Mystery titles
by Oscoda County Library 02 Dec '20

02 Dec '20

Good evening: I am hoping the collective wisdom can help with some book suggestions. I have a patron who is looking for mystery titles/series for a 17 year old boy. She gathered his name from DHHS, and knows nothing about him. She is not sure if his family has any Internet access, so she does not want to purchase an Amazon gift card. Thank you in advance for all of your assistance. 'Amy -- Amy Knepp, Director Oscoda County Library 430 W. Eighth Street Mio, MI 48647 TEL: 989-826-3613 TAX: 989-826-5461 http://www.oscoda.lib.mi.us

It seems difficult to remember pre-pandemic times. We began the year with optimism, and many plans. But in the words of the Greek philosopher Epictetus, "Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle. Some things are within your control. And some things are not." Our Board of Directors and staff team worked hard this year to reflect, adapt, create, and deliver. We were able to add an additional grant opportunity when critically needed thanks to CARES Act funding; we improvised and developed MI Humanities At Home, and Bridging Michigan programs and grants. Your support, feedback, and participation led to perhaps one of our most successful years ever. We eagerly look forward to 2021, when we host the National Humanities Conference in Detroit, and continue to bring the humanities to life in the “every day” of Michiganders. A recent donor said, “Michigan Humanities is a university without walls.” We appreciate that sentiment, and will strive to continue providing quality humanities grants and programs. The ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom is seeking information on any ban or request to remove library or school materials, displays, and programs that happened in 2020. OIF urges library workers and educators to report all censorship incidents, even if they don’t need assistance or support to address the challenge. Those with information about bans and challenges that happened anytime this year are encouraged to submit OIF’s online reporting form by December 31, 2020. Hi! Do you subscribe to a cool database to get your youth coloring pages or worksheets? Some of the databases I have looked into include Scholastic Teachables, Highlights Bingo and Education.com. I'm curious if your library uses your database of choice a lot, or do you find copyright free material in place of a database? Thanks in advance for your help! Policy questions
by Nannette Miller 01 Dec '20

01 Dec '20

Good afternoon. My board president wants two policies created. One is, "what to do if the director isn't available policy", and the other is "calling the lawyer policy". My thought was the first one would be included in our Emergency/Disaster Policy, and simply refer someone to the Director's manual. That isn't what she wants apparently. Does anyone have any policies covering those issues, if so what do you call them, and are they separate or part of another policy? Thank you so much. I always get such great information from you all! Upcoming Event at BPL - The King of Confidence, with Author Miles Harvey
by Mick Howey 01 Dec '20

01 Dec '20

Dear Michlib-l, Please join us at 7:00 pm on December 9, 2020 as we host author Miles Harvey for a lively discussion of the book Nathaniel Philbrick called “a masterpiece” and Dave Eggers “ludicrously enjoyable,” The King of Confidence. Please find the event description below: Jesse James Strang is a little known but captivating figure in Michigan history who, until his assassination in 1856, rules over a breakaway Mormon colony on Lake Michigan’s Beaver Island, where he was crowned “King of Earth and Heaven.” King Strang, as the press delighted in calling him, tried his hand at various roguish trades - lawyer, newspaperman, prophet, pirate, state legislator - but this true gift was for the pure flimflam of American celebrity. Author Miles Harvey will give an engaging talk based on his book about Strang, “The King of Confidence: A Tale of Utopian Dreamers, Frontier Schemers, True Believers, False, Prophets, and the Murder of an American Monarch.” Harvey is a national and international best selling author whose other books include The Island of Lost Maps and Painter in a Savage Land. To attend, please register at https://bit.ly/3lqxF3K. Thanks and hope to that you can make it! Rural Library Summit: Accelerating 3rd Grade Reading Outcomes in Rural Places<https://www.berea.edu/pfe/librarysummit/> December 10, 2020 1-5 PM ET The Rural Library Summit is a half-day celebration of the impact libraries have on the aspirations of young people and a recognition of their contribution to third grade reading outcomes, especially for students in rural communities. Research has shown that children who read on or above grade level in third grade triple their chances of attending college. The Summit will explore how libraries can grow their impact on third grade reading leveraging community support and resources. Participants will learn about and connect with a range of opportunities with regional and national organizations, including the newly launched Rural Library Fellowship. The program will support the efforts of 22 Fellows to engage in initiatives to increase third grade reading in their communities. I recently read an article on a tool created by MIT where you can tweak all kids of parameters to determine how long a space is safe if a single infected person is inside.
