Good Morning, I wanted to provide you with a "status report" as regards the below the --- email, which was sent September 30. People tell me that folks in the state to the south that shall remain nameless, particularly on Saturdays in the Fall, use the phrase "Holy Toledo" to express surprise when something turns out better (or at least, differently) than they expected. I can't use "Holy Toledo" here, as these are family friendly listservs :) But if I could, I probably would, as the response from libraries has been nothing short of incredible. We expected a fair number of requests from libraries for our MAP postcards. But we did not expect to receive requests from over 200 libraries! This is great! It tells us there is an overwhelming level of support from and commitment to, MAP in libraries. So, three things: 1. I have not sent individual replies, except in a couple of specific cases, to libraries that submitted requests for MAP postcards. We do have your requests, though :) 2. It will take us a bit of time to sort and ship 20,000+ MAP postcards to libraries. We will get it done. But it will take a bit of time. 3. We are still taking requests for MAP postcards, if your library is not one of the 200+ that have already sent a request. Keep 'em coming! A longtime supporter of HSM, The Meijer Foundation has been a committed ally in the Society's educational efforts to share the history and heritage of all Michigan's peoples. "Here at HSM, we are always looking for the next opportunity to make an impact and to share and promote the story of Michigan," said Executive Director and CEO Larry J. Wagenaar, who leads the 191-year-old nonprofit and nongovernmental organization. "We are very excited that our next game changer is happening right now thanks to the generosity of The Meijer Foundation." "The Meijer Foundation is honored to be a part of obtaining a new home for the Historical Society of Michigan and its programs," said Hank Meijer, one of The Meijer Foundation's trustees. "The preservation of our state's history has always been very important to our foundation, and we are proud to partner with HSM in this endeavor." Along with offices for HSM staff, meeting and storage spaces, and an expanded area for HSM's library of Michigan history books, the Meijer Center for Michigan History offers four education spaces-all with remote learning capabilities-that will allow HSM to enhance and expand its programming, which includes three annual history conferences, the yearlong Michigan History DayR program for students, History Skills WorkshopsT, History HoundsT Lecture Series, Michiganders on the RoadT motor coach history tours, the Michigan History MomentT radio program and the Michigan History AllianceT networking program. A formal dedication of the Meijer Center for Michigan History will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019, starting at 4:30 p.m. Hank Meijer, along with other dignitaries, will offer a few remarks before the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Tours of the building and hors d'oeuvres follow the dedication, which is by invitation. The evening's capstone is a presentation by Hank Meijer on Senator Arthur Vandenberg, the subject of Meijer's most recent book. The presentation is part of HSM's History Hounds Lecture Series, which explores some of Michigan's most fascinating historical facets. The Historical Society of Michigan, publisher of Michigan History and Chronicle magazines, is the state's oldest cultural organization, founded in 1828 by territorial governor Lewis Cass and explorer Henry Schoolcraft. Seed Library Summit!

In case you missed the first post, we are excited to announce the First Annual Michigan Seed Library Summit ! It will be held at the Lyon Township Public Library on October 13 , 2019 from 10 am to 3 pm. If you manage, steward, or maintain a seed library , or want to create a seed library in your community, we would love to have you join us! This is your chance to meet your fellow seed librarians in person and share your successes, challenges, and good ideas! We will have round-table discussions about the following topics: Sources for seed donations Packaging ideas, displaying, and storing seeds ( Please bring samples of your seed packets, pictures of your seed library, and anything else you feel would be of interest to other seed librarians) Improving the return rate of borrowed seeds Supporting your seed library with programming Youth outreach and programming Marketing your seed library Report from the 2019 Heirloom Expo/ Seed Library Summit in Santa Rosa, CA Well known speaker and author Ben Cohen will be in attendance, and we all value his experience helping to open seed libraries all over Michigan! Ben (aka Bevin) has written two books, the most recent of which is "Saving Our Seeds: The Practice and Philosophy." He will autograph copies to purchase if you want one for your library or yourself, and his books are also available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Ingram. Ben has promised to bring seeds to share! If you also have surplus seeds, please bring them along. You can swap with your fellow seed librarians or share with a seed library that is still getting off the ground. There is no cost for this event. If you haven't already, please email me if you are planning on attending so I can get a head count. LTPL will provide bagels, snacks, and drinks. [MDE Logo] Press Release Contact: Martin Ackley, Director of Public and Governmental Affairs, 517-241-4395 Bill Disessa, Spokesperson, 517-335-6649 Library of Michigan Hosting Exhibit on Late Michigan Author Jim Harrison October 2, 2019 LANSING - Renowned author Jim Harrison had put down stakes out West when he died in 2016, but the indelible literary legacy he left in this state lives on in a photographic exhibit opening Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the Library of Michigan (LM). Hosted by the LM and Historical Society of Greater Lansing, "Friends" is a collection of photographs by Harrison's close friend John "Bud" Schulz of St. Johns. The photographs, taken in 1971-72 at the author's Leland farm, show a youthful and exuberant Harrison with his wife, Linda, and daughters Jamie and Anna. He is seen tending to his horses and playing with his dog. Schulz struck up a lifetime friendship with Harrison at Michigan State University (MSU), which continued to the author's death in 2016. Schulz accompanied Harrison and his coterie of authors, artists, and naturalists on numerous hunting and fishing trips across North America. "Jim Harrison is one of the best writers to ever call Michigan home," State Librarian Randy Riley said. "His ability to write poetry, fiction, and essays was matched by few other authors. Hopefully this exhibit will introduce more people to his books." Also on display are: * items reflecting Harrison's life and passions, including his writing desk, walking stick, artwork, and totems; * numerous curios he collected from the natural world; and * personal letters, all 60 of his books, broadsides, manuscripts, and jottings to help interpret his work. The writer's literary assistant, Joyce Harrington Bahle, and Upper Peninsula author and friend John Smolens will make comments at the exhibit opening that focus on Harrison the individual rather than the celebrated author. Harrison's career includes more than 60 books spanning multiple genres that include poetry, fiction, essays, and collections of essays on food. His first book of poetry, Plain Song, was published in 1965 and his first work of fiction, Wolf: A False Memoir, in 1971. The book's dust jacket includes a famous photograph of Harrison against a white workhorse. Among his most recognizable work are the novels and novellas Farmer, Dalva and Legends of the Fall. His character Brown Dog, who appears in several novellas, has reached cult status, Riley said. In addition to Harrison's literary accomplishments, he wrote screenplays for numerous films including the successful Legends of the Fall starring Brad Pitt, Wolf starring Jack Nicholson, and Revenge starring Kevin Costner. Harrison died March 26, 2016 at his Patagonia, AZ home. He graduated in 1956 from Haslett High School in Michigan, where he was a member of student council, and the Bible club, along with the debate, football, and basketball teams. He graduated from MSU and co-founded Sumac, a respected literary magazine. The exhibit opens October 5 at 1 p.m. in the LM's Lake Erie Room and runs through December 31, 2019. The exhibit is free and open during regular Library hours.
