Any of my staff (including myself) can wear jeans as long as they are in good condition. No Tshirts unless they are part of programming, but jeans are acceptable. Policy for patrons requesting items from libraries NOT in MEL

Greetings everyone -- I'm wondering if any of you have a policy for requests for items from special libraries or out of state libraries. We rarely have such requests, but we've had one patron lately who wants quite a bit of material from non-MEL participating libraries and out of state libraries. I am not inclined to pay to join WorldCat because, again, we rarely get such requests. We have tried to work with this patron on expectations regarding a) how long it will take to receive items that we have to request directly from these institutions and b) up front fees that may be involved with these requests....but I think we need something with a little more authority behind it. I hate setting policy for the exceptions...but in this instance it wouldn't hurt to get something in place for this patron (and any future such requests). So, if any of you have any sample policies you'd be willing to share with me, I'd appreciate it. [MDE Logo] Press Release Contact: Martin Ackley, Director of Public and Governmental Affairs, 517-241-4395 Bill DiSessa, Spokesperson, 517-335-6649 Owen Intermediate School Wins 2019-20 Model 21st Century School Library Award June 5, 2019 LANSING - The Library of Michigan today announced that, for its innovative collaborations with local educators, the Owen Intermediate School Library Media Center in the Van Buren Public Schools district has won the state's 2019-20 Model 21st Century School Library (SL 21) Award. "The Owen Intermediate School Library Media Center makes use of many resources for a variety of productive collaborations with Language Arts and Social Studies educators in grades five and six," State Librarian Randy Riley said, "and, the library's focus on bringing primary sources to life helped to award it this honor." Riley said that, for instance, school library media specialist Jonathan Richards has done impersonations of historic and mythical figures as part of collaborative Social Studies lessons about Cristopher Columbus and Hades; and, for literature lessons based on Chinese American author Lawrence Yee, Richards introduced students to a collection of Chinese art and currency to broaden their experience of the novel Dragonwings. Riley commended Richards and Principal Melissa Lloyd for providing such quality immersive learning experiences to students in Van Buren Public Schools, located in Belleville. "Learning deeply about people through artifacts, art, and literature helps students understand the world around them. Owen Intermediate School strives to give that high-level experience to its students," he said. The Model SL 21 program recognizes particularly high-quality school libraries and library media specialists; and promotes the development of similar initiatives in other schools. The Owen Intermediate School Library Media Center holds Exemplary status in the SL 21 program through March 2020. The Ferndale Area District Library has an opening for a part-time Librarian. The position details are attached. Please excuse cross-postings. FADL is a Class IV library serving a population of around 20,000 in Ferndale, MI. We are looking for a well-rounded librarian who can work the service desks in both the adult and youth areas. Our main need is for weekend coverage, and we want someone who can work independently and be a leader for other staff, functioning as the person in charge in the absence of a supervisor. FADL is open 7 days a week and we want patrons to receive the same excellent customer service regardless of what day of the week they visit. We provide continuing education and development opportunities to our staff so that they may grow and be successful in their career path. Free Smart Board

I have a smart board to give away. This was in used condition when my library got it and it was working at the time it went into storage over a year ago. It has not been used since, so I am not sure if it is still working. There is one corner that is loose but as far as I know everything is there. Dimensions of smart board are 5 ft. wide by 4 ft. tall (7 ft including stand). You would need to arrange for transport. Meet a Muslim program

Hi all-- We're really pleased to be offering this program with Imam Shamshad A. Nasir, the regional missionary of Midwest US for the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Lapeer is not exactly a diverse community and so giving people the opportunity to learn from this man in our meeting room is a huge benefit to the community, I believe. Alas, others in Lapeer do not share my view. I've talked to Erin at Caro, where the Imam spoke last year, and am asking others to let me know if you've had him speak. I just want to have information about how many libraries he's visited. I hope that some of them are small and rural, as Lapeer is. Thanks so much. melissa -- Melissa A. Best Practices Guidelines for Michlib-l

Greetings Michigan Library Community, This is a best practices update for posting to Michlib-l. We welcome your participation on Michlib-l. There are a few guidelines that help improve the experience for everyone: 1. If you ask for group input on a topic, offer to collect the responses and then re-post them to the list so everyone can benefit. Be sure to embed those responses in the body of your message. 2. Please keep in mind when composing your messages that attachments are removed from posts for digest subscribers and in the archives. For maximum reach, embed the text you wish readers to see in the body of your message. If an attachment is especially important for its images, formatting or other reasons, upload it to your website and then link to it in your message to Michlib-l. 3. Do not post replies that are meant for one person to the entire list. You can accomplish this by using the "Reply" feature and not "Reply All." And, of course, a little patience goes a long way. We've all accidentally posted something to a list that was only meant for one person so gentleness with each other is helpful as well.
