Sad News - Judith A. Doublestein, Passed Away
by Bryan J. Cloutier 11 May '20

11 May '20

Dear Colleagues and Friends: It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that our friend and colleague, Judith A. Doublestein, passed away after a short battle with cancer on Sunday, May 10, 2020. Director Emerita, Judith A. Doublestein served the Oxford Public Library from 1978 to 2007, when she retired after nearly 30 years of service. She served as Head Clerk and Assistant Director under Director Emeritus, Renwick Garypie, from 1978 to 1984 and was appointed to later serve as Oxford Public Library's fourth Library Director from 1984 to 2007. The Library witnessed significant growth and achievement under Ms. Doublestein's leadership, which included OPL's largest Capital Campaign to date-to construct a new state of the art 24,300 sq. ft. facility that was completed in 1996 and OPL has called home ever since. As a dedicated public servant, Ms. Doublestein's generosity and commitment to serve extended far beyond the walls of the public library to her work with Rotary International where she held the distinguished honor of being named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Oxford. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and a Master of Library Science Degree, both from Wayne State University in Detroit. Her legacy remains a significant part of our culture at OPL, where her exemplary commitment to public service influences what we do and who we are at the Oxford Public Library. Regards, Bryan J. Coopersville Library - LSTA grant
by OC Lavonne Marshall 11 May '20

11 May '20

Hi Karen, My library received an LSTA grant to support summer outreach this summer. Some of our plans have changed. I had an opportunity to meet with our Ottawa County partners associated with Meet Up and Eat Up which is where/how my library planned to implement most of our outreach associated with this grant. They are planning for limited gatherings. Is it okay to use the grant monies to purchase outreach materials that don't necessarily support meeting with kids and families, but be more along the lines of a giveaway bag that would include books, craft materials and library information detailing our digital resources? I am asking if we can change our plans for purchasing outreach materials? and also what kind of time frame do we have to use these materials? Has the date for implementing grant purchases been extended? Thanks. -- LaVonne Marshall Director Coopersville Area District Library 616-837-6809 coopersvillelibrary.org

Updates to MeL.org
by Breed, Liz (MDE) 11 May '20

11 May '20

Greetings! The MeL Team has been hard at work refreshing a couple of areas on the MeL.org website<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmel.org%2…>. Thank you very much to those who helped us by participating in interviews and user testing. We appreciate your time and feedback, which helped us create what we hope you'll find is an improved user experience. You'll notice right away that we gave our home page a facelift with new images and the addition of testimonials. The second area is the eResources landing page<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmel.org%2…>, which has been through significant changes and is now more intuitive to navigate. Specifically in the eResources area, you will notice the following: * Organization by audience so it's easier to find what you need. We identified a collection of eResources that specifically support public libraries and your communities. * An alphabet located below the audience tiles will help you navigate right to the specific eResource you need. * The Public Libraries<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmel.org%2…> area is organized by audience and subject. Easily find eResources for K-5 students, teens, and adults. Popular subjects have been used to organize eResources for adults. * The Career, College, Job, and Military: Test Prep<https://mel.org/libraries/public/career-college-military-prep> area in Public Libraries is organized to provide an additional access point to LearningExpress and improved findability for resources in each of these areas. * Each subject page includes an alphabet for easy navigation. Check out the Early Literacy page<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmel.org%2…> to see an example. * "Best Bets" are identified to make it easier to decide which eResource to use. You should not need to update any links that you may be using on your own websites, whether they be to individual eResources or to specific pages on MeL.org. We hope you find these updates to be helpful in your navigation and use of MeL.org. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out! RBdigital Unlimited Magazines: Easy To Change Display Order
by Jim Flury 11 May '20

11 May '20

Good Morning, Library cooperative directors, could you please share this with your member libraries. Thank you. Thanks to a suggestion from Matt Church, Director, Berkley Public Library, I have reorganized the TLN Unlimited Magazines collection [ https://www.rbdigital.com/thelibrarynetworkmi/service/magazines/landing | https://www.rbdigital.com/thelibrarynetworkmi/service/magazines/landing ] so as to display in order of popularity, by greatest number of circs during the past six months. Previously, the process to reorganize the display of the tiles, even when there were "only" 300 of them, was a slow and laborious one. So it only happened once per year. Now it is easy to change the order so as to display according to popularity, which is a very good thing when you have 3,600+ titles. For libraries that now have their own unique URL with RBdigital that "mirrors" the TLN magazine collection, this change of display order is any easy thing you can do yourself. Simply log in to the admin console of RBdigital, select Service Subscriptions at the top, select Magazines on the left, then click Collection Manager. At the top is a small blank box named "Order by Circs." Check that box, wait a bit, and the process of reorganizing your titles by number of circs, highest to lowest during the past six months, will begin. When finished you will see the new order on your admin console. It takes an overnight run for the new order to become visible on the public side. Earlier this morning I ran a usage report for the TLN collection. I was curious to see if patrons had discovered and were starting to use, the new titles. The answer is yes, they have and they are. Of our 3,600 or so total titles, nearly one-third of them, close to 1,200 titles, have already had at least one checkout so far in May. And while none of the new titles have moved into the top 10 in terms of popularity, there are a number of them that have cracked the top 100. Total checkouts on the consortial side for the month of May as of the time I ran the report were a bit more than 16,000. I hope your patrons enjoy their expanded, 3,600+ titles RBdigital Magazines collection. And remember, it isn't too late for your library to sign up! Please let me know if you would like a price quote for any of the five discounted price, RBdigital services for your library. Thanks.
