by Jan Davidson 20 Jun '19

20 Jun '19

We are pleased to announce that MCLS, in partnership with the Library of Michigan, will be bringing facilitators from the National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation (NCDD) to Michigan this August. We will be forming three cohorts of Michigan library staff who would like to learn a new method of engaging their communities, and be part of a cohort of peer support and coaching calls. The one-day trainings will take place in three locations around the state on the week of August 5, 2019. Continuing support will take place via six months of monthly coaching conference calls and ongoing online peer support. These cohorts are open to all Michigan library staff. They will be most effective for those who are working on community engagement in and through their libraries, or who want to learn a new method of doing so. These trainings are highly subsidized by the Library of Michigan, so all of this - full-day training, lunch and snack, materials, and ongoing support - is available to you for only $40! Registration<https://www.mcls.org/training-events/events/conversation-cafe/> is open! Don't miss your chance - register today! Earth Friendly Question
by Trista Reno 19 Jun '19

Hello, I was wondering what other libraries use for tablecloths during messy youth and teen programs? We currently use plastic and I would like to move toward something more earth-friendly. Hello all; We decided to have Longway Planetarium come here after we did the NASA training. First time for us ever actually finding the money to be able to do this. It was wonderful, we had two programs today with over 60 kids. Laurie was wonderful and the kids didn't want to leave the library...If you have the money and time she is worth every penny.... Library space rental question
by Kat Boyer 19 Jun '19

19 Jun '19

Hello all, We, like many libraries, have a space that can be rented for outside use. Right now the rental agreement allows for the space, use of tables and chairs, podium, and use of the kitchen that is attached to the space. We have had people ask about using our projector, but as of now have not allowed that. I'm thinking of reworking our room rental policy to include use of things like microphones or the projector, and I wanted to get feedback from other libraries. If you allow for us of these items, do you charge? If so, how much do you charge and how do you make sure items are in working condition both before and after? Jehovah's Witnesses question
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 19 Jun '19

19 Jun '19

Greetings: While Public Libraries are not generally located in Federal buildings, Michigan public libraries are government entities and , like all US Public libraries, are considered "Limited Public Forums" for purposes of First Amendment activity. This means that while public libraries are not considered as open as , say, public sidewalks or parks, there is a right of the public to exercise their first amendment rights at public libraries - with certain caveats. Dave Ewick's answer earlier was correct. Jehovah's witnesses and other groups that wish to pamphlet, protest, petition, etc., do have a right to do so on Library property or sidewalks. In fact, a 1946 US Supreme Court case further supports this with respect to Jehovah's Witnesses and religious groups: Marsh v. Alabama 326 US 501(1946) HOWEVER, as a limited public forum, libraries can determine "Time, Place and Manner," which means that a library may impose reasonable restrictions on the activities of these groups. For example, the group can be asked to remain away from entrances and exits (so as to not block them or inhibit egress), they can be asked to prohibit any activity that inhibits the ability of the library to maintain its normal operations, or that prevents patrons from enjoying the library. The ACLU of Michigan has a great sheet on this topic: https://www.aclumich.org/sites/default/files/field_documents/knowyourrights…<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aclum…> Thanks! Jehovah's Witnesses and Free Speech Zone
by kwilliams＠hartpubliclibrary.org 19 Jun '19

19 Jun '19

Has anyone had JWs come and ask if they could put a cart of literature on library grounds? The two very nice people who spoke to me this morning told me I HAD to allow it because all Federal Buildings are Free Speech Zones. Is this true? Has anyone else had this question? Thank you, Kay Williams Library Director Hart Area Public Library
