Free/low-cost internet for American households

Thanks to the State Library of Oregon for sharing this!: https://www.digitalinclusion.org/free-low-cost-internet-plans/ The COVID-19 health crisis has shed light on the need for home internet service, and the large number of American households in all kinds of communities who don't have it. Some Internet Service Providers have responded with new or improved discount broadband plans, that will only be available for a short time; others continue to offer plans that were created prior to the crisis. NDIA commits to keeping this list of Free & Low-Cost Internet Plans updated daily. Which offers are included in this list? To support local efforts, NDIA has compiled a list of current offers from ISPs that will help low-income households to acquire service at low or no cost. Most have eligibility limitations linked to income or program enrollment. The list also includes established, nationally available low-cost plans offered by nonprofit organizations. We will add other providers' plans as we learn of them. Content on this page was updated March 18, 2020. All offers are less than $20/month total cost (with no installation fees). Who is the list for? This detailed list was designed to be helpful for digital inclusion practitioners, community leaders, service providers, libraries, media, and others who may give guidance to clients and constituents. It is not designed for distribution to the general public. Beginning Workshop FAQ

Greetings! We have been receiving many inquiries regarding the cancellation of Beginning Workshop. Below you will find answer to the most common questions. REGISTRATIONS I am an attendee. Do I need to cancel my workshop attendee registration? * No. All attendee registrations have been automatically cancelled by LM. There is nothing you need to do regarding your individual attendee conference registration. I am a speaker. Do I need to do anything additional? * No. All speaker registrations will be automatically cancelled by LM. There is nothing you need to do regarding your individual speaker conference registration. LODGING I am an attendee. Do I need to cancel my hotel room at Shanty Creek Resorts (SCR)? * MAYBE. * Anyone that mailed in a check may call to cancel, and a refund will be sent to them via mail. Be patient please, it has to go through accounting and will take a while. * Reservations staff, and all staff at SCR are on lower hours of operation. Please leave a message and you will be contacted. * Any attendees that are planning to attend the workshop in 2021 do not need to do anything. Your reservation will remain valid for the 2021 event. You are welcome to cancel if you prefer. * Any rooms that were booked beyond the Group Room Block, for personal use, will need to be rebooked through Reservation if the attendees still plan to visit Shanty Creek in May of 2020. * You can reach Shanty Creek Resort at (866) 486-7790. Will waivers related to a library staff member being unable to obtain certification in 2020 because of the event cancellation be processed automatically? * A library will need to submit the waiver to LM. If this is the reason a waiver is needed a waiver will be granted for the year. MeL Minute: This week brought to you by a homeschooler

[A close up of a sign Description automatically generated]In this week's MeL Minute, a Michigan home schooler talks about the information, accessibility, and enjoyment of eBooks available through MeL's eBook Collections.<https://mel.org/az.php?a=e> LM received this MM through Kate Van Auken, director of the White Pine Library Cooperative. It could not be more perfect for right now. RESEARCH: As a high school senior, many of my eBook needs are research based. There are so many great resources available through MeL but my go-to is using the eBook collections found online, particularly the eBook Academic Collection. This collection is made up of over 172,000 titles covering every subject imaginable. This collection is not age specific so titles can include children through adult. I find this very helpful when researching a topic I am interested in teaching, I can locate age appropriate titles within a subject, all in one place. They even have a citation icon on many of their sources to help with bibliographies! ACCESSIBILITY: For me personally, accessibility comes down to physically getting to the public library, something that can be hard to do in rural areas without a driver's license. MeL's eBook collections make it possible to access titles without ever leaving your home. Titles are available instantly as PDF files and as downloads you can use on your laptop computer or mobile devices. The wonderful part about MeL's ebook collections is that they take equal access for all very seriously. Users who are visually impaired, non-English speakers, users who are hearing impaired, physically or learning impaired can access titles in formats they can use. ENJOYMENT: MeL's eBook collections are not only for research and fact finding. The eBook High School Collection<http://web.a.ebscohost.com/ehost/search/basic?sid=514071d1-7893-4111-809c-d…> includes over 9,800 titles including both fiction and nonfiction. These titles are always available for instant gratification, no waiting for titles to be returned! Many titles also offer links to more books and videos about the topic you want to read about.
