Lynda.com/LinkedIn Learning alternatives
by Phil Skeltis 13 Aug '19

13 Aug '19

Like many libraries, we were surprised to learn that Lynda.com's change to LinkedIn Learning would bring changes to authentication and that patrons will soon be compelled to create LinkedIn profiles in order to use the product. We are still considering our response but, in the meantime, I am wondering - do any other libraries subscribe to electronic resources similar to Lynda.com that they could recommend? We subscribe to Gale Courses and Learning Express Library, but I'm curious to know if anyone has any other recommendations for instructional video products. Thanks! *Groan* yes, I did indeed dare to say those 2 words in August: "Summer Reading!" 2020's Imagine Your Story will be here before you know it (manuals out by October), so come November you can get a jump start on all your planning and ideas for next year. Not to mention, it's a great opportunity to receive training from Will Stuck<https://www.willstuck.com/keynote-speaking>, not to mention dipping your toes in the land of virtual reality and how to best bring VR programming to your library. Feedback Requested: Turning off wireless nightly
by Stanczak, Cindy 12 Aug '19

12 Aug '19

Hello all, First, I apologize for the duplicate posting, but I'm hoping to get as much feedback as possible. *The question:* We're seeing a sudden, dramatic increase of late-night, early-morning drug abuse around our building, encouraged, it seems, by availability of our wireless internet access. We have a lot of third-shift factory workers in our area, so we've always kept it on and available, but this is public safety issue. We've added locks on our exterior electrical sockets, and we're considering the option of scheduled our wireless to go down nightly, at least midnight-6am. Please let me know your thoughts. Do you turn your wireless off? What was the response from the community? If not, have you thought about it? What informed your decision. Thank you! *Cynthia Stanczak* Library Director Albion District Library 501 S. Superior St. Albion, MI 49224 (517) 629-3993 Albion District Library: Transforming Minds, Changing Lives. Re: [Michlib-l] 1000 Books Before Kindergarten
by Kaitlin Matesich 12 Aug '19

12 Aug '19

Thank you to everyone who shared their program with me, this goes leaps and bounds towards getting our 1k before K program up and running. While many libraries vary from program to program common threads though out included: -Rewarding families with a small prize (dollar store, books, bubbles, ect.) through out the program (every 100 books or at milestones 100, 250,500) - a certificate of completion at the end with a larger prize: dedicate a book, group party or some form of acknowledgement of their accomplishment -Having paper logs (typically an in-house creation) available, tracking 50-100 books at a time - Most libraries seem to track the count of books and not the title - Having a brochure or orientation packet for parents. We have some absolute rock stars in Youth and Children's services. You all are amazing! -- Kaitlin Matesich Youth Services Coordinator Benzie Shores District Library
