Virtual teen mystery (MI Library Quest) - sign up your library to participate
by Mi.Library Quest 08 Dec '20

08 Dec '20

Hello! Your library is invited to participate in the second statewide MI Library Quest: Winter Quest! The Winter Quest will be held from January 1 through February 14. Teens will collect clues from the websites of participating libraries, solve the mystery, and enter to win a prize. If your library would like to participate, please sign up here <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeXxN3ST6OcRFYd53bsdJUIiGiB8rftL1P…> by December 11. Following library closures in the spring and a shift to virtual programming, a group of librarians from throughout the state began meeting to collaborate on virtual teen programming. We created MI Library Quest, a virtual scavenger hunt, for all teens throughout the state as a summer event. We're now getting ready to launch another Quest to be held this winter (January 1 - February 14). The Winter Quest will be a mystery for teens to solve by collecting evidence from participating libraries' websites. The premise is: An anonymous tip has come in that a thief has announced that they will steal an iconic Michigan landmark on Valentine's Day. We’re recruiting teenage private detectives charged with stopping the heist! Figure out what they’re stealing and who the thief is to prevent the crime and be entered to win a prize. The challenge begins on January 1. Details will be on www.mi.gov/MiLibraryQuest early next month. That site currently has our Summer Quest info. Each participating library will: - place the MI Library Quest image and a library-specific clue (which will be given to them) on their website - promote the event to their teens (Promotional materials will be available from the Quest team.) - award at least one prize to a teen who is from your library and completes the Quest You are also invited to join our meetings. The next one is on Wednesday, December 2 at 2:00 P.M. If you'd like to join, please email us at mi libraryquest(a)gmail.com for the Zoom link and password. If your library would like to participate, please sign up here <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeXxN3ST6OcRFYd53bsdJUIiGiB8rftL1P…> by December 11. If you have any questions, please let us know at milibraryquest(a)gmail.com. -The Quest Team

UVC Responses, Part 2
by Sharon Crotser-Toy 07 Dec '20

07 Dec '20

Oops! I missed this one: Good Afternoon! We began using UVC lights two weeks ago, and I asked our Librarian Assistant who has spearheaded the project to share his thoughts. My thoughts: We at Allen Park have looked into UVC lights to sanitize our materials coming back into the library. We had relied on 4-7 day quarantines per the REALM studies, but the news that UVC is able to sterilize viruses made us consider using the UVC lights instead of the full quarantine. With object to person transmission being a very small vector of transmission for COVID-19, we are comfortable with using the lights as a precaution. Columbia University Irving Medical Center released a report in June that far-UVC light is effective at sterilizing coronaviruses, including COVID-19, so we use UVC lamps with a 254 wavelength mercury bulb. I have not seen any contradicting reports that COVID-19 is unaffected by far-UVC. These lights are harmful to humans, however, so our quarantine room has a sign on the door showing that the lights are in use and to not enter the room until the full 30 minute lamp cycle is completed. UVC is still a light, it cannot sterilize surfaces it cannot touch. We currently do 2 30-minute cycles hitting most of the exterior surfaces of the books. We do not run a cycle on each individual page. The areas of the book people are most likely to touch are the covers and edges of the pages so again, we are comfortable with this method to control exposure for our patrons. Being able to reduce our quarantine time down to 'next-day' use of materials has increased usage of the library, and unless a new study is released showing object to human transmission is rising, or that far-UVC light is not as effective as reported initially, we will continue with this as our primary sanitation method for objects. We do not allow public access to the building at this time, we do not have the capacity to sterilize the building with our small lamps, so I cannot speak to the cost-effectiveness of using the lights for more than just object sterilizing. -- Sharon Crotser-Toy Director *Watervliet District Library* 333 N. UVC System Responses
by Sharon Crotser-Toy 07 Dec '20

07 Dec '20

Greetings, everyone! These are the responses I’ve received, regarding UVC systems. It’s not likely we will pursue them due to the costs, but I’m keeping an open mind. Thanks, as always, for sharing your collective wisdom! _____ We just got our order for UV filters that are going into our HVAC system, I can forward you what we got. I will say it costs a lot, but I was able to get a grant to help offset the costs. _____ >From the research done here, UVC is an option. If you UVC the drop box, then it gets the outside of materials and books need insides done. Demco has a model for books that does 3 books open, books are put in for a set amount of time, then you put in another 3 books. Sounds really cumbersome, and the cost is $5000.00. And UVC is a known carcenogin. I decided that quarantining material is a better option. _____ We are very early in the process of a renovation and as I was meeting with our architect he suggested installing plasma air purifiers in our two heating/cooling units. I had them installed last week as part of our annual heating inspection. They cost $848 each (installed) which included a $50 discount for each because we had them installed at the same time as the inspection. They are small, use the existing 24 volt power in the furnace, and mount on the ductwork. The only drawback is the ventilation fans have to be on all the time to maximize their effectiveness. I hadn’t thought about this but it makes sense so we turn the fans on in the morning when we turn up the thermostats and put them back on normal mode in the evening so they are not running 24/7. Here is the link to the brand they installed: https://www.rgf.com/products/air/reme-halo/ _____ Eau Claire installed UV lights in our duct work many years ago. I hadn't thought of it in years. When all of this COVID stuff happened, I called our furnace people. They said that checking the lights is on their checklist and that they have been maintaining them. I have no idea of how it works, but we had a board member at the time who insisted that we needed to do that. I think it was about 12-14 years ago. _____ I saw this in the paper today. Beyond that I do not have any insight. If you hear from anyone I would love to see your responses. https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/2020/11/30/rochester-hills-compa… _____ The Hamburg Township Library back in May install two units into our the main library units. We used Lakeside Service out of Brighton Michigan. See attachments of the units we used. The price was $1,075 per unit back in May. FW: NEWS RELEASE: MDHHS extends epidemic order 12 days to ensure COVID-19 surge is stabilizing
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 07 Dec '20

07 Dec '20

Hello: MDHHS has extended restriction until December 20. The newest order goes into effect on Wednesday December 9. Please see the press release on the new order below. Please note the new guidance on protocols for residential gatherings and information on creating a social pod. Thanks! Clare Clare D. Membiela, MLS, J.D. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has extended by 12 days the epidemic order<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> that restricts indoor social gatherings and other group activities. The additional 12 days will allow the department to determine the full impact of the Thanksgiving holiday on the spread of COVID-19 across Michigan. Under today's order, MDHHS continues to urge families to avoid indoor gatherings, and only two households may gather inside, with strict protocols recommended<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. Individuals should wear masks consistently whenever they are inside with individuals not in their household, and are recommended to pick only a small group to see regularly<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. Bars and restaurants must remain closed for dine-in service, but can remain open for outdoor dining, carry-out and delivery. Gyms are open for individual exercise with mandatory masking and additional strict safety measures. Casinos, movie theaters and group exercise classes remain closed. Professional and college sports meeting extraordinary standards for risk mitigation may continue without spectators. Colleges, universities and high schools will continue with remote learning, with no in-person classes. "Hope is on the horizon, but we need an additional 12 days to determine the full impact of the Thanksgiving holiday on our efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. "This is all about protecting our families and frontline workers until we eradicate this virus once and for all. With recent daily case counts averaging well above 6,000, the daily death toll at alarming levels and the risk of hospitals becoming overwhelmed, we must work together as Michiganders and listen to our health experts. This may be the most difficult time yet in our struggle with COVID-19, but there is light at the end of the tunnel." The order will keep existing measures in place through Dec. 20 and does not include a blanket stay-home action. Employees who work in jobs that cannot be performed from home can continue to go to work, including those in manufacturing, construction and health occupations. Outdoor gatherings, outdoor dining and parks remain open. Individualized activities with distancing and face masks are still allowed: retail shopping; public transit; restaurant takeout; personal-care services such as haircuts, by appointment; and individualized exercise at a gym, with extra spacing between machines. "We each have a personal responsibility to wear a mask consistently and minimize indoor gatherings, so we can protect our frontline heroes and loved ones," said MDHHS Director Robert Gordon. "If we don't, the disease will continue to spread and people will continue to get sick and die." [MDHHS Image] "While we have seen early signs of progress in our case rates and hospitalizations, unfortunately our rates are still alarmingly high and we need more time to understand the impact that Thanksgiving travel may have had on the spread of COVID-19 in Michigan," said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical executive and chief deputy for health at MDHHS. "I am hopeful because vaccines will be available soon, potentially later this month. However, it will take time for the vaccine to be widely available to the general public, and it is important that we continue to do what we can to contain this virus." MDHHS also identified three key metrics<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> that will be utilized in determining whether to slowly reopen at the end of the 12 days. Specifically, the department will be looking closely at the percentage of hospital beds with COVID patients, the number of COVID-19 cases and the positivity rate. With improvements in those numbers in context, MDHHS will carefully reopen, with in-person learning at high schools first. Next in line will be entertainment venues where people can maintain consistent masking, such as casinos, theaters and bowling, with concessions closed. "The last few weeks have been critical to slowing the spread, particularly across the Upper Peninsula given the geography between hospitals and the available resources," said Karen Cheeseman, President and CEO of Mackinac Straits Health System in St. Ignace. "We won't see continued improvement without your help. We are asking you to heed the advice of public health experts by washing your hands, wearing your mask, and avoiding crowds." Just before Thanksgiving, Gov. Whitmer sent a letter to the Michigan Legislature seeking their support and asking them to pass a COVID relief package to help families and businesses across the state, which included a permanent extension of unemployment benefits. She has also called for the Legislature to pass bills to require masks in public, which has received bipartisan support, and would serve to greatly improve compliance, assist law enforcement and help slow the spread of COVID-19. Just last week, the State Budget Office sent the Appropriations Chairs in the Legislature an additional request to provide supplemental funding in the current budget for additional COVID response needs for testing, contact tracing, PPE, hospital staffing, support for nursing homes and veterans homes and funding to quickly begin distributing vaccines to our highest risk residents as soon as the vaccine becomes available. Information around this outbreak is changing rapidly. Larry Martin "WWII In Their Own Words" digital program
by Battles, Calvin 07 Dec '20

07 Dec '20

Hello Fellow Public Librarians, I know we are all looking for quality programming ideas that can be done virtually. The Jackson District Library is transitioning one of our most popular programs into a digital program that I would like to recommend to all of you. Over the past 12+ years, the Jackson District Library has hosted Larry Martin's "WWII In Their Own Words" ([ http://lmww2.com/ | Larry Martin's WWII In Their Own Words ] at our Carnegie Branch. Also during this time Larry has also done this program in libraries around the state of Michigan, and it always gets a great response. "WWII In Their Own Words" has drawn between 80 and 150 attendees per event. An estimated 5,000 people have come to hear the reflections and experiences of WWII veterans that Larry has interviewed. JDL hosted Larry once a month for a Zoom/Facebook Live program for the past 4 months, and our last presentation had the best participation for a Zoom program with over 30 people attending. Larry will show one of the hundreds of interviews that he has done and then answer questions from the audience. The interviews are always interesting and Larry has interviewed at least one person who experienced every part of WWII, from prisoners of war, to German citizens, to soldiers who survived Pearl Harbor. To hear these men and women discuss these experiences during WWII is truly fascinating. Larry is very excited by the fact that he could provide this program to libraries around the country digitally, so if you are interested in having this amazing program you should reach out to him. You are also welcome to contact me if you have any questions about the program. Thanks and stay safe.
