MiALA 2020-2021 Nominations & Elections Information
by heather＠miala.org 18 Mar '20

18 Mar '20

Forwarded on behalf of the MiALA Nominations and Elections Committee. Excuse posting to multiple lists. Please forward to anyone that may benefit from this information. *************************** <http://www.memberleap.com/message/68882597/975208225/header_MALA.jpg> Hello MiALA friends, Happy Spring! In this season of renewal, it's time to consider the possibilities for leadership and service with the Michigan Academic Library Association (MiALA). We recognize the challenges we are all facing during this unprecedented event, and MiALA will continue to serve its members - but we need your help. Leadership takes many forms in MiALA and there are many service opportunities available. Why is serving in MiALA leadership a win/win for all of us? Because service with MiALA: * Takes only a few hours of time each month; * Can count toward tenure or continuing appointment requirements at your institution; * Establishes an active professional network with colleagues from other institutions; * Promotes academic librarianship through collaboration and communication. Do you or someone you know have the dedication and enthusiasm to serve in MiALA leadership? Or someone who is newer to academic librarianship in Michigan? Or someone who is eager to enhance their leadership skills? If so, please nominate them (or yourself) to run for one of these open Board positions: * Vice President/President-Elect * Treasurer * Publicly Funded University Rep * Private College Rep * Community College Rep * Interest Group Coordination Council Representatives (Two 2-year terms and Two 1-year terms) Nominations open on April 15, 2020 and will be accepted through May 20, 2020. Newly-elected positions will begin service on July 1, 2020. Have a question about the MiALA elections? See our Election Central 2020 website for complete information, including a timeline and position descriptions: <http://www.memberleap.com/ct.php?lid=68041861&mm=123293477051> http://miala.org/election_central.php. Any other questions about the nomination or election process, please contact the Nominations & Elections Committee at <mailto:elections@miala.org> elections(a)miala.org. We look forward to receiving your nominations! FCC Waives Gift Rules for Rural Healthcare and E-Rate Programs (until Sept. 30, 2020)
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 18 Mar '20

18 Mar '20

Good news from the FCC! Commission rules prohibit entities eligible for the RHC and E-Rate programs from soliciting or accepting anything of value from a service provider participating or seeking to participate in those programs. Today's waiver will allow health care providers, schools, and libraries to accept improved capacity, Wi-Fi hotspots, networking gear, or other equipment or services to support doctors and patients, teachers and students, and librarians and patrons during the coronavirus outbreak. For example, some providers have expressed interest in providing free network upgrades for hospitals that need more robust connections to treat patients via telemedicine and free connected devices and hotspots for students who will be taking classes at home. This waiver will enable them to do such things. MSU Suspension of MeLCat Billing
by Sue Alt 18 Mar '20

18 Mar '20

March 18, 2020 Dear MeLCat Colleagues: In light of the MeLCat shutdown and many library closures, Michigan State University (MSU-ZA006), has suspended the generation of overdue notices and subsequent billing indefinitely. This includes the suspension of all new invoices and all past due invoices/notices. When this wave of Coronavirus uncertainty subsides, we will wait a generously appropriate period of time to allow MSU-ZA006 and our MeLCat Colleagues to "catch up" before we start sending invoices again. If you have received an invoice from MSU-ZA006 please set it aside. Do not pay the invoice or purchase a replacement copy until you hear from us. If you have any questions, please email lib.melcatnotice(a)msu.edu<mailto:lib.melcatnotice@msu.edu>. I will be checking the MelCat email from home and do my best to assist you in any way possible. COVID-19 Support for Partner Libraries from Gale
by Deb Biggs 18 Mar '20

18 Mar '20

At Gale, we are committed to meeting the needs of our customers and users. We recognize how hard everyone is working to rapidly respond to the changing conditions around you—considering the health and safety of your learners first, followed by a focus on continuity of curriculum—and we want to help. To support librarians and educators as they navigate a rapid shift to virtual learning and across many communities, as well as the physical closure of public and K-12 libraries and academic campuses and their libraries, we have launched a COVID-19 resource center. Everyone can immediately start using and sharing, for free: - *Resources*: Interdisciplinary, curriculum aligned resources to support online learning from pre-K through undergraduate - *Training*: Live and on-demand training materials to help partners optimize their existing resources - *Supporting Online Learning:* Professional development eBooks to help those transitioning to and strengthening virtual learning - *Expert Insights*: Authoritative Gale resources to support research on health-related topics and global issues *VISIT OUR COVID-19 RESOURCE CENTER* <http://app.learn.cengage.com/e/er?channel=eloqua&elq_mid=37099&elq_nm=20031…> [image: VISIT OUR COVID-19 RESOURCE CENTER] <http://app.learn.cengage.com/e/er?channel=eloqua&elq_mid=37099&elq_nm=20031…> *Regarding Cengage Higher Ed**:* Gale reps. cannot help directly, but a resource page <https://cengage.pmail4.com/PoliteMail/default.aspx?page=6kQDJrm3fUy686trkw8…> has been established which will help you locate your Cengage representative to enable the following resources: - *Free Access to Unlimited*: We will be providing free access to our entire catalog - all of our online learning platforms and eTexts - through Cengage Unlimited, through end of term, to any student in any class at any US college that has been impacted by COVID-19. - *Support Transition to Online*: We will complement that offering with services and resources to back up educators as they change the way they teach. - *Free Access to eBooks*: As part of our mission to help as many students as we can, we are also participating in free eBook access programs being offered by our partners VitalSource and RedShelf. If there is anything else you can think of that would be helpful during this time, please let me know and I can triage to your Gale representative if you are with a public or K12 library as I work with academic libraries. You can reach me through email, deb.tenbusch(a)cengage.com or call me at 248-699-8969. Very best regards, Deb Biggs Tenbusch Michigan Academic Library Sales Consultant Gale, a Company of Cengage

Share your FAQs
by Reed, Nyama 18 Mar '20

18 Mar '20

Hello Everyone, Now that all libraries in Milwaukee County are closed, I am working on FAQs for patrons. The usual suspects such as what to do with items already checked out, holds, when will we reopen etc are on my list. I'm also answering questions on how to access digital materials, reset a pin remotely, livestreaming storytime... What other questions have you been getting? How are you offering extra services via livestream or video? FYI, I have no staff in the building to minimize the spread of germs in-library between staff since there are active COVID-19 cases locally. So no phone answering or shelving to be done. Thanks for your help and inspiration. Have a wonderful day, Nyama Nyama Y.
