This work was informed by the work and expert guidance of ULC's Digital Equity action team<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.urban…>, this document spotlights how the pandemic has both intensified the digital divide and created a window for action by raising the visibility of what it means to be unconnected in our hyper-connected world, especially for our most vulnerable residents. Included in the Leadership Brief are action strategies, key messages and background information to empower library leaders to take on a more active and intentional role in advancing digital equity. Professional Development Escape Rooms from the Ground Up: In-person, outreach, and digital versions<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flibraryof…> Tuesday, October 6 2:00 PM ET - Library of Michigan Join us as two escape-room-loving librarians walk you through what you need to have for escape rooms at your library. We'll cover how to build in-person rooms for families and groups, how to take an escape room to schools, and how to build a digital escape room for community engagement. In the process, we'll consider budgets and staffing needs for libraries of all shapes and sizes. The webinar link will be emailed to registered attendees the day before the event. Foundations of digital literacy virtual workshop for Michigan library staff

Foundations of Digital Literacy is a new virtual training offered by MCLS in partnership with the Library of Michigan. This workshop is designed to help library staff gain confidence in everyday interactions with technology and is intended for participants who would like a basic introduction to digital literacy topics. Registration is open and filling fast! This workshop is being offered multiple times in October to accommodate smaller participation limits in each session, which will allow for plenty of personal attention and lots of interactive small group activities. Sandra most recently served as the Manager of Collection Development for Youth at Ingram Library Services in LaVergne, TN. She also has worked at BookOps-Brooklyn & New York Public Library, and the New York Public Library, Mid-Manhattan Branch where she served as a Supervising Librarian and a Senior Librarian respectively. Join tomorrow for a continuation of the "What is a Library if the Building is Closed?" series from Gigabit Libraries. This round focuses on Libraries in Recovery. On Friday, September 18, at 11am Eastern you can hear from an all-star panel with internet "co-father", Vint Cerf; IMLS Director, Crosby Kemper; and University of South Carolina's David Lankes to help us begin longer term thinking and planning for libraries in months and even years ahead. Recent Scientific American article<https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/bad-news-about-the-pandemic-were…> predicts that, "it might be not until 2023-2024 when we get a sufficiently safe and effective vaccine." More predictable is the need to prepare for waves of restrictions and loosenings for the long haul. How to plan for that kind of operating environment? Well, the libraries are open. It's just the buildings that are mostly closed. But what does that mean going forward and for how long? Tomorrow's powerhouse panel with Vint, Crosby & David will help us anticipate what might be ahead for libraries as we kick off Round Three in the series as: Libraries in Recovery. What form will library services, if not library spaces, take in the years ahead? While also taking into account an array of potential if not probable disruptions like increasingly severe and more frequent extreme weather events due to climate change. What new skills will be expected of librarians themselves? Greater ICT expertise seems one safe bet. Our current era of digital transformation was already rapidly accelerating before the virus struck. Now the pandemic has put that phenomenon into overdrive. What will that mean for whatever the "next normal" may look like? The shift from libraries as a 3rd place to becoming more aset of virtual services has taken hold. Designing new dedicated special function library spaces has been driving library design for over a decade. Now what? What impact on a now intolerable digital divide? "Public libraries will always adapt to and reflect the communities they serve," -Marian Morgan-Bindon, city librarian for Gold Coast, Australia.
