Food literacy is essential for teens to understand and learn about food in a positive way, including food skills and best food practices. Young Adult library library staff will benefit from this workshop designed to guide libraries to in turn support teens as they explore the impact of food on so many levels of their lives. Many people over the years have requested more training around food programming, so now is your chance to register! This project is made possible by grant funds from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the State of Michigan through the Library of Michigan. Resources A Child-Friendly Digital World: AAP Releases New Media Recommendations The AAP offers recommendations for families, pediatricians, clinical practitioners, educators, researchers, industry and policy makers. The statement and technical report replace prior AAP guidance on communications and media. Learn more here<https://www.healthychildren.org/English/news/Pages/creating-a-child-friendl…>. Highlight from the recommendations: For families, the AAP recommends various strategies such as creating a Family Media Plan<https://www.healthychildren.org/English/fmp/Pages/MediaPlan.aspx>, modeling healthy media habits, and employing the "5 Cs of Media Use<https://mmaap.mmsend.com/link.cfm?r=pfSuToiqakFy_1tgfC6Gxg~~&pe=zT0srj-x8o5…>," as described by the Center of Excellence on Social Media and Youth Mental Health<https://mmaap.mmsend.com/link.cfm?r=pfSuToiqakFy_1tgfC6Gxg~~&pe=cbGjuIhdw8g…>. The 5 Cs offer a framework for families to consider media in the context of their individual child; content of media; calm or self-regulation; what other activities media crowds out; and communication. Parents cannot carry the weight of digital media management on their own, Dr. Parga-Belinkie said. But they can carve out spaces that are free of digital media—in the car, in the home at dinnertime or on weekends for activities. Also important is that parents model good behavior when using their own devices. Unbanned Books Network The Unbanned Book Network from We Need Diverse Books<https://www.diversebooks.org/> <https://www.diversebooks.org/> is designed to improve literacy rates at K-12 public schools and fight book bans that have disproportionately targeted diverse voices. In 2026, we will select 20 public school classrooms located in communities heavily affected by book bans to join the Network. Details and application: https://www.diversebooks.org/programs/unbanned-book-network. Scholarship for Public Service Applications are now open for the 2026-2028 Obama-Chesky Voyager Scholarship for Public Service. The Obama Foundation is looking for current college sophomores and community college transfer students interested in pursuing a career in public service. If you are seeking a transformative leadership development and scholarship program that includes financial aid to ease the burden of college debt, an immersive work-travel experience, and access to a powerful network of mentors, then this program is for you! The application<https://www.obama.org/programs/voyager-scholarship/> <https://www.obama.org/programs/voyager-scholarship/> closes on March 17, 2026, so help to spread the word to your community. Resources/Rights under the threats of ICE
by Sophia Fiumano 29 Jan '26

29 Jan '26

Good afternoon, everyone! I had a question regarding any community resources you may have during these very scary and threatening times. What resources have you been providing to your community members who feel threatened by ICE? Do you provide handouts, have a list of go-to resources (especially local ones in Michigan), or print red cards? I want to make sure that our library is doing what they can to help connect our patrons to what they need. Even if you want to just send me a list of resources you have been referring patrons to, I can combine them into a handout for our community and also share it with this group as well. Thank you in advance, and be safe, Sophia Fiumano [cid:2abacf42-1156-4020-a3a9-4ae9cf13f5a8] Sophia Fiumano (she/her/hers) Adult Services Librarian (734) 326-6123 ext 2836 6123 Central City Parkway, Westland, MI 48185 westlandlibrary.org<http://westlandlibrary.org/>

by Quick, Shauna (MDE) 29 Jan '26

29 Jan '26

Hello! Sharing from Library Journal Vendor News Roundup<https://www.libraryjournal.com/story/news/vendor-news-roundup-december-2025…>: Microsoft has created a new program offering Windows licenses and its standard Office software suite for free to all public access computers in public libraries, following “sustained advocacy by ULC [the Urban Libraries Council], the Public Library Association, and major urban systems,” according to a ULC announcement. All libraries qualify, although the program applies only to public-access devices and does not include computers used primarily by library staff. Libraries can apply for the program here<https://nonprofits.tsi.microsoft.com/EN-US/contact-us-libraries>. The Library of Michigan cannot endorse specific vendors or brands. Libraries should contact vendors and other experts for advice and to ensure that their choice reflects the unique needs of that library.
