Libraries today are serving their patrons in new and exciting ways through community engagement. Community engagement is the process of working collaboratively with community members – be they library patrons, residents, faculty, students or partner organizations – to address issues for the betterment of the community. As champions of lifelong learning, libraries are a place to quench curiosity, access technology, and explore new ideas, hobbies and careers. Increasingly, libraries also offer patrons welcoming virtual and physical spaces to meet their neighbors to discuss and resolve important issues. As part of this initiative, ALA will provide implementation grants to libraries serving small and/or rural communities to develop and lead a community engagement project that builds on the Libraries Transforming Communities: Facilitation Skills for Small and Rural Libraries e-course and facilitation guide<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ala.or…>. The goal of these grants are two-fold: a. this project is for library workers to use the skills learned through the LTC: Facilitation Skills for Small and Rural Libraries asynchronous 6-part e-course and facilitation guide to develop a community engagement program, and b. to provide flexible funding to support library community engagement. Libraries Transforming Communities: Focus on Small and Rural Libraries is part of ALA’s longtime commitment to preparing library workers for the expanding role of libraries. The initiative is offered in partnership with the Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL). It is supported by a private donor and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Eligibility * Applicants must have an institutional OR personal membership with either the American Library Association<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ala.or…> OR the Association for Rural & Small Libraries<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.arsl.…>. * This opportunity is open to all types of libraries serving small and/or rural communities in the U.S. and U.S. territories. * The Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) defines libraries serving small communities as those with a legal service area population of 25,000 or less and a rural community as one that is more than, or equal to, five miles from an urbanized area. * Only complete and eligible applications that are received on time will be reviewed.

RELEASE: As COVID-19 cases rise, State emphasizes worker protections in offices, remote work policies
by Shannon White - Library of Michigan 12 Nov '20

12 Nov '20

MIOSHA focuses efforts on protecting workers in traditional office settings [LEO Banner] --- PRESS RELEASE --- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020 CONTACT: Camara Lewis<mailto:lewisc16@michigan.gov> <mailto:olsend1@michigan.gov>517-930-4928 As COVID-19 cases rise, State emphasizes worker protections in offices, remote work policies MIOSHA focuses efforts on protecting workers in traditional office settings LANSING, Mich. - To further protect workers from the increased spread of COVID-19, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) launched a State Emphasis Program (SEP) focused on office settings that addresses the need for increased vigilance, education and enforcement on remote work policies. Workplaces continue to be a significant source of spread and outbreaks as Michigan battles COVID-19 throughout the state. On November 5, the Michigan Dept. of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reported 18 new outbreaks from the previous week tied to office settings and is continuing to track 21 outbreaks tied to offices previously reported. It is imperative that employers implement the mitigation strategies and promote remote work to alleviate potential outbreaks. "Workplace outbreaks are increasing along with the state's community numbers," said Director of COVID-19 Workplace Safety Sean Egan. "While employers are working hard to mitigate the spread, congregation of individuals whether at the workplace or a social gathering can contribute to the spread of COVID-19 in our communities." In MIOSHA's COVID-19 Emergency Rules,<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> employers are required to create a policy prohibiting in-person work for employees to the extent that their work activities can feasibly be completed remotely. Under statute, MIOSHA can cite employers, require abatement, and fine them up to $7,000 for failing to produce a remote work policy or if the employer's preparedness and response plan is non-compliant. The focus of this SEP is to educate and seek compliance with guidelines and rules that will protect workers in office locations where community spread of COVID-19 is a risk. Under the Emergency Rules, employers must prohibit in-person work to the extent feasible to minimize the presence of individuals congregating in work settings where COVID-19 may spread. MDHHS also issued guidance<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> last week including recommendations for remote work in office settings. "Employers must prohibit in-person work when an employee's duties can feasibly be completed away from the office. Remote work for office employees is a crucial mitigation strategy to contain the spread of COVID-19," said MIOSHA Director Bart Pickelman. "Some workplaces, including offices, seem to be lax on requiring certain protocols. As our numbers rise, all workplaces in Michigan must promote and continue remote work to the absolute maximum. Congregating in any setting leads to potential spread and remote work helps mitigate some degree of congregation." MIOSHA will conduct inspections at workplaces with traditional office settings to review how rules are being followed and enhance compliance. While inspections will seek to help employers comply with safety standards, if the inspections determine deficiencies in the employer's COVID-19 preparedness and response plans, citations and penalties up to $7,000 may be issued. Under the Emergency Rules, businesses that resume in-person work must, among other things, have a written COVID-19 preparedness and response plan and provide thorough training to their employees that covers, at a minimum, workplace infection-control practices, the proper use of personal protection equipment (PPE), steps workers must take to notify the business or operation of any symptoms of COVID-19 or a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19, and how to report unsafe working conditions. A set of online resources at Michigan.gov/COVIDWorkplaceSafety<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> provides businesses with the guidelines they and their employees must follow and includes a sample COVID-19 preparedness and response plan<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> and a reopening checklist<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> to help businesses put safeguards in place. Businesses can also find posters for employees and customers, factsheets and educational videos. To enhance MIOSHA's consultative services, the MIOSHA Ambassador Program's safety and health experts are visiting businesses statewide to offer education and support, with a focus on workplaces with a higher risk of community transmission. Employers and employees with questions regarding workplace safety and health may contact MIOSHA using the new hotline at 855-SAFE-C19 (855-723-3219). To report health and safety concerns in the workplace, go to Michigan.gov/MIOSHAcomplaint<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. ### [LEO Mission and Vision. Public Libraries support residents with information about ACA - resources and tools for your library from PLA
by Shannon White - Library of Michigan 12 Nov '20

Public libraries critical to health coverage during public health crisis http://www.ala.org/news/member-news/2020/11/public-libraries-critical-healt… Libraries Connecting You to Coverage: Affordable Care Act http://www.ala.org/pla/initiatives/connectingyoutocoverage "The eighth open enrollment period of the Affordable Care Act (ACA)<https://www.healthcare.gov/> began on Sunday, November 1, 2020 and will run through December 15, 2020 during what may be the most challenging year in its ten-year history. Millions of Americans have lost jobs due to the Coronavirus pandemic, leaving many without employer-sponsored health coverage. In its third consecutive year, the Public Library Association (PLA) initiative, Libraries Connecting You to Coverage<http://www.ala.org/pla/initiatives/connectingyoutocoverage>, offers a suite of free tools and resources to help library practitioners assist patrons in enrolling in health insurance coverage. Public libraries, as critical community anchors, are well positioned to share information about insurance options, including the Affordable Care Act, and to support patron's efforts to enroll successfully. At the federal level, funding for outreach and advertising has been reduced each year since 2016, shifting the burden of education and assistance to state and local levels. In 2020, public libraries may expect to see an increase in patrons seeking health insurance assistance due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The public library's role in connecting people to computers and the internet is also critical, given that increasingly, outreach and enrollment is taking place virtually due to closures and social distancing. All public libraries, especially those in states that utilize the Healthcare.gov<https://www.healthcare.gov/> Marketplace, are encouraged to take advantage of free resources to reach uninsured community members, improve health outcomes, and reduce medical costs in their communities. Library staff should determine the type of health insurance marketplace<https://www.kff.org/health-reform/state-indicator/state-health-insurance-ma…> used in their state (state-based or federally-facilitated via Healthcare.gov<https://www.healthcare.gov/>). For states using the Healthcare.gov Marketplace: * Open enrollment begins November 1 and ends December 15. Patrons who are uninsured or who need to renew their plans can do so at HealthCare.Gov<https://www.healthcare.gov/> starting November 1. * Coverage is more affordable than people think. In addition to steady premiums, most enrollees will qualify for tax credits to lower their monthly costs. Last year, about 8 in 10 enrollees qualified for financial help, and 2 in 3 shoppers could find a plan for $10 a month or less. * All ACA plans must cover key benefits like mental health care, maternity care, and prescription drugs. * The ACA protects people from discrimination based on pre-existing conditions. The ACA's provisions that protect from pre-existing condition discrimination are still in effect. PLA helps libraries create healthy communities and is pleased to have the support of Community Catalyst<https://www.communitycatalyst.org/> and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation<https://www.rwjf.org/> to promote insurance enrollment. Through PLA's Libraries Connecting You to Coverage<http://www.ala.org/pla/initiatives/connectingyoutocoverage> web site, libraries can access free resources. These include ready-made communication assets for social media, radio and other outlets; materials that can be printed and hung or distributed focusing on getting started with enrollment, special enrollment periods, and more; and instructions on adding the MyHealthfinder content<https://health.gov/our-work/health-literacy/consumer-health-content/free-we…> to your library's website. PLA also encourages libraries to promote health information courses on Digitallearn.org<https://www.digitallearn.org/>, including Using Healthcare.gov to Enroll in Health Insurance<https://www.digitallearn.org/courses/using-healthcare-gov-to-enroll-in-heal…> and Using MyHealthfinder for Preventive Care<https://www.digitallearn.org/courses/using-myhealthfinder-for-preventive-ca…>, and offers recorded webinars for library staff on open enrollment, health literacy, reaching the uninsured and more. Questions about the initiative and resources may be directed to Leighann Wood, PLA Program Manager at lwood(a)ala.org<mailto:lwood@ala.org>." Shannon White Library of Michigan, 702 W. Virtual Author Visit: Mary Crockett Hill
by Nicole Brobston 11 Nov '20

11 Nov '20

Hi all! White Lake Township Library is hosting a virtual author visit with Mary Crockett Hill for our teens and young at heart YA lovers on Friday December 11 at 6:30pmSpecial Guest, Mary Crockett Hill has worked as everything from a history museum director to a toilet seat hand model, and now she’s here to discuss her current job as a YA Author (which she does when she’s not busy being a college professor). Come ask questions, deliberate over her book How She Died, How I Lived , and revel in this zoom experience.. Mary is the author of *How She Died, How I lived *and is an old college professor of mine. We are so excited to be able to host her, but wanted to open up the event to those outside of our own township! Please share with your students and patrons! *A summary of How She Died, How I lived: **I was one of five. The five girls Kyle texted that day. The girls it could have been. Only Jamie--beautiful, saintly Jamie--was kind enough to respond. And it got her killed.* On the eve of Kyle's sentencing a year after Jamie's death, all the other "chosen ones" are coping in various ways. But our tenacious narrator is full of anger, stuck somewhere between the horrifying past and the unknown future as she tries to piece together why she gets to live, while Jamie is dead. Now she finds herself drawn to Charlie, Jamie's boyfriend--knowing all the while that their relationship will always be haunted by what-ifs and why-nots. Is hope possible in the face of such violence? Is forgiveness? How do you go on living when you know it could have been you instead? *A description of our event*: Special Guest, Mary Crockett Hill has worked as everything from a history museum director to a toilet seat hand model, and now she’s here to discuss her current job as a YA Author (which she does when she’s not busy being a college professor). Re: [Michlib-l] Kanopy.com

Popularity definitely increased this year compared to last year as a result of the stay at home order. Active users Jan - November 2019 were about 50, whereas Jan - Nov 2020 are almost 100 and monthly use (play credits) likewise doubled. Our invoices each month currently average about $200, with most play credits costing $2 each although there are some $5 per play items. It works much like Hoopla where you are charged per play, with some items marked as "credit free playing" since the pandemic began. Kanopy is I think our only e-database where you have to create an account and login first in order to browse their offerings, which is highly annoying when trying to determine if they have something or when you're demonstrating the service to a patron. They have some big name titles like Lady Bird, Room, Man Called Ove, Moonlight, and Clue, but primarily a lot of documentaries, independent and foreign films, older cinema, and some tv shows through A&E and Great Courses. There's also a Kanopy Kids for kids specific browsing. My impression is that you don't go into it specifically looking for something, but it is more geared towards browsing. We definitely have our "super users" (one person has watched 50+ items since Jan. 1st) but about half of our users have viewed only two items since the beginning of the year. > ---------- Forwarded message --------- > From: EMAIL TEAM via Michlib-l <michlib-l(a)mcls.org> > Date: Wed, Nov 11, 2020, 11:58 AM > Subject: [Michlib-l] Kanopy.com > To: Michlib-l ListServ <michlib-l(a)mcls.org> > > > Dear Public Library Directors, > > If you subscribe to kanopy.com, what has been your response?
