Fun program idea - Beautifully Wrapped - Head wrapping workshop and exhibit
by Kelly Rembert 27 Jun '19

27 Jun '19

Hi, I wanted to let everyone know about a fun program and exhibit. Zarinah El-Amin Naeem is the owner of Beautifully Wrapped and she will come to your library and do a head wrapping workshop and demonstration. It is a fun program that we've had 3 times over the years and it keeps growing! We had 200 people come and everyone loved it. Zarinah will demonstrate a couple of different head wrapping styles from different cultures around the world on audience members, she tells the story of its origins and its significance and at the end of the program she has wraps for the audience to try it themselves. It is a great program for moms and daughters, red hatters, girls night out. The audience ends up being mostly women but the men in the audience enjoy it as well and Zarinah wrapped a gentleman in a turban at the last program. She also has an exhibit that she can bring to the program and/or display it at your library. We used it to build up excitement prior to the program. Her contact information is: Zarinah El-Amin Naeem, M.A. Founder of Beautifully Wrapped https://www.facebook.com/Headwraps Cell: 313-377-2857 ( tel:3133772857) Email: zarinah(a)niyah.net I've attached some pictures I took of the exhibit and the head wrapping workshop. Thanks, Kelly Kelly Ireland Rembert Outreach Librarian Southfield Public Library 26300 Evergreen Rd. Southfield, MI 48076 (248) 796-4367 krembert(a)southfieldlibrary.org www.southfieldlibrary.org

Staff Communication Ideas
by Rob Bristow 27 Jun '19

27 Jun '19

Good Afternoon, We are in the process of constructing a new library and will be moving from a very open 1-floor building where staff can easily find each other to a 2-floor building where we will be more spread out. Just wondering how other libraries handle communicating in larger spaces. We will, of course, have phones at staff workstations but wondering about when staff are wandering through the stacks and we are sending a patron their way for assistance. We don’t really want to go old-school with pagers and we don’t really want to look like switchboard operators with big headsets either but not sure what other options are out there😊 Thanks for any ideas you have and are willing to share! MeL Minute: Full set of colorful, new web buttons
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 27 Jun '19

27 Jun '19

[A close up of text on a white background Description automatically generated]We heard you, Michigan! We know that many libraries used the graphics from the "old" MeL site on their own webpages. Did you catch that we posted a full set of colorful, new web buttons to MeL.org that you can use going forward? What's more, we even provide the code to make it easy. Check out how great it can look on Cadillac Wexford Public Library's<https://www.cadillaclibrary.org/eshelf-research> page. They've broken up resources by subject area with headers and included short descriptions of the eResources. And here's an example of a Kids page of MeL eResources from the White Lake Community Library<https://www.wlclib.org/children/homework-help>. Where can you get the code? On MeL of course! Visit the Library Staff section and click on eResources Web Buttons<https://mel.org/library-staff/marketing-resources/eresource-web-buttons>. You'll have the option of either geo-IP URLs or Direct URLs. If the difference is still a little confusing, you can read more about it on MeL by following the path from Library Staff to either Direct URLs<https://mel.org/library-staff/operations/direct-urls> or Geo-IP URLs<https://mel.org/library-staff/operations/geo-ip-urls>. If you still have questions, visit the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services eResources Help page<https://www.mcls.org/mel/mel-databases/help/>, or contact the MeL Help Desk at meldatabaseshelp(a)mcls.org. We are continually working to improve the experience that Michigan library staff have with the MeL website, MeLCat, and the individual eResources. This year we have made the new MeL web buttons available and improved the functionality of the Educators and eResources sections. Coming soon, you'll see a new set of promotional videos that we've created and members of the MeL team are going to Ipswitch, MA to work directly with EBSCO staff. Thank you for allowing us to serve you. Library Narcan Bills
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 27 Jun '19

27 Jun '19

Yesterday, Governor Whitmer signed HB 4367 (http://legislature.mi.gov/doc.aspx?2019-HB-4367) and SB 200 (http://legislature.mi.gov/doc.aspx?2019-SB-0200) These laws provide Michigan public libraries (and all Michigan government entities) with the ability to obtain and administer Narcan without fear of liability. The Library of Michigan would like to thank MLA, Gail Madziar, and the MDE Legislative liaisons, Caroline Liethen and Stephen DeGrow for all of their efforts on these bills. The Library of Michigan is preparing a detailed explanation of the new legislation and how Public Libraries can comply with the new law. Watch for this on MichLib-L in the coming days. As always, please contact membielac(a)michigan.gov with any questions!

The American West is part of our American heritage, from Horace Greeley's admonition "Go West, Young Man" to the TV westerns of our youth. Our nine-day, eight-night tour explores historic sites in Missouri and Kansas: the Gateway to the West. Join us for the four-day, three-night America's Architect: Frank Lloyd Wright Tour from August 17-20, 2019, as we explore the life of Frank Lloyd Wright, a brilliant architect and a problematic personality. Controversy, scandal, and even murder swirled through his life. He designed buildings that have become World Heritage Sites, created new architectural styles, and integrated his structures with the surrounding landscape. He also undercut his first employer; made impossible demands on builders; left his wife for a married woman; and suffered the loss of his wife, friends, and home in an arson-murder. Wright's biography is more astounding than fiction-and we'll experience the whole story on our tour. <https://hsmichigan.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/FrankLloydWright_Itinerar y.pdf> See the full tour itinerary. <http://hsmichigan.org/programs/michiganders-on-the-road/frank-lloyd-wright- registration/> Register online for this tour. <https://hsmichigan.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/FrankLloydWright_Registra tion.pdf> Download the registration form. $799* *Includes motor coach transportation; all lodging; all dinners and breakfasts; some lunches; and all admission fees, taxes, and gratuities.
