Announcing the CARES Act grant awards from the Library of Michigan
by Reish, Karren (MDE) 04 Aug '20

04 Aug '20

Good afternoon, the Library of Michigan (LM) is pleased to announce the 2020 CARES Act grants. 294 grants have been awarded, totaling $750,925. These funds will help public libraries provide safe and digitally inclusive services. The LM CARES Act grant program is designed to assist public libraries in providing improved access to the Internet for their community, while maintaining a safe environment for staff and patrons. The grants are funding one-year projects that increase libraries' supply of personal protective equipment and facilities supplies as well as increase community Internet connectivity through the purchase of Internet capable devices, hotspots or other appropriate materials and supplies for public use. The participating 294 libraries are from all areas of the state, including seventy-seven of Michigan's counties, and are working to find creative and accessible ways to continue to provide quality services. The grant funding will help as library staff are diligently working to set up safe services to help library users with various needs. A particular focus is the needed access to the Internet for children doing schoolwork from home, workers assigned to work from home, and community members who need to apply for benefits or services online, among other needs. If you would like more information about the Library of Michigan CARES Act grant program, please go to www.michigan.gov/lsta<http://www.michigan.gov/lsta> for the program description and grant materials. The Library of Michigan CARES Act grant program is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. FW: REALM Project update: Test 4 Underway
by Riley, Randy (MDE) 04 Aug '20

04 Aug '20

REALM Project update: Test 4 Underway Five items were selected for the fourth round of Battelle lab testing to examine the length of time the COVID-19 virus may live on materials commonly used in archives, libraries, and museums. The study began on Friday, July 31, on items provided by Columbus Metropolitan Library and the National Archives and Records Administration. In response to feedback from the library community and discussion among REALM working groups, four of the five items selected for test 4 are similar book materials as were studied in test 1; for this test they will be stacked to simulate their common storage configuration in bins, book drops, and on shelves. For more on the scope, timeline, and committees involved with #REALMproject, visit oc.lc/realm-project. Sign up to receive timely project email updates here. r. [American Library Association]<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fconnect.a…> Hi everyone, As we all know, the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent shelter-in-place orders around the country triggered a significant rise in the use of digital media by children and families. Now, more than ever, the work of children's library professionals serving as youth media mentors is essential. In response to this rise in digital media use and other challenges posed in recent months, ALSC has compiled a suite of tools and resources to support library professionals in all types of libraries. ALSC's Look to Libraries in Times of Crisis webpage<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F…> provides a host of free resources including tip sheets, articles, booklists, and other resources, including: * Media Mentorship Tip Sheet, a parents' guide to the many ways in which a children's library professional supports families in navigating the digital landscape, such as finding outstanding resources, modeling safe and effective digital device use, sharing methods for locating trustworthy information, and sharing resources on developing media literacy. * Comforting Reads and Tough Topics booklists featuring titles selected for children who are going through challenging situations like the death of a loved one, natural disasters, etc., that help spark conversations with children. * COVID-19 Resource Tip Sheet, a curated list of resources for youth and parents/caregivers, from expert sources, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that touch on subjects from managing stress and how to talk with children about COVID-19 to virtual games and activities to help children thrive at home. * and much more!
