrete ways. A local pastor visited us to find out how he could distribute information about an upcoming conference his church was hosting. He wanted to send invitations to all of the churches of certain denominations that were located in a 30-mile radius of Marshall. Because DemographicsNow allows users to use their Geography Menu to Create Locations, we were able to use his church address to set a radius and the SIC group search to find the contact information. MDL works regularly with our Economic Development Alliance and Chamber of Commerce to support business services in our community. On several occasions, our local officials have called the library to get lists of businesses that meet certain criteria. For example, a company that was moving into the manufacturing district in the Marshall area needed a list of Michigan companies that constructed industrial warehouses and had a large worker capacity. In using the keyword search for NAICS/SIC groups, it was simple to pull up a list and sort the companies by number of employees. At one point, the Economic Development Alliance also contacted us as a local business owner was looking to add another store location outside of our county. Using the Reports function of DemographicsNow, we were able to show this business owner statistics about the spending habits of people in the areas she was considering in order to help her make an informed decision. DemographicsNow also works great for personal projects, particularly in finding obscure phone numbers or businesses. You never know when someone might come in and need to track down a manufacturer of doll wigs so that they can produce their own doll design. When someone came into MDL and asked for that information, I had a good idea of where to start my search. DemographicsNow is a powerful research tool for finding statistical information, business listings, residential phone numbers, and many other treasures for our patrons. If You Promote It, They (Creative License Taken As The Quote Is Really He) Will Come: Michigan Activity Pass: 19 New Destinations!
by Jim Flury 15 May '19

15 May '19

Good Afternoon, Last Saturday night I was at a baseball game with one of my brothers in law. There is nothing remarkable in that, as he and I have attended an average of one Saturday night baseball game per month for as long as we have been brothers in law, which is a long time now. As we sat freezing and eating our tasty albeit overpriced hot dogs in the largely empty stadium, a foul ball was hit very hard, very close to our vicinity. Too close. Fortunately, the baseball crashed into the empty row of seats directly in front of us. So all I had to do was walk to that empty row of seats, and pick up the ball. I wanted to give the ball to a little kid. But there were no little kids nearby, and my brother in law is older than I am. So I kept the ball, the first souvenir in all the many games we have attended together. While contemplating the ball, and our good fortune that neither of us were struck in the head by it, and that neither of us had choked on our expensive hot dogs, I started thinking about Kevin Costner. Yes, that movie. The fact that some of the defense played on the diamond that night looked as if the infielders were Shoeless probably was a contributing factor in my thought processes, too. As many of you are aware, one year ago TLN migrated to a new integrated library system. For TLN staff this meant a great deal of training, many phone call consultations, data conversion, meetings and the like. All of this started well in advance of the May 29, 2018 go live with the new ils. So we had no time to devote to the recruitment of new partner destinations for the Michigan Activity Pass program last year. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, as we have a lot of really great partner destinations already. But to my way of thinking, it is nice to give patrons something new, and libraries something new to promote to patrons. Fast forward one year, and we are still learning new things about our ils. But with the steepest part of the learning curve mostly behind us, we did have some time to turn to MAP recruitment again. Thus to the subject of this message: If you promote it, they will come, to the tune of, as I am typing these lines, a total of 19 brand new partner destinations for the Michigan Activity Pass program for this year! In addition, we have a verbal commitment from a well-known Detroit metro area destination to join MAP at the end of summer. And I expect additional MAP partner destinations to get on board prior to the renewal of the program on May 24, 2019. Without further adieu, here in no particular order are our 19 confirmed new MAP partner destinations! The public neither knows, nor cares, what a library cooperative is, or does. But time and again public libraries are given high marks as being one of the most, if not the most, trusted and respected institutions in local communities. As that is the case we hope libraries will work to promote MAP by including a link to the site on their homepage [ http://www.plymouthrockets.com/michiganactivitypass/ | http://www.plymouthrockets.com/michiganactivitypass/ ] by including references to the MAP Facebook page, which now has in excess of 7,000 likes [ https://www.facebook.com/MIActivityPass/ | https://www.facebook.com/MIActivityPass/ ] by printing the bookmarks, brochures and posters that are available at the MAP promotional page [ https://tln.lib.mi.us/map/ | https://tln.lib.mi.us/map/ ] by telling your local media outlets about MAP, and by spreading the word about the benefits of the Michigan Activity Pass to potential partner destinations in your community. Let's work together to make this, the 12th season of MAP, 2019-2020, a HOME RUN! Thank you for your support and promotion of the Michigan Activity Pass program. Sincerely, Jim F.
