The Alliance meetings take place in the morning and consist of a networking session and a featured speaker. Attendance at a Michigan History Alliance meeting is FREE of charge for current member organizations of HSM. The networking and collaboration portion allows for conversations among a region's historical organizations, and the speaker will offer further insights on a topic of concern or opportunity. Attendance at a Michigan History Alliance meeting is FREE of charge for current member organizations of HSM. Since the Alliance is a benefit for HSM member organizations, membership is required for participation. Attendees must represent a member historical organization in order to attend the Alliance meeting in the morning. The afternoon workshops are open to ALL! There is a fee to attend the History Skills Workshops. To further the educational experience of the Alliance meetings, a separate three-hour History Skills Workshop will be offered in the afternoon. Taught by authorities in the field, the History Skills Workshops provide in-depth training on such topics as exhibit design, collections management, fundraising and websites. There is a fee to attend the History Skills Workshops, which are open to members and nonmembers alike. LSTA Public Library Services grant awards announced

The Library of Michigan is pleased to announce the 2019 Public Library Services grant awards. The grant program, now in its third year and made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, provides materials for a program done in the summer. 92 public libraries in Michigan have received total funding of $153,554 at levels of $500 to $2,000 each this year. Grant recipients across the state have a wide range of creative ideas for using their grants, and Michigan's youth are the beneficiaries. Among the programs these grants will fund include: * teens may participate in an arts and ecology program on Rabbit Island through the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton; * teens and "tweens" statewide can learn coding through various robotics activities; and * Southfield Public Library will offer space-science programming based on the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Please see information below about scholarships to attend the Association of Rural and Small Libraries, ARSL, Annual Conference in Vermont this fall. One of these scholarships is available to a LIS student and others are available to ARSL members in good standing. If you have questions, please contact the ARSL member listed below. Hello everyone! It has been a couple weeks since applications for the 2019 ARSL Fall Conference Scholarships, provided by ARSL, opened so I just wanted to send a reminder that it isn't too late to apply. These four seats are saved for the scholarship winners so they are not affected by the fact that general registration is full. Follow this link to the ARSL website to get to the applications: https://arsl.info/2019-conference-news/arsl-scholarships/ Click on the name of the scholarship you are interested in to get to the application form itself. Each has different criteria so make sure you apply for the one(s) that fits you. These scholarships are for first time attendees so anyone who has NOT previously attended an ARSL conference is invited to apply. This year, four scholarships will be awarded by ARSL. * The Dr. Bernard Vavrek scholarship is for current part-time or full-time students taking Library and Information Science classes. * The Founders scholarship is for current ARSL members who have been working in the library profession for 5 years or less. * The Ken Davenport Scholarship is for current ARSL members who have been working in the library profession for 6 to 10 years. * The Angel scholarship is open to current ARSL members who have been working in the library profession for any length of time. Traverse Area District Library Selected to Host Amateur Radio Contact with ISS

News Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Traverse Area District Library Selected to Host Amateur Radio Contact with the International Space Station. April 24, 2019 (Traverse City) - The Traverse Area District Library (TADL) is pleased to announce their selection by the ARISS-US Team (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station) to host an amateur radio contact with International Space Station (ISS) crew members using the ARISS equipment on the ISS. This is a once in a lifetime experience made possible by the Amateur Radio community in cooperation with NASA. While planning for the 2019 Summer Reading Club program last fall, TADL staff and administrators learned about the opportunity to submit a proposal to make radio contact with the ISS which aligned with this year’s reading program theme: A Universe of Stories. The TADL Summer Reading Club program is open to readers of all ages, infants to adults, and begins on June 17, 2019. Proposals were submitted in late November 2018. A review team of teachers from the ARISS-US Education Committee selected proposals and TADL was among the thirteen schools or organizations, announced in early February 2019 <http://www.ariss.org/press-releases/february-5-2019>, to advance to the next stage of planning to host amateur radio contacts from July to December 2019. The final stage of planning was approved by ARISS in late March. TADL is preliminarily scheduled to host the radio contact at the Main Library (Traverse City) location during the last week of June 24-30, 2019. Considering orbital constraints and ISS crew schedules, the final date and time of the radio contact will not be confirmed by NASA until one week ahead of the contact week. The radio contact will be approximately 10 minutes in length due to the radio communication window permitted by the logistics of orbital passes of the ISS. The radio contact will be supported by TADL Information Technology staff, members of the local Cherryland Amateur Radio Club (CARC), and ARISS mentors. In preparation for the radio contact with the crew on the ISS, TADL is holding an “Ask an Astronaut” contest. Children, teens, and adults are invited to submit an entry form indicating what question they would like to ask an astronaut and why they want to ask that question. Questions should focus on applying science, technology, engineering and math in space research. Submissions begin on Monday, May 6 and close on May 22. The top questions, as selected by library staff, will be announced in late May. Students will be selected to interact directly with astronauts and cosmonauts during the radio communication window using a question and answer format at the June event.
