MeL Minute: OVIC Is Getting a Facelift

Later this summer, you'll notice both visual and functional changes to the OViC environment. The primary goal of these updates is to work toward improved accessibility. Visual Accessibility * New page colors to improve visual accessibility * Text size options are included on each page * Header size is reduced to allow for more content on the screen view and to improve the mobile view * Branding will appear on each page in the upper header Improved Tools * Tool bar changes; tool bars will begin appearing on every page for greater ease of use and to allow for expanded article content in the first screen on mobile devices * Explorer will be more visible on the right side of the screen, making it easier for users to find more resources on similar topics * Expanded visibility for Author, Content and Source information for each article When the change happens later this summer, the direct URL page on MeL.org<https://mel.org/welcome> will be updated with a new URL. No changes will be made to our geo-IP URL and there will be no changes to content or existing links at the article or page level. Stevens Puppets

Dear Directors, I recommend the show "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" performed by Steven's Puppets. It was incredible and awesome! Their new marionettes that are fantastic. Their new adaptation of the story brings us right into the 21st century. The setting for the story is Alaska which is outstanding and truly creative. Library as "Cooling Center"

Hail, the Great Brain! I apologize for any cross-posting. In the last several years, I've been slowly developing procedures related to the library serving as warming center and also cooling center. I'm happy to share what I've developed, but I'd love to see what you might have in place? When do you offer ice water or other cooling refreshment? When do you add programming and for who (kids only or multi-generational)? When do you extend hours? When do you open on regularly closed days? When do you okay overtime (if ever)? Because there will hopefully be responses and/or discussion from multiple states, so that we have some idea for comparison, please include: - your official service population and/or number of staff, AND - whether you are consider urban, suburban, rural, or (my category) super rural/tiny library. Note: For those of you in very warm climates, please note that we are in Michigan, so our definition of "hot" and "very hot" is relative. Daily high temperatures in July are around 82°F, rarely falling below 73°F or exceeding 91°F. Special Needs Programming

Hi all, We've had several requests of late for adults with special needs attending children's programming. Some programming seems to be fine for adults to participate, while with other programs its a bit difficult. Just wondering if you've encountered this situation and how you handle it? Do you allow adults with special needs to attend children's programs? Have you set some programs with strict age and or target audience participants only? Have you developed special programming targeted at special needs adults? So far we've handled each situation on the fly. Howdy, Michiganders! *ARE YOU READY TO TAKE YOUR LIBRARY TO THE NEXT LEVEL?* The Library of Michigan and the University of Michigan School of Information, with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, is delighted to announce that applications are open for the 2019-2020 Small and Rural Library Leadership Academy. *JOIN US! *If you’re a library leader in a Class I – III library in Michigan who is eager to think big-picture about your library’s role in its community, we invite you to join us. We’re looking for 25 library leaders from Class I – III libraries who will gather at various locations around the state to ponder the big questions of small and rural library impact. *ACADEMY GOALS *We’ll work together on issues including identifying community needs and partners, creating summer reading programs that have more impact for less effort, strategic planning, effective practices with social media, and more. In May 2020, you’ll share what you’ve learned in a one-day conference your cohort will design and lead. Thanks to funding from the Library of Michigan and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, it is completely free to participate. Each participant’s library will receive a $2500 stipend to be used to cover a laptop, travel expenses, professional growth materials, and/or a substitute to cover for you while you are away. Additionally, each library will receive a $1000 project stipend to support a local library initiative. We believe that public libraries can and do play significant roles in their communities.
